The Knicks have reached a 10-day contract agreement with two-way player Jacob Toppin, the team announced (via Twitter).
With three open spots on its 15-man standard roster, New York faced a deadline of today to make at least two additions. Toppin’s 10-day deal and the expected signing of DaQuan Jeffries to a 10-day contract will get the team back to the league minimum roster of 14 players.
Toppin landed a two-way contract with the Knicks after going undrafted out of Kentucky last summer. He has only appeared in five NBA games, but he scored 11 points in 17 minutes last Wednesday as New York was dealing with a depleted roster.
Toppin has spent much of the season in the G League, averaging 21.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 13 regular season games with the Westchester Knicks. He also took part in the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend.
Toppin’s promotion leaves New York with an open two-way slot that can be filled by March 4.
I don’t like this new trend of teams signing players’ brothers. It’s annoying.
Pretty funny that Milwaukee had RoLo and Thanasis for most of the season. Brings back memories of my Knicks signing JR Smith’s brother, who had no business even sniffing the NBA.
Didn’t keep Obi, so you sign his brother???
Rose was Obi’s agent (so he knows the brother) & they traded Obi so he could get paid more, not because it was a good move for the team. They could have used Obi now, rather than the two seconds they got for the only backup PF on the team.
I didn’t know that he was not signed. Need to give the guy a contract otherwise somebody is going to get him he can play and while Julius is out can give us help off the bench. Hopefully OG gets back but he can play three or four.
Toppin was signed, they just converted him off the two-way.
Apparently, Taj is not getting a rest of the year contract at this point. There was no need to use the 10 day on Toppin at this time other than to fill the required 14th spot. I’m surprised.
A strange move given that J. Toppin was already on the team on a two-way contract.
Teams usually convert two-way contracts into a rest-of-season standard deal or into a multi-year contract.
And now they convert the two-way contract into a… 10-day?
That means that the contract the guy had, probably covering the rest of the season, now has been shortened to just the next 10 days. He might get more money in the next 10 days then he would’ve gotten on the two-way, or something, I don’t know, but this is hardly a promotion to me.
We’ll see what happens, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns on a new two-way deal after this one expires.
Hate how the dunk contest is literal trash non nba players
