9:38pm: The deal is official, according to announcements from the Sixers and Celtics.
2:00pm: The Sixers and Celtics have agreed to a trade that will send third-year guard Jaden Springer to Boston in exchange for a second-round pick, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
The 2024 second-rounder the 76ers are receiving will either be Chicago’s or New Orleans’, whichever is more favorable, per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer (Twitter link).
Boston will acquire Springer using its $6.2MM traded player exception, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Moving Springer means Joel Embiid will be the only player on Philadelphia’s roster with a guaranteed contract for 2024/25, Marks adds.
The 28th pick of the 2021 draft, Springer only appeared in 18 regular season games for 95 total minutes over his first two NBA seasons. Still just 21 years old, the former Tennessee Volunteer has played 32 games this season, averaging 4.0 points in 11.8 minutes per contest.
At 6’4″ and 204 pounds, Springer has a sturdy build for a guard, and he put up strong defensive stats in the NBA G League from 2021-23. He hasn’t provided much on offense at the NBA level, however, with a career shooting line of .416/.238/.810.
Springer makes $2.2MM this season and will earn a guaranteed $4MM next season after the Sixers picked up their option on the final year of his rookie scale contract. While it’s hard to envision him playing much for Boston this season, he didn’t cost much to acquire, and the team clearly likes him as a prospect. His contract could be also useful for salary-matching purposes in 2024/25.
Really Philly? I thought this guy was just hitting his straps with more ceiling room? Bird rights and attainable beyong this season like Tillman. Springer going to get better. Stevens is killing in the front office role.
Yea I really like this kid! Great pick up
It’s important to protect the 2nd round pick
Top-58 protected
Daryl Morey is a useless POS. Springer locked down Luka on Mon night, and Steph last night, and we deal him to our archival Division/Conference leading Celtics for a 2nd Rd pick. Their biggest need was to pick up Andre Drummond, to help w/D and rebounding for the next month, since we have Mo Bamba as our only player over 6’9 til Joel returns. They trade Pat Bev, a great team player whose having a really good season for Cam Payne and a 2nd, trade House and a 2nd for absolutely nothing! And now a 21 year old G who will be a star defender for a 2nd Rd pick, Morris & Korkmaz w/3 2nds for Hield who can shoot 3s when he’s on, but plays 0 defense, and they will hopefully sign Lowry as reported,
Reed/Bamba til Jo comes back, Tobias, Nico, Oubre, Lofton, KJ, at F, Maxey, Hield, Lowry, Melton, Payne then Council & Smith?
Is he as bad as Memphis and Detroit’s owners?
Springer will never average above 4 points in the NBA. He is a 8- 10 minute guy if he is in the league 3 years from now. Jojo needs shooters around him when he returns in late March early April. Look for Morey to add more to his haul of heild and Payne grasshopper.
Given up way early on Springer. Kyle Lowry to the rescue LOL.
It is home for him so most likely.
Bizarre move from Philly – they’ve routinely assigned him to guard the oppositions best offensive player, and he’s done an exceptional job of that recently. Clamped up Curry real good yesterday. So they ship him out for a second round pick the next day? Wow.
Boston thinks the Bucks and Knicks are the real threats in the east. Both of these moves are counters to those opponents. Springer is to guard Lillard and Brunson and Tillman is guard Gianis and Randle. Also they can play more mins from now until the playoffs without much drop off. Celtics can then rest Tatum, Brown, Porzingis as they see fit.
Brad’s advantage is that he used to recruit players. He knows bball and how to grade talent. Other GMs can do it too, but they dont have the years of exp he does by being a College Coach.
If they can teach Springer how to shoot. They stole this guy.
Good move. A young untested 1st round pick from 2 years back. 11 steals in his last 5 games for Philly. 6’4″, 204. Strong defender. Hit 20 of 46 threes in his one year of college. Lots of things to like. Go Celtics!
