The Raptors don’t intend to keep veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie on their roster after acquiring him from Brooklyn. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link), Toronto will waive Dinwiddie before he plays in a game for Toronto.
Dinwiddie is on an expiring contract and has a $1.5MM bonus in his contract if he appears in 50 games. He’s at 48 games now, so he would’ve locked that bonus in with two more appearances and the Raptors would prefer not to be on the hook for that money, since the point guard isn’t in their future plans.
The deal that sent Dennis Schröder and Thaddeus Young was about creating more cap flexibility for the 2024 offseason by moving off of Schröder’s multiyear deal.
It has been a down year so far for Dinwiddie, who averaged just 12.6 points per game on .391/.320/.781 in 48 games (all starts) for Brooklyn while logging 30.7 minutes per night. Those shooting percentages are well below his career rates and the scoring average is his lowest in a healthy season since he averaged 12.6 PPG in 2017/18.
Still, he’s likely to generate plenty of interest on the buyout market, with the Lakers among the teams that might be a fit. Because Dinwiddie’s base salary of $18.9MM exceeds the mid-level exception, he’ll be ineligible to sign with the Celtics, Nuggets, Warriors, Clippers, Heat, Bucks, and Suns, whose team salaries are above the tax apron. He also won’t be permitted to rejoin the Nets.
We have waited and we have seen…
This Toronto front office had a good run up to the championship, but has been really, really bad ever since.
Agreed. It seems like they’re just making things up as they go along. Any good organization/company has a 6month, 1 yr, 3 yr, and 5 yr plan. Toronto seems like they’re just winging it. I hope I’m wrong but between Masai’s comments and actions/inactions, it’s like they don’t know what they want to do. First it was playoffs now it’s shed all salary possible. Players unfortunately don’t really want to sign in TO so what FA can they attract? Cap space is only good if you use it – wisely. Where does Barnes play? Who’s the PF? Wings? Where’s the bench depth? Hopefully they get a top 4 pick in 24 and draft either Topic or Risacher. I’d like them to get Ivisic and Ighodaro with their 2nd and late 1st as well.
While I agree that it took them way too long to blow up the previous roster and build around Scottie, the moves they have made recently have all been solid.
*coaching (except the schroder signing, amd somehow still holding onto thaddeus young for so long woth so many others at his positions, which never made sense)
Sounds like the league’s not Dunwiddim yet
Wish Knicks sign him. Just for playoffs.
Imo Lakers will go after him. He can help them.
Would love Dinwiddie over Lowry in buy out. However he was traded to get out of NY
Lakers
Knicks can sign him. They have roster spots. I think they should too!
TOR’s issue is not getting and cutting Dinwiddie. It’s screwing the pooch on Brown.
Expect all the big names… Lakers, Boston, Milwaukee, and Pheonix
But if he wants to showcase his skills and earn that second contract then maybe he looks for a starting gig on a less competitive side like a San Antonio.
Dinwiddie would pair nicely with Vassell and Wemby, if I’m the spurs I’d offer him a good 3.5 mil for the rest of the season or something
SA is dead last in the league in 3pt shooting – Dinwiddie is exactly the kind of guy they should be avoiding.
Only team out of those you named that could and should sign him is LA. Celtics, Nuggets, Warriors, Clippers, Heat, Bucks can’t touch him.
Hed start for Philly
Dinwiddie will sign with the Clippers..
Bouknight and Hayes still have a future imo. Spurs should be all over Hayes ……
