The quality of play in the GLeague has provided a soft landing for those players that enter the NBA draft early but need more seasoning or visibility for their game. The presence of an improving minor league though continues as another factor eating away at the quality of NCAA men’s basketball. Between the transfer portal and professional aspirations there is not the continuity of rosters that leads to fan familiarity with the players. There is a lack of familiar stars in the men’s game and basketball has always been a sport whose popularity is driven by stars.
It is in the women’s NCAA game where the stars are developing and the sport is gaining rapidly in popularity. With NIL money women can earn more money staying in school than going pro. Caitlin Clark had four years to develop into a media sensation. Paige Bueckers will be entering her fifth year as a college player. In the NBA she would be a four year veteran approaching a max dollar contract. At 22 she is the same age as Anthony Edwards who is four years into his NBA career and we have little recall of his one year in college. Paige will forever be associated with UConn basketball.
Congrats to these guys! Lots of hard workers on these lists.
Glad the Jazz actually started playing their G League best. Should make for a very interesting Summer.
Can’t wait for Summer League, for one. I’m also hearing there’s going to be a lot of potential personnel moves as well. Starting with THT not likely to be back…
I really want the Jazz to fully embrace the youth movement. They’re more fun to watch and less predictable than the vets they still have.
Thoughts?
