The Wizards came close to accepting a trade offer for forward Kyle Kuzma this week, team sources tell Josh Robbins of The Athletic. While those sources didn’t identify the team Washington was talking to, reporting from The Athletic suggests it was the Mavericks. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN also stated during The Woj Pod on Thursday (YouTube link) that Dallas was trying to get Kuzma from Washington earlier in the week.
The Wizards were seeking a “home-run” return for Kuzma rather than simply a fair offer, according to Robbins, so the Mavericks shifted their focus and ultimately came away with P.J. Washington from the Hornets in addition to Daniel Gafford in a separate deal with Washington.
The trade with Charlotte sent out Grant Williams, whom the Mavericks signed to a fully guaranteed four-year, $53MM contract in a sign-and-trade last summer, giving up unprotected swap rights to their 2030 first-round pick as part of that transaction.
While Thursday’s deals improved their roster, making that sort of investment in Williams, only to trade him several months later after his value had declined, represents a “massive whiff” for the Mavs, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN. MacMahon stated on the latest episode of the Hoop Collective podcast that there were “personality clashes” involving Williams in Dallas and that the Mavs seemed “determined” to move him.
“He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way,” MacMahon said.
Here’s more on the Mavs:
- Luka Doncic was “very enthusiastic” about the idea of the Mavs acquiring Washington, according to Wojnarowski, who suggests that was likely one factor motivating Dallas to get the deal across the finish line.
- The Mavericks have an open spot on their 15-man roster and general manager Nico Harrison indicated on Thursday they’ll continue exploring ways to upgrade the roster, including on the buyout market, tweets Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News. According to Townsend (Twitter link), the belief within the organization about Dallas’ odds of landing Spencer Dinwiddie, who sat near the Mavs’ bench during Thursday’s game in New York, ranges from “cautious optimism to confident.”
- Tim Cato of The Athletic explores how Washington and Gafford will fit in Dallas, pointing out that – since both players are still just 25 years old and are under contract for multiple seasons beyond this one – their value as trade assets should remain strong if the Mavs decide to move them down the road.
- Confirming previous reporting, Cato cites league sources who say the Hornets had initially been unwilling to trade Washington to the Mavericks without getting Josh Green back, but relented on that stance in the final hours leading up to the deadline.
- Sam Vecenie of The Athletic also assesses the Mavericks’ two deadline deals, expressing some reservations about the move for Washington but dubbing the Gafford acquisition a major win.
Especially if the mavs sign Dinwiddie but even know the mavs are a championship team if it works out with the new additions. Definitely not the favorites but they’re scary now and can make some noise
You think they’ll get out of the play in?
I think Dallas and the Lakers will be the 7 and 8 seeds at the end of the year. At least I’m rooting for it, I think it will be a crazy fun match-up to kick start the postseason.
For some reason I don’t think the additions of Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington and possibly Spencer Dinwiddie are enough to get the Mavs any closer to championship contention this season than they were two days ago.
They’re still trash other than Luka and kyrie (who is a nut job that also misses half the games) and their most recent trades have been trash too
Your team is trash too!!
So you needed two 1st for kuzma. So mavs could of traded their 2027 1st and could of found a 3rd team for THJ and could of got a 1st for him. That’s 3 1st holmes,g.williams for gafford and kuz. And could and should get Spencer
I’m sure Grant Williams started rubbing people the wrong way from the minute he went to his first Mavs press conference flexing his muscles after every answer.
What a d-bag…. I bet the Celtics’ players were ecstatic when he left. Give me Dillon Brooks 7 days of the week and twice on Sundays.
He’s the worst rebounding “big” in the NBA.
Take a joke man shesh

No team has emerged in the East that can take out Miami in a 7-game playoff series.
An embarrassing list. Putting Miami at 1 just proves you don’t have a club what you are talking about
Miami was a Play-In team last year, and went to the NBA Finals. Now that the Trade Deadline has passed …. Nobody in the East has stepped up with enough to be Miami in the Playoffs. They embarrassed Milwaukee and Boston last year. The moves made by both teams don’t counter what Jimmy, Bam and Miami bring in a playoff series with Spoelstra.
Yeah, Porzingis and Holiday, those moves mean nothing.
Orlando over NY?
Are you drunk?
Jaylin Brown still can’t dribble. Added Porzingis and Holiday. Lost Marcus Smart, Malcolm Brogdon and had Robert Williams healthy.
Randle has a significant injury , OG just had surgery, Mitchell Robinson is for the most part done for the year. Meanwhile, Hartenstein continues to have trouble with his Achilles. Have you seen Banchero (All-Star) and Franz Wagner this year???
Xavier Tillman says hello?
Jimmy Butler is laughing
While I see the reason why you think Miami is the best team in the East, given nobody in the East really made moves, you are really putting all your chips in like Pat Riley and hope that Butler at 34 years old has the same playoff run as last year’s. There was insurmountable luck in last year’s run to the finals. Yes, they beat Milwaukee in round 1, but Middleton wasn’t apart of that series. Giannis missed TWO games during that series. Now move onto Round 2 against Knicks, wasn’t Immanuel Quickley hurt in that series? Plus you had Obi Toppin (enough said)…now replace both of two guys with OG & Bojan who are capable players and can space the floor. Now we get to the East Finals, yes they beat Boston. But Boston addressed their issues with KP and Jrue Holliday. Miami also had Max Strus who torched the Celtics defense in that ECF. Gabe Vincent (remember him)? He played out of his mind. Now you subtract Gabe and Strus who were instrumental to last year’s East run and replaced him with Terry Rozier? He’s a good player but he’s not going to replace both of those guys.
Yes Miami made it last year with Butler’s impressive playoff run but they also encountered a few injury riddled teams and lost two KEY cogs last year and you think they got better, because they added Terry Rozier???
Good luck to you defending this come April & May.
Miami wasn’t just about Jimmy last year. They had it going. Offensively, the spacing and execution on the floor was superb. Boston couldn’t guard them at times, and not just Jimmy. Did the same thing to Miami. Miami is a well-coached. Well-oiled. Playoff machine. Remember the bubble run to the Finals??? Spoelstra is one of the last remaining true tacticians on the sidelines.
Miami is gonna get Indiana or Orlando in the first round as the #4 seed. They will then get Boston, and then the Milwaukee/Cleveland winner. Like Boston, Milwaukee has not solved their Miami problem. Miami ran through them like water in the playoffs. Bucks still don’t know what happened.
“Offensively, the spacing and execution on the floor was superb. ”
Well guess what? Majority of that is due to Max Strus’s shooting and Gabe Vincent’s ability to penetrate the defense, and they didn’t replace either with Terry Rozier. Good lord.
The Max Strus who shot 35% from 3 point land for Miami last year, and is currently shooting 33% from 3 point land for Cleveland while making $17 million per year as a 3 point shooting specialist????
The same Max Strus who shot lights out in the playoffs? Yes that’s the same Strus.
Love how you didn’t mention Gabe’s ball penetration in your reply, but hey let’s single out Max Strus because it’s easier of the two.
The level of spacing and execution that Miami put on display gave Strus wide open looks throughout the series. Everybody was knocking them down.
Same with Vincent penetrating the ball. Gets a lot easier when you got all kinds of space to get wherever you want on the floor. Boston was dazed and confused. Miami went into Game 7 on Boston’s floor with flights and hotels already booked for the next round, and then proceeded to run through Boston like water.
What about Gabe’s defense? He was a dog last spring. That’s why he was rewarded by the Los Angeles Lebrons?
Not just the Heat as 1 in the East but Dallas isn’t better than the Thunder and I’m not so sure the Suns are either. It’s a lot asking a lot for Beal and Durant to hold up the rest of the season, not to mention the playoffs.
@chucktoad Dallas had an outstanding trade deadline. They added guys that absolutely can play impactful playoff roles with Luka. Adding Dinwiddie would be the icing on the cake. He played some of his best basketball in Dallas with Luka. Dallas has a playoff stud in Luka, a second scorer in Kyrie, and a bunch of goon type dudes to do role player dirty work.
OKC is good, but not ready offensively. Still a one-man show with Shai. Jalen Williams is getting there, but next year is more likely his time. OKC is still a year away.
Gafford is a nice pickup but PJ Washington isn’t all that much better than Grant Williams and Dinwiddie is washed.
OKC has the number 5 rated offense, the number 4 rated defense and is number 2 in net rating league wide.
It’s not just a one man show either. You mentioned Jaylen Williams but Chet Holmgren has been huge all season as well. They also brought in Hayward. He should help reinforce the wing rotation. He also brings a veteran presence to one of the youngest teams in the league. He does have an extensive injury history but he won’t be asked to play 30+ minutes a night. That will make it more likely he’s available come playoff time.
A Power Ranking, among teams, is about their relative strength at the time. Not where someone thinks they’ll be several months from now.
Nevertheless, if Barry Book were opening up, and setting Odds in this order, I’d take the field (2-8) vs MIA. While I try to avoid wagering on my own team, at 7th best odds, I’ll throw something on the NYK as well.
Miami just had a 8 game losing streak didnt they…. Miami this season isn’t the same Miami that went to the finals years ago.
I’d have it
1. Boston
2. Cleveland
3. Knicks
4. Milwaukee
5. Philly
6. Indy
7. Orlando
8. Miami
Boston have the best record in the league, and a team loses with all stars they are clearly the best. Cleveland are 9-1 in there last 10, playing fantastic and only 16 losses this season even with multiple key players injured at times.
Knicks post OG trade were great and I like the deadline moves aswell, they just get better and better. If Robinson can return aswell they will be tough to beat.
Bucks have been bad since hiring Doc Rivers.
Sixers on a downwards spiral 3-7 in there last 10 but that’s with Embiid out. He will return and they could be boosted by the addition on Lowry.
Indy I have just below, poor team defence but amazing offence, liked abit clunky after the Pascal trade and now made another deal moving Heild off. Might take time to work things out for them.
Orlando on the rise but young and inexperienced, how will they go in the playoffs who knows.
Check Jimmy Butler stats over past couple of weeks. They have completely adjusted to Jimmy-Mode. Miami is now a different team. They are a veteran squad that is timing out there peak run for the playoffs.
Remember what the Clippers looked like when Harden arrived??? What do they look like now???
Miami has a chance to be scary. Bam in the middle with Jimmy, Tyler Herro, Rozier and Jacquez, or whoever else. Everybody is a shooter. Everybody is a passer. They traded for Rozier for a reason. They truly believes he fits their team chemistry and style of play. Quite possibly a better fit than Lillard, who is gonna be a defensive problem for Milwaukee in the Playoffs.
They had that chemistry going strong in the playoffs last year. They just ran out of bodies. Healthy, Denver was not gonna just walk to the title. Miami has a real shot at being a better playoff team this year, then they were last year.
Miami is currently stalking Boston, and is lined up perfectly for a 2nd round showdown. Boston #1 seed and Miami #4 seed.
What’s Harden arriving in LA at all similar to Miami? Terry Rozier isn’t even remotely close to James Harden.
Not everybody is a shooter, Jimmy and Bam both aren’t shooters and Herro ain’t a passer.
As for the seeding, Miami is 7th and are 4-6 in there last 10 so Jimmy mode and timing there run for the playoffs it just ain’t true.
Like I said they are a scary team and not one I’d want to see in the first round but they hardly strike fear like they used too. I’d say they are the weakest title contender
Tyler Herro averages 20.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 4.3 apg. How is that not a passer. Jimmy Butler is shooting 50% from FG and 44% from 3 pt, and 87% from free throw line. Not a shooter?? Bam don’t shoot three’s, but drops mid-range and is hitting 50% from FG while averaging 20, 10 and 4. Rozier was averaging 20, 4 and 6. You seen his stat lines the past 5 games. He is scoring, rebounding and diming.
Miami changed their offense to Jimmy. They are riding him, and playing off of him. They made the shift a couple of weeks ago when they decided to hit the “go” button.
Miami has won 4 of their last 5 games coming off of the losing streak. Team focus has now completely shifted.
Not the same team.
Actually I would have 6 of the 7 other Eastern Conference teams you listed as favorites against Miami if healthy. The only team Miami should be favorites over is Orlando. Embiid will be back, to have Philly 8th is just dumb. Boston has the best starting 5 and the Knicks 1-12 are the deepest team in the East. Cleveland has the best scoring backcourt in the East and the best overall defense with two rim protectors in Allen and Mobley.
What seed was Milwaukee last year??? What seed was Boston last year??? What happened when they played Miami, a Play-In team, in the playoffs?? What happened to Boston against Miami 2 years ago???
Do you really think Embiid is coming back at 100%???? Exactly what addition did Philly make at the trade deadline???
Cleveland had the best scoring backcourt in the East last year. How did that work for scoring points against the Knicks in the playoffs???? You seen Darius Garland’s numbers since coming back from the injury????
Milwaukee and Cleveland will be playing each other in the 2nd round as the #2 and #3 seeds. They will also get to likely play in the first round against “healthy” as you describe it, Embiid and the Knicks.
Philly and the Knicks are going to fall in the standings while they get healthy. They are lining up as #7 and #8 seeds. 1st round exits.

I’m guessing it’ll be
Kyrie Luka Jones Jr Washington Lively
Exam THJ Green Kleber Gafford
Hardy OMP Powell
Not bad at all and I’m glad they did something. Seems as if the Mas GM could do with some work negotiating as he got prices out on a deal for Kuzma and even Charlotte have them a steep deal for PJ, meanwhile Knicks got OG, Bojan and Burks all without giving up a first.
But overall on paper they look tidy.
My concern would be on ball defence against iso heavy teams in the playoffs. Kyrie and Luka aren’t stopping anything, sure Jones Jr is alright but what happens when your matches up with Kawhi PG and Harden… or even the lakers LeBron and AD … It’s very reliant on your guards offence to carry you which is risky, 1 injury or poor performance and it’s over.
Little surprised no one went in a defensive stopper like Caruso or Thybulle at the deadline to counter a team like the Mavs or incase they play Curry and GSW in the first round or something.
Post deadline power rankings in each conference. (Top 4 only)
1) Boston
2) NYK
3) Milwaukee
4) Phily
1) Denver
2) Minnesota
3) Clippers
4) Phoenix
I’d put Cleveland 3rd over Milwaukee and slide Philly to 5th but I like your top 4 otherwise in the East. I just think Cleveland has enough offense and defensively they will be a problem. Milwaukee is a little bit too much offense, I don’t think Lillard makes up on offense what you lost in Jrue Holiday in defense as weird as that sounds. I’d just switch the Clippers and Nuggets. I think OKC is better than Phoenix but it’s really close, I’d have OKC 4th just because of injury concerns with Phoenix. That’s the difference for me.
Knicks and Philly both not healthy and headed for #7 and #8 seeds in the East. That matches up with playing Boston, Milwaukee or Cleveland in the first round.
How does Randle hurt, Robinson hurt, Hartenstein hurt, OG surgery with RJ, Grimes and IQ traded equal #2 for the Knicks????
Dude your basing these rankings or seeding or whatever you are on injuries at the moment? You don’t think NYK will be HEALTHY come playoff time? Yeah Embiid is a question mark at the moment, but nobody was going to think they’re coming out of the East even with him being healthy.
Even if they come out of the East it’s results to getting smoked by the West representative yet again due to not having enough size to combat one of the bigs out in the West.
Miami was absolutely giving Denver problems in the Finals until they just flat out ran out of bodies. Miami’s run last year wasn’t a healthy one. Herro came back late.
Knicks – Robinson will NOT be 100%. OG will just be getting back with his “new” team. Randle ain’t coming back like he sat out a couple of days. They have injury and chemistry issues to solve. 2025 is their time.
I’m not saying they will FINISH 2nd in the east guy, I’m saying in terms of talent and talent ALONE….they have gotten better.
Now where is your reason given they got Bojan? I love how you mention Grimes, but don’t bring up the player they traded FOR Grimes….
SMH
Does Bojan matter in the end??? He will see 10-15 minutes per game once OG comes back. Thibs plays really, really short rotations. OG is gonna go 35 minutes per night with ALL the rest of the starters.
Does Terry Rozier matter in the end??? You think Bojan is going to be Evan Fournier to the bench? 20 PPG and he can stretch the floor. Man you really are clueless lmfao.
Rozier absolutely matters. He will be on the floor. Thibs plays short rotations. Precious didn’t see minutes until the injuries piled up. Thibs plays “his guys”, and he plays them heavy minutes. When you get hurt …. It’s next man up. Just ask Hartenstein. Bojan ain’t no difference-maker like that anyway. Lack of talent is the #1 reason why the Pistons are terrible.
Once OG returns …. Bojan will see about 10 minutes more per game than Fournier was getting.
I cannot believe somehow you made me defend the Knicks lol. As a Bulls fan, I can careless about either franchise. But somehow you made me defend the Knicks.
Al, you’re up. Please take over. I can’t defend your franchise anymore. It’s everything I was raised and taught against since the 90’s. LOL.
I love the Knicks. The injuries wrecked anything for this year. They will absolutely be a problem moving forward, and have absolutely built the squad the right way. The timing for this year ain’t there with all of the injuries, and them coming at this point of the season. I love Thibs!
Thibs gana been his old self. Never used to play you g guys. He does on Knicks. Made trades to get deeper. More capable bodies. Never did that before. Even. if you don’t have top talent. You have deep talent, talented enough. You can compete with the best.
Knicks will be 100% healthy for playoffs. Have no doubt on that. So I see them as a tough out in playoffs. Please bring in Miami
Brunson
OG
Bojan
Hart
Randle
Or replace Donte with Bojan on defensive possessions.
And this team wouldn’t get past Miami???? ……
Miami wins that 4-2 easy.
or Miami gets swept easy.
Heat are not beating a healthy Knicks team. No way.
Grant Williams is a very bad player, good enough for BOS, but nowhere near good enough for DAL!
Good riddance to bad garbage!
PJ Washington is lights out better.
DAL is so much better after the trades…
Luka time!!!
Dallas has gotten better. Added what they needed most. Now if they sign Dinwiddie. They will be deep and experienced. I can see them as a tough out. Definitely work
