The NBA has fined Hawks guard Trae Young $35K for making an “inappropriate and unprofessional” gesture toward a referee in the fourth quarter of Monday’s loss to Chicago, the league announced today in a press release (Twitter link).
With 3:58 left in the game, Young missed a three-pointer and fell to the court after bumping into Bulls forward Torrey Craig. He was called for a flopping violation and subsequently objected to the call by rubbing his fingers together in a “money” gesture, an implication the league obviously objected to (Twitter video links).
The Hawks, who were down 120-111 at the time of the incident, lost the game by a score of 136-126.
It’s not the first time this season that Young’s behavior toward a game official has cost him some money. He was fined $25K in December for “confronting and directing inappropriate language toward a game official” while arguing a last-second non-foul call.
Of course, that $60K in fine money represents a minuscule portion of Young’s full-season salary. He has a $40,064,220 cap hit in 2023/24 and is owed nearly $138MM over the next three seasons after this one.
Based Trae
Not at all. That flop was so bad and he’d already been flopping/doing his usual running into guys the whole game
This is big news. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep without knowing this.
I always love these comments because YOU clicked the story
Yes I did. LOL.
Good for Trae, the truth must be said!
I’ve seen far worse gestures than that. What’s next? A player gets fined for an eye roll or for sighing?
It’s the implication that gambling money is affecting the officiating. NBA doesn’t want that despite the fans seeing how bad the officiating is.
I always looked the gambling affiliation in sports as a separation of church and state, and today I see nothing but sports betting commercials, in game studio odds, and post game betting analytics hosted and/or sponsored with/by teams. Betting has always been big in sports, and tech has expanded it even more so, but at some point the line needs to be drawn.
What’s the juice for said line :)
Separation of church and state is a myth. Our currency literally says that we trust God.
It was added almost 200 years after the constitution was drawn. Wouldn’t call that a myth.
Worst officiated sport: Football by a mile, then baseball with basketball following and hockey easily the best officiated sport.
Basketball, football and baseball are 1a, 1b and 1c to me.
rasheed wallace was ejected for the eye roll and sigh.
Tim Duncan was ejected for sitting on the bench laughing with teammates.
That one was classic!
Better still, no dialogue with the officials. Just play the game and abandon the histrionics. Talk to an official, get a warning. Talk again, ejected. nothing to talk about. Play the game.
Or burping and farting.
not only are NBA players soft, but the refs are too. I’ll be damned.
Give him a cookie
Trae flopping? No never…
I get the feeling that the Hawks will entertain trade offers for Trae Young in the off season. Hawks need a semi-rebuild and he’ll bring the most in a trade. Trade Capela as well. Listen to offers for Bogdanovic & Hunter. Keep Murray, Jalen Johnson, Okongwu, Bey and Kobe. These players have reasonable salaries and the Hawks would add a FA or two. Trae, yes, he can shoot, but he’s too small and not a great defender.
