FEBRUARY 27: The Warriors have officially signed Kerr to his extension, the team announced today in a press release (Twitter link).
“We’re excited that Coach Kerr will continue to lead our team in the coming years with his well-deserved contract extension,” Joe Lacob said in a statement. “Steve has played an immense role in our success over the last decade, success that has been duplicated by very few coaches in NBA history. His resumes as both a player and coach are astonishing, but not surprising, because his management skills and integrity as a person are off-the-charts and on display every single day. Simply put, he is the kind of individual you want leading your team and his championship pedigree is beyond impressive.”
FEBRUARY 23: Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is signing a two-year, $35MM contract extension, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Kerr will reportedly become the highest-paid coach in the league when his new deal kicks in next season. As Wojnarowski observes, Gregg Popovich technically makes more annually, but he’s also San Antonio’s president of basketball operations.
Now in his 10th season as the Warriors’ lead coach, Kerr holds a career regular season record of 501-264 (.655) and has accumulated a 99-41 (.707) playoff record, winning four championships and making six Finals appearances during that span.
Kerr also won five championships with the Bulls and Spurs across 15 seasons as a role player in the NBA, with other stops in Phoenix, Cleveland, Orlando and Portland. While he was limited in other areas, he was an elite shooter, with a career slash line of .479/.454/.864 across 910 regular season games (17.8 MPG).
Owner Joe Lacob has expressed confidence about retaining Kerr for the past several months, including as recently as last week, and now a deal has finally come to fruition. The 58-year-old was in the final year of his contract.
While Kerr’s coaching record speaks for itself, the Warriors have certainly had their challenges in 2023/24, with Draymond Green being suspended multiple times and at one point Jonathan Kuminga reportedly losing faith in Kerr. However, after discussing the situation with the veteran coach, Kuminga has gone on to play the best stretch of basketball of his career.
Kerr’s extension aligns with the remaining years that Stephen Curry is under contract, observes Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link), who confirms the news. Both Kerr and Curry now have deals that run through 2025/26.
Kerr’s contract situation is now resolved, but Klay Thompson — another key member of Golden State’s dynasty — remains an impending free agent. Lacob has said he hopes Thompson will remain a Warrior for the rest of his career.
After going 9-2 over their past 11 games, the Warriors are currently 28-26, the No. 10 seed in the West.
Let’s go!!!
Warriors fans what do you think? Good move, bad move, somewhere in the middle?
I’m thinking it’s probably a good move because finding a good head coach is Pretty Tough today. Look at the Bucks and other teams struggles with the revolving door.
Kerr has some championships and history with this team and familiarity and that has to be a positive thing to go along with his skills.
An absolute necessary move. Kerr is essentially the reason why Steph, Dray and Klay became the HoF players they are
Great move, continuity is so Big Imo, a lot of teams talk it, lot less walk it
I like the move. He kinda got lucky landing with Curry, Klay, and Draymond already in place. But, even though it has had a few bumps, the rebuild/transition is going quite well. Wiseman still has a chance. The Kuminga thing was a bit overblown. The future looks bright. It will be interesting to see where it goes.
The timing is a good move for the stretch run but the 2 yr only is a bit confusing. Why only 2 yrs? Does it mean 2 more yrs of title window with the trio? I suppose they can always extend again, but Spo and Monty have 8 yr contracts. Heck, even Pop signed a long term contract. Who knows, maybe Kerr has interest to move into FO??
If Kerr wanted a FO job, he should have stayed in Phoenix.
Kerr said he wants to play out the trio time with the warriors. Once Curry, Thompson, and Green retire in about 3 years my guess Kerr retires too.
@ Gary, I think it makes sense. He’s made some game losing mistakes this season by playing the vets too many minutes and pulling hot hands because he uses repeating rotation minutes and it was time
The good news is that he’s seemingly learning from those mistakes recently..
Absolutely the right move…
Times well with the retirements of Steph, Dray and maybe Klay.
Hear me know and believe me later; ityprivanpy the timeframe that Lacob steps aside and turns the team over to his sons. They already have prominent roles…
I’m a subscriber though do not seem to have an edit function. Pardon the typo :)
No problem, for me the edit opportunity is online on the website. I don’t use the app. And it’s only 5 minutes.., after that you can’t edit anymore.
Clay Thompson will be gone after this year.. just not same player anymore and I don’t see him taking 8 mill a year to stay
Clay might be gone but Klay will be back.
Two more years of Steph’s prime wasted with a clueless coach running things. At least that stupid contract doesn’t count against the salary cap.
If Kerr were such a terrible coach, Curry would had him fired years ago. I know you struggle with that. It always seems to confuse you.
Why bother responding to this clown? He is not a warriors fan and does not understand even the basics of basketball. Kerr is one of the greatest coaches of all time. End of story.
I don’t think Kerr is as good a coach as they make him out to be. Way too much money for a coach.
Nearly the entire league is running Kerrs system… but ok.
And Kerr is also still running Kerrs system. A good coach keeps improving and evolving but the Warriors are still doing the same thing that everyone else is now ready for.
Steph Curry is the Warriors system, you clown. Even Durant acknowledged that.
You sir could not dream what I know about basketball.
No they aren’t. The majority of the league is playing playing pick and roll basketball which Kerr runs the least.
Warriors don’t have 4 AS’s playing at once.. they are under .500 with Kerr as coach… Heat have 1 AS…. play in 3 of the last 4 ECF and 2 NBA Finals….. Steve Kerr should give half his paycheck to Curry, Thompson, Green, Wiggins, and Durant
Huh?
No wonder Klay is pissed.. they offered him 2yrs at 42mil…
Good move by the Warriors. Is Kerr worth $35M over two years, probably not. That said, like Pop, he’s earned the right to pilot the ship as long as he and the vets want him to after winning four titles and going to 6 NBA Finals.
Klay gets re-signed to a 1+1 this offseason, and the band is allowed to play a couple more tunes before they all ride off into the sunset.
