As of Tuesday afternoon, the Mavericks and Warriors weren’t engaged in any active discussions about an Andrew Wiggins trade, Marc Stein reports within his latest Substack article.
Dallas has repeatedly been cited as a team with interest in Wiggins, but sources tell Stein that interest has been overstated. As Stein previously reported, the Mavericks have been prioritizing power forwards over small forwards. Wiggins has played at the four, but is more of a small-ball option there and is a more traditional three.
That stance may explain why one recent report suggested that Dallas also hasn’t shown serious interest in Dorian Finney-Smith, another player who would be a smaller four. According to Stein, P.J. Washington of the Hornets and Kyle Kuzma of the Wizards are two of the players who remain on the Mavs’ radar.
Here’s more from Stein:
- Speaking of Finney-Smith, Stein and Ian Begley of SNY.tv each confirm that the Bucks have shown interest in the Nets forward. However, Brooklyn has sought at least one first-round pick in return for Finney-Smith and Milwaukee doesn’t have one to trade, so it’s unclear whether the two sides would be able to find common ground. The Nets have been signaling that they’re willing to hang onto Finney-Smith beyond the deadline if their asking price isn’t met, Stein writes.
- After reporting that the Bucks and Mavericks had exploratory talks about Bobby Portis and Grant Williams, Stein says those discussions didn’t advance any further because Milwaukee isn’t interested in a one-for-one swap and would want additional compensation from Dallas to make a move. Stein doesn’t specify what sort of additional compensation the Bucks sought, but given that they’re in win-now mode, presumably they wanted another rotation player or the sort of draft assets that could be flipped for one.
- Among potential Wizards trade candidates, Tyus Jones and Delon Wright are “increasingly” viewed as more likely to be moved than Kuzma, says Stein.
- Like Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Stein has heard that Kuzma, Trail Blazers guard Malcolm Brogdon, and Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic could all stay put this week, though he acknowledges there’s a chance one or more of those teams is posturing to gain leverage.
From what i read the Mavs offered 2 of their bench players for Wiggins that are not wanted by the Mavs. Wiggins is better than the 2 players they offered.
Thing about Dal is none of their contracts are expiring and almost all are underwater
Cuban, who I use to like, has slowly and methodically driven this team into the ground. Looks like Charlie Cuban Brown will try to kick the football off of Lucys hold one more time tho
Luka Mania is already in full bloom imo
Carlise got Cuban Into analytics literally after the 2011 finals. They have missed on every trade and draft pick sense then. (Luka Brunson and lively being the exceptions). went after rondo and KP and got stuck with Powell and thj. Not to mention irving as well who had missed more than half the games so far
Agree David, I did like this last Dal draft but too little too late Imo, they needed these drafts 3 years ago
Cubans rage towards Kp (taking an L just to not have too see his face) was a bit immature Imo. You can probably do this in Business and be fine as CEO but they had a small sliver to re-direct at the time of his trade (KP) and completely (re) faceplanted
Nico threw a little jab at KP saying mavs wanted players that were “reliable” to play and not miss games after the KP trade…. which is funny because then they go trade for irving who has been hurt and “not reliable” so nico should trade irving right? Nico is a hypocrite and contradicts himself… smh. Nico only cares about +/- numbers
From what I read the mavs have no interest in Wiggins and are more focused on addressing their obvious need for Murray.
Pj washington and miles bridges for josh green and grant williams (who hornets were interested in Off-season) would be a great swap for both teams
Which team adds a draft pick and what one?
If anything dallas trades a future 2nd.
Lakers and Warriors are tje Most Desperate to Make a Move
How long before Doncic demands a trade out of Dallas?
When Lakers have cap space
Never? Dallas allows Luka to play the way he wants: maximizing his stats over wins or anything else
Probably if Nuggets want to make a move which I doubt as they just won the championship. Doncic would probably only be fine as 2nd to Jokic
Blazers and Pistons need their heads examined if they can’t work out deals for Brogdon and Bojan. There’s no reason for either dude to be on either team.
Teams will have more flexibility ans picks assets in the off season
But they’ll get a smaller return because the acquiring team wouldn’t get them for this year’s playoff run.
PO teams have other needs and no picks to offer to go all in, also second apron restrictions are just around the corner
So you’re saying literally all playoff teams have ‘other needs’ than Brogdon or Bojan and also that all of them have ‘no picks to offer’? Going to have to disagree with you there. OKC, for example, has a million picks plus tradeable contracts like Bertans and Micic. Plus they could use a dude like Brogdon off the bench.
Knicks could also trade for him but they will not, he could fit perfectly in Minny, Lakers but no picks … I can see Orlando make the move
OKC can have anybody with their picks but their biggest need is a backup 5 they have enuff ball handling
OKC needs size more than another guard.
Why would another team want either player? It takes two teams to make a trade. They really don’t move the needle for teams looking to make a playoff run.
Suns need a PG, Brogdon could definitely help them make a run.
Blazers look for 1st picks suns like many contenders have none …
@Giants74: Are you seriously asking why a team would want Brogdon or Bojan? Brogdon was Sixth Man of the Year just last year and Bojan is averaging 20 ppg on .468/.415/.779 shooting. Are you just not familiar with either player? Half of the teams currently in the playoffs could use either one.
A good reason, with either player, would be that he’s more valuable to his current team than any potential trade destination.
That’s arguably true with Brogdon. He serves an important stablizing function in POR, hopefully helping their young guards avoid the un-development that the young guards in HOU and DET have gone through. Certainly Brogdon “could” help a playoff team IF he’s healthy going into the playoffs (but he hasn’t ever been, even when he tries to play). LAC had a deal in place with BOS for Brogdon in the offseason, where it was only going to cost them the 30th pick in last year’s draft. They looked at his medicals and called it off. In short, he won’t net a FRP unless some team is more willing to take a “win-now” risk than the LAC. I doubt he’ll be worth less, and could be worth more, next year when he’s an expiring deal.
Bojan is different. His contract was designed to be traded. But DET FO is run by a Ujiri disciple, and this is what they do.
Let’s trade Klay. Klay for GP2, CP3 on the injured list!
I’m not sure where all this nonsense about Wiggins being a great defensive player comes from. He’ll make an off-ball slide and snatch now and then but….
When with the Twolves his assignments shot 59% from the field one year . That was in when wide open shooters were 58%. So basically he was worse than not guarding someone….
It comes from his play in the 2021-22 season and playoffs.
