The Kings have offered incumbent head coach Mike Brown a three-year, $21MM contract extension that would keep him under team control through the 2026/27 season, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (via Twitter). The deal offered by Sacramento could be worth up to $27MM with bonuses, per Charania.
Brown, who is seeking something in the neighborhood of $10MM annually, has not agreed to the offer thus far, Charania adds.
As Kurt Helin of NBC Sports notes (Twitter link), the offer represents half the per-season value of Clippers coach Tyronn Lue‘s just-signed five-year extension (which is said to be worth nearly $70MM) and is for two fewer years.
Sacramento has gone 94-70 during its two regular seasons under Brown, and has made the postseason both times, though the team didn’t get a full playoff series this spring.
Brown was named the league’s Coach of the Year (for the second time in his career) for returning the Kings to the playoffs for the first time in 16 seasons during a charmed 2022/23 run that saw the team finish with a 48-34 record and the Western Conference’s third seed. The Kings fell in seven games to the sixth-seeded Warriors last spring.
In 2023/24, the 46-36 Kings were merely the No. 9 seed in a more crowded West and did not advance beyond the play-in tournament, although they did beat the No. 10 Warriors in their first play-in game.
Prior to his Kings tenure, Brown was the associate head coach for Golden State from 2016-22, wining three titles under head coach Steve Kerr. Before that, he served two stints as the head coach of the Cavaliers, making one Finals appearance, and coached the Lakers. He boasts a 441-286 overall regular season record as a head coach, plus a 50-40 playoff record.
If Sacramento doesn’t pay him a little bit more, they’re gonna be watching him to join another team looking for a good coach
That’s why the franchise has never been to the NBA finals.
As someone who’s seen more Kings game than you’ve seen NBA games, I can promise you that coaching isn’t why the Kings have been bad for 20 years.
My team who I’ve been watching for 45 years has won five NBA championships. How many have the Kings won? Exactly.
You play in the NBA?
They haven’t been to the finals cause of Tim donaghy, that’s it
As much as I wish that was true, you should go rewatch that game. Kings didn’t deserve to get screwed but they also didn’t deserve the win that night.
If we’re referring to 2002 wcf game 6, my recollection of that game was bibby practically getting tackled on late game inbounds passes to give the lakers the late game “steals” they needed to get the win and keep their season alive. I know that series has maybe taken a life of it’s own over the years in terms of legendarily poor officiating, but my memory tells me it was justified although I’ll be honest, it was long enough ago that I can’t speak with so much conviction anymore… And in regards to mike brown, I don’t understand the infatuation with him. As a defensive branded coach, he inherited a team that caught lightning in a bottle and had a historic offense his first season, and then he forced them to try to be more on-brand his second season and they lost their identity and missed the playoffs. What am I missing?
Kidd’s new extension runs through the 2026/27 season
My educational guess is that Jason Kidd signed two year extension $20 million
$10 million each
Why pay him 10M to not win a chip?
They could hire the best coach in the history of the NBA and they still won’t win a championship with that team. Passing on Luka Doncic to draft a player that isn’t even on the team was a major blunder. Terrible leadership, top to bottom.
I like how passing on Luka is solely a Kings short coming. I bet you knew Doncic was gonna be a stud in 2018 huh? Jackass.
I saw him play, of course I knew and so did Mark Cuban. Everyone said that he was the most complete basketball player to come out of Europe. That’s why they traded two first round picks for him. Don’t get upset cause your team is a hopeless cause.
Lmao I bet you knew the Rudy trade was good too. Probably had a 1st rd grade on Jokic. Hell, Im almost positive you knew Kobe’s helicopter was going down because you had a vision!
You have to admit that having Divac as GM and passing on Doncic for Bagley is somewhat head scratching. Doncic literally fit the type of game Divac was accustomed to whereas Bagley, while good coming out of college, had a limited bad of tricks. He was strictly a paint player with little defensive ability – an Andre Drummond type player.
Absolutely. But that was 6 years ago and multiple teams decided not to draft Luka. It also has nothing to do with coaching.
Divac had personal issues with Luka. That’s why he didn’t draft him. Of course he said they drafted for need. Total BS
Back then the need was for talent.
It still is unfortunately
Yeah, but it’s a much better situation than before. They have two players teams would move for in a heartbeat.
I remember when Michael Jordan declared for the draft, Coach Bobby Knight call the GM of the Portland Trailblazers and told him that he needed to draft Jordan. The GM told Bobby that he needed a Center so they were drafting Sam Bowie out of Kentucky. Bobby’s reply to the GM, “Draft Michael and play him at center”. They drafted Bowie and due to being injury prone, he was never more than average. MJ on the other hand, delivered 6 championships in 8 years for the Bulls. If not for the year he retired from the NBA to play baseball, he might have won 7 or 8.
You first got to get to the playoffs, before you start seeking a Championship. Brown has done a great job. Last year, was solely GM McNothing Done’s Fault, why they didn’t make it. Did nothing to improve this team the last off season, and didn’t make one single move at the Trade Deadline. The Coach can only do with what players are given to him to coach. GM needs to be fired. Give Brown his props and give him a raise he deserves.
Low-ball offer. Ty Lue just got $75M over five years.
Overpaid. He hasn’t been the same since Lebron was his coach.
Crazy to me that Vivek is toying around with this. Clearly he sees all the money teams around the league are wasting on other teams coaches. Being reluctant to offer more than 3 years makes sense. But he had to know the AAV was low. Incentive laden deals aren’t ’t moving the needle anymore. Give him 10 mil a year and end the nonsense.
What a joke! Brown brought instant credibility to the Kings. Brown is not some newbie; he has been around. He has superb experience and has gained “character” as a head coach going thru both ups and downs. Right now, there are many coaches making much more than Brown. If you want credibility as a franchise and want to win, you must pay your head coach and bring respectability to your head coach. Brown will be a goner no doubt. Too bad for the Kings fans. :(
The Monty Williams contract is the new bar now. A coach like Mike Brown looks at that contract and thinks “Why should I get a lot less? I’m about as accomplished as Monty” And rightfully so.
Kings can’t botch this. Just give him the 10 million.
Just low balling it Again, so he can state, we tried and Failed. So lets go get someone else and regress for the next 4 yrs.
Maybe kings trade for Ingram.
