While the 21-25 Warriors have had a disappointing season to this point and are once again projected to have a record-setting payroll and luxury tax bill, ownership hasn’t given a mandate for the front office to do anything but try to improve the roster, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link), who says Golden State won’t be looking to simply offload the large salaries of players like Andrew Wiggins or Chris Paul.
Charania includes Klay Thompson in that group as well, though ESPN’s Brian Windhorst previously stated the Warriors aren’t interested in moving Thompson.
Charania confirms the Mavericks are interested in Wiggins, and adds the Pacers to the list of teams intrigued by the former No. 1 overall pick. Any deal sending Wiggins to Indiana would likely have to include Buddy Hield for salary-matching purposes, though that’s just an observation, not reporting.
According to Charania, unless the Warriors are blown away by an offer, they’re unlikely to trade any of those three veterans, particularly with their values at low points for various reasons. To this point, Charania says Golden State hasn’t received an offer that “moves the needle.”
Here are some more trade rumors from around the NBA, all courtesy of Marc Stein at Substack:
- Once viewed as a strong trade candidate, Trail Blazers guard Malcolm Brogdon may have swung in the opposite direction. He has publicly said he’s happy in Portland and would prefer to stay, with Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports later reporting there was skepticism Brogdon would be moved. According to Stein, there have been “recent rumblings” that Brogdon is actually hoping to sign an extension with the Blazers. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year is not eligible for an in-season extension, but will become extension-eligible during the 2024 offseason, when he will make $22.5MM in the final year of his deal. Given Portland’s place in the standings and the presence of Anfernee Simons and Scoot Henderson, Stein wonders whether the Blazers will actually consider an extension for a 31-year-old veteran like Brogdon, but says the idea of a “longer stay than anticipated” has “gained credence.”
- Given their limited asset pool — they can only trade one future first-round pick right now — the Lakers appear more likely to make a minor trade than a major one, Stein says. They continue to be linked to the Raptors‘ Bruce Brown, but Jarred Vanderbilt‘s injury weakened the roster, and Stein suggests Los Angeles may not see a major difference-makers in the market, particularly for what it can offer. Waiting until the offseason would free up more options, as the Lakers could then trade as many as three first-round picks.
- According to Stein, Bulls guard Zach LaVine (foot surgery), Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant, and the Cavaliers‘ Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen are among the “marquee players” who won’t be moved this season. Dejounte Murray and Kyle Kuzma are “two of the most coveted players” ahead of the February 8 deadline, but because they’re on long-term contracts, the Hawks and Wizards, respectively, might need to be patient to receive the assets they want in return, as first-round picks are hard to come by at the moment, per Stein.
Warriors turned down 2 offers for Wiggins that were called weak offers. I guess teams are just offering their bad contracts for him. Warriors need his defense since Green is the only player that plays great defense on the team. Kuminga is not tradeable since he is the best young player on the team.
Trade Wiggins
Warriors need a third team to help them.
Trade idea
Warriors get Grant Williams, Caruso, Powell
Mavs get Wiggins and Moody
Bulls get Holmes, Mavs First, Warriors top-20 protected First
Salary matching
Powell salary $4 million a year
I hope not! The Warriors already have a small team …Grant wouldn’t be much value. Powell has Zero value. Caruso would be a nice pick up but not for Wiggings, Moody and a 1st
Awful trade for the Warriors, Caruso is an excellent defender but he has had injuries in the past that derailed him a lot.
Grant Williams is Draymond Green if he grew up in the suburbs. No thanks.
Powell is nice but I dont think he brings something that Moody/Wiggins dont bring.
Also, trading Caruso for RICHAUN HOLMES….sheesh
I just realised it was DWIGHT Powell, and not NORMAN Powell.
This is an absolute L for everyone but the Mavs.
Not bad in theory, but Wiggins having a resurgence is more likely to happen than winning with Grant Williams/Powell and Caruso. Caruso wo. uld help as the off ball card, and point when Steph rests. Grant Williams isn’t as good as people thought last year
Brogdon would be great for NY. I hope Portland doesn’t get greedy. I hope all it takes is Fournier and 2 picks and NO GRIMES!!!
I hope you mean 2nd round picks because if they are refusing to send 2 firsts to Atlanta for Murray I would hope they wouldn’t trade 2 firsts for Brogdon
The reality is… The Warriors need Wiggins even at a subpar level for Wiggins more than any other team…
Other teams want the player that helped on that last title run… But who knows if that player exists and just wants to get away from Draymond so is phoning it in…
warriors are not a good team right now. Its like they have no motivation to play well and make too many dumb mistakes. So no reason trading just to be in and out of the play in. Let CP3 and Thompson walk to us ethe money to sign a big man that they need.
I thank Wiggins will play better as they get closer to the playoffs, and GS will be a playoff team (7-8 seed) or play in team at worst. I think this year, seeding won’t make as big an impact as it has in years past. Boston has a big H advantage, and DEN as well. I think there are about 6 teams capable of winning it all, 1) BOS 2) PHI 3) NYK 4) LAC 5) DEN 6) OKC- MIL has the talent, but Doc Rivers will make sure they fall. Miami is a possibility, but they don’t seem to be the team they were, GS and LAL can’t be counted out, but I don’t see it in the cards this year. I’m predicting DEN vs PHI finala
I mean the jazz and thunder control like 75 percent of the first till 2030 so it’s no wonder they’re hard to come by lol
Not exactly. It’s eleven teams really in control of draft capital or 75% of it. Jazz and thunder certainly have the lion share of that group. The other teams are something due to stephien rule.
I do see the thunder parting with picks soon as they have developed their core and will start to get expensive. They need to consolidate picks into players by upgrading and making players picks. Players are the asset that wins titles but picks is the future for it.
Your going to see A LOT of players very very happy with their current teams moving forward, its how you get paid today, they (the players) will figure out how and where the perfect fit is (for them) after the ink drys
But…The Blazers need to expire about ~10 mill just to stay under the tax next year after their rookie signings – Brogdon is moving, and expiring’s of some sorts are coming back
Id bet 3 seconds over a real first , maybe a faux first happens so Cronin can feel good for a day
I agree on Brogdon, when you see a puff piece about a guy who ‘iabt likely to be moved – especially Brogdon, a 31 yr old PG who is in a roster full or young Ga like Scoot, Simon, and Sharpe, with very little front court youth, Brogdon will be dealt by THU
I’d do wiggs for buddy straight up and call it good
I was thinking about that too after reading the article.
But the Warriors defense would be atrocious and offensively the other team can close out on Buddy if there’s no paint threat on offense. That’s the warriors, no paint thread on offense.
So thinking it through it would make the Warriors worse and I think Dunleavy sees that.
They way the Blazers have been shopping Grant, Thybulle and Brogdon I will be surprised if any of the three remain in PDX after the deadline. Mainly because they need Scoot and Sharpe to play free and not by a payscale offense. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Simons delt since he is so ball dominant and takes away from the team that will thrives off ball movement. Most of Portland fans need to see less ISO ball (the real reason Lillard is gone) and a more unselfish style of play.
I agree on all other than Simon being dealt. Scoot and Sharpe need to take that next step before moving Simon, fabs would be pissed
That might be the Blazers thinking too on Simons. Simons could be delt though because Sharpe has to be Scoots option #1 along with Ayton option #2. But Simons has made strides lately playing off the ball, so he just might be able to do something Lillard would NOT do “pass the ball” to wide open teammates.
Paying CP3 was a brain fart. Klay rejected good money by all reports, if you can believe reports. Warriors need to decide are we paying for past work put in or future work put in. Moody needs to play more and up until recently so does Kuminga. I’d be saying bye Klay and next off season, bye Draymond while you still get something of value for him.
Mitchell and Allen not being moved before the deadline is not news. They are the second seed in the East and the hottest team in the league since December 16.
