Stephen Curry was on the bench for nearly an 11-minute stretch Sunday night as the Warriors dropped a crucial game in Minnesota, writes Kendra Andrews of ESPN. Curry checked out of the game with four minutes remaining in the third quarter and didn’t return until midway through the fourth quarter. He scored 31 points in 30 minutes, but Golden State couldn’t recover as its lead slipped to one game over Houston in the battle for the final play-in spot.
“We can’t expect to just ride Steph game after game after game,” coach Steve Kerr said. “We’ve put the burden of this franchise on his shoulders for 15 years. We can’t expect him to play 35 minutes … If you want to say that him playing 30 minutes instead of 32 is a difference between a win and a loss, I totally disagree with that. We’re trying to win the game. And we’re trying to keep him fresh, too.”
Kerr was determined to not overwork Curry after he played 35 minutes, including the entire fourth quarter, in Friday’s loss to Indiana. Curry said he wants to play as much as he’s “fresh and able to,” but he didn’t question Kerr’s decision.
“The situation will define itself in real-time,” he said. “Every game matters as we’re inching closer to the other end of the standings we never thought we would be in. No one is going to wave the white flag and say we are mailing it in. If that means playing more minutes, I’ll be ready to do that.”
There’s more from the Pacific Division:
- With D’Angelo Russell sidelined by an illness, Spencer Dinwiddie made his second start since joining the Lakers and delivered 26 points in a win over Indiana. He talked to Dave McMenamin of ESPN (Twitter video link) about finding a role in L.A. after signing with the team last month. “It’s just about reading the room and understanding you’re a part of something bigger,” Dinwiddie said.
- Pacers coach Rick Carlisle became the latest opponent to complain about a foul discrepancy after playing the Lakers, tweets Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star. L.A. shot 38-of-43 from the free throw line in the five-point victory, while Indiana was just 9-of-16. “There were certain things that were impossible to overcome,” Carlisle said. “The 27-free-throw differential is one. The 17-foul differential is the other. And I’ll leave it at that.”
- The Clippers are in danger of squandering home court in the first round after losing Sunday to the shorthanded Sixers, notes Kevin Baxter of The Los Angeles Times. L.A. is just a half-game ahead of fifth-place New Orleans. “We talk about it every day,” coach Tyronn Lue said. “Not taking shortcuts and doing it the right way. And so I think they’re frustrated as well. I mean, it’s embarrassing. When you come in minus Joel Embiid, (Nicolas Batum) sits out tonight and you’re playing at home, you have to take advantage of those type of things. You keep talking about it. But at some point, you’ve got to do it.”
Get used to it. The Lakers are being set up to reach the finals. If it has to be through absurd free throw differentials, that’s how it will be. The NBA has become one bad joke.
Lay off the drugs lol. No way Denver losing to this lakers team.
It is true LA Lakers vs Boston in the NBA finals, I think is a done deal, nobody wants to see OKC or Minnesota in the finals and Denver already won a championship so this year it will be Lakers/Boston so get used to see Lakers winning games for now on with alot help from the referees, the NBA will give LBJ and the Lakers another championship the same way that they did in the bubble that was everything fixed for the Lakers to win.
Zero chance lakers make it through 3 road series to make the finals.
Correct. That team ain’t the 1995 Rockets.
Never underestimate the heart of an in season tournament champion
Then why wasn’t it Lakers Celtics last year genius. Or 2020 for that matter. They both made the conf finals but the leauge didn’t rig it then
Foul discrepancy explained; Lakers constantly drive the lane while their opponents live by the outside shot.
Just enjoy the favoritism the Lakers get. Pacers shot from inside the 3pt line was 71 to lakers 64. So to pretend its because of outside shots is absurd.
Did you watch the game or box score Arc ?
Both. Did you count how many times LeBron complained to the Refs on a no call? Put the number in your comment to see if you watched.
Nope was not counting, I did see a sloppy pick up for 48 mins tho
You sure do love paying attention to LBJ huh? Weird, well than you can see Indy is a hack machine and they fouled 6 times in the last 2 mins down and just refuse to guard anyone all game. Pitiful display for a team fighting for top 6 in the East
OK captain once again you have no idea what you are talking about but no different than any of your post. Have you even noticed that since all star break the Refs are letting them play by calling less fouls. Have you ever watched Reeves jerk his head back every time he drives to get foul calls? Maybe cut back on the alcohol next time you watch a game.
Then explain why LeFlop has only been called for 72 fouls all season. Seventy-two? That, in itself, is absolutely absurd.
Because he rarely plays any defense whatsoever.
IDK if you meant 3’s or just outside the paint, but yeah, Lakers drive the lane or hang out in the paint on a high percentage of possessions. I would too if I had AD in the paint all the time.
I want to like Indy but their defense is just beyond awful.
Was like watching a 24 hr fitness pick up game last night as Lakers have a turnstile D as well (27th ) last 2 months
Neither team is going anywhere this year
That lakers pacers game might of been the best one yet for the three Lakers rotation players with the the whistles in their mouths. Less field goals, less three’s made at a lower clip. Slight edge points in the paint to Indy. Boards, steals blocks, turnovers similar. Big deficit in assists, in favour of Indy and lose by 5 off a free throw count of 16 to lakers 43. But but but but but just watch the games they say. Disgraceful, been happening near a qtr of a century.
Lakers and LBJ favouritism mixed together is a bad recipe…
Gambling on top of that is making it harder to take the whole thing seriously…
Replace the refs with technology… Might as well, at least people will be able to have more faith in the sporting element…
