The defending-champion Nuggets were eliminated from the postseason in extraordinary fashion by the Timberwolves in Sunday night’s Game 7, blowing a 20-point third-quarter lead at home, writes Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN. According to Youngmisuk, it was the largest Game 7 blown lead in the past 25 years.
Perhaps all the more stunning is the fact that Denver is known for having one of the best home court advantages in the league, going 33-8 in the regular season and only dropping one playoff home game during its championship campaign in 2022/23. In the first round, the Nuggets went 3-0 vs. the Lakers at home. Yet in the semifinal, they dropped three of four to Minnesota.
As Bennett Durando of The Denver Post writes, Nikola Jokic (34 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists) put up his typical huge numbers. However, the reigning Finals MVP and three-time MVP noticeably ran out of gas as the game progressed, settling for jumpers in the second half and going 13-of-28 from the floor overall, including 2-of-10 on threes (he made 6-of-7 from the line). The Serbian star rested for a total of just 84 seconds, all of which came in the first half.
Jokic was humble in defeat, praising the Wolves and specifically their roster construction. Minnesota’s front office is led by Tim Connelly, who drafted Jokic to Denver before getting a raise from the Wolves a couple years ago.
“I mean, I think they’re built to beat us,” Jokic said, per Youngmisuk. “Just look at their roster. They have basically two All-Stars (Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns), two probably first-team defensive players (Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels). Mike Conley is the most underrated player in the NBA, probably.
“From the bench, they have a Sixth Man of the Year (Naz Reid). … (They are) one team that they can do literally everything. They can be big, small.”
Here’s more on the Nuggets:
- Jamal Murray, who was instrumental in last year’s Finals run but has been battling a calf strain, scored his 29th point just over a minute into the second half before adding just six the rest of the way. He finished with a game-high 35 points on a very similar line to Jokic (13-of-27, 4-of-12 on threes, 5-of-5 on free throws). Murray viewed the series differently than Jokic, believing the Nuggets were the superior team, but trying to repeat as champions took its toll. “Just mentally and physically, conjuring up the energy to fight like you’re being hunted,” Murray said. “I think that’s the emotion. When you’re the hunter, you have so much more motivation and you grasp on to anything to prove everybody wrong and you have a constant chip on your shoulder. I don’t know. … I feel like we should have won tonight. That’s the tough part. They beat us, but we had so many great opportunities, including myself, so it’s just tough, man.”
- Second-year wing Christian Braun concurred with Murray’s assessment and said he definitely views the Wolves as a rival now after eliminating a shorthanded Minnesota in last year’s playoffs. “It sucks,” Braun said. according to Durando, “because I think we’re the better team. … I don’t like them. I think that we need more of that in the NBA. They’re a really good team. Really well-coached. Really good players. It’s a matchup that you love to play in. You don’t want to play, like, really friendly with a bunch of teams. I think it’s a really good rivalry for the NBA. I would say it is a rivalry. And that’s why this hurts more.”
- While Jokic and Murray took responsibility, they combined to score 69 points, compared to 21 points on 8-of-28 shooting for the rest of the team, notes Youngmisuk. And the starting lineup, which has consistently been one of the best in the league the past two seasons, was minus-60 overall, per Durando.
- ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Insider link), HoopsHype’s Mark Deeks, and cap expert Yossi Gozlan (YouTube link) preview Denver’s offseason and future salary cap situation, respectively. Starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, one of the team’s top defenders who shot 41.6% from deep in his two regular seasons with the Nuggets, could be their top free agent — he holds a $15.4MM player option and would likely get a raise on the open market. The Nuggets have one of the league’s more expensive rosters, so re-signing the 31-year-old might not be a lock.
- Murray reiterated his desire to play for Canada in the upcoming Olympics in Paris this summer, per Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post. However, Jokic was noncommittal about the possibility of suiting up for the Serbia. “I don’t know, my friend, we will see,” he said. “I need to think about it.”
- Head coach Michael Malone was clearly frustrated after the series and defended his actions and team, calling it a temporary setback, per Youngmisuk. “This is just a momentary delay,” Malone said. “It’s a failure, it’s not fatal. We’ll be back. The better team won, so I’m taking nothing away from Minnesota … but mentally, emotionally, physically, I think guys are gassed. They’re dead tired. They gave me everything I could ever ask for, and that’s why as much as this hurts, I’ll walk out of this building tonight with my head held very high.”
Murray & Jokic both headed back to familiar territory as the hunters this summer at the Paris Olympics. Very hype to see these 2 legends attempt to win their country’s 1st Olympic gold medal in basketball. Jokic is basically gonna be his teams pg but I figure Murray will be used more as a scorer with Shai as Canada’s lead guard
Denver needs to upgrade its bench. Nobody on that 2nd unit matched Naz’s energy and impact when he was in the game. Also, they need a young PG as well. Maybe it’s time to entertain offers for MPJ? Possibly get Simons for him or a Kuzma?
Porter jr $30 mil for a spot up or rythem shooter is crazy. The rest of his game is poor. Shelf life not going to be long either. Time to move off that money.
Who are you trading MPJ for that would upgrade the Nuggets?
Anyone with a mascot or drink bottle. Cap space is more valuable than he at this point. Make moves accordingly afterwards. Honestly what’s he good for if not hitting the 3? @ $30 mil, no thanks, not for me. But if you want an example of a trade not geared around just clearing space. I’d happily trade Porter jr to GSW for Wiggins. What would you do with him?
You haven’t forgotten about Denver winning the championship already have you? That was just last yr & MPJ was a big reason they won. Lol you say if not hitting the 3 as if hitting 3s isn’t an extremely important part of the game. He’s the best shooter on the team if he’s not there they’re obv gonna suffer…. As far as Wiggins for MPJ, the only way I could see Dubs doing this is if they decide to trade Steph & rebuild. As currently constructed they badly need Wiggins & his skills as a defender. Without him or Draymond they are terrible defensively. If they were to move on from Steph (as they should) & start over, they could do worse than a guy like MPJ tho
Nope, every team needs to keep making moves and evolve to try get another chip. Denver aren’t trading Jamal or jokic are they. They need help on the bench and I’m keeping KCP over Porter jr. Warriors could trade Wiggins for MPJ and let klay walk. Steph, pods, mpj 1,2,3. Save some cap space if let klay walk. That was just an example, im sure there’s other avenues. So you’ve reiterated he’s just a shooter. Also decent offensive rebounder if 2 puts at the end of it. Woeful defender, bad passer, can’t create for others, not the best ball handler. There’s a backboard being replaced in denver as we speak from Porter jrs three point shooting from this series.
Other shooters can impact the game in different ways if the stokes a little wayward, not this guy.
Warriors wouldn’t trade Wiggins for MPJ bc it would wreck their defense & any slight viability they had left as contenders.
Nuggets shouldn’t wreck their starting lineup to upgrade their bench. This is clearly one of the best teams in the league. Bringing in a guy like Dinwiddie for the min would help them with zero risk involved. Trading away their best shooter, one of their best young players & franchise cornerstones who they stole in the draft & helped to develop as a pro while overcoming serious injury obstacles would most likely do more harm than anything. They obv aren’t that far away, they were up 3-2 & were up 20 on the 2nd half yesterday. MPJ isn’t a perfect player but he’s obv really really good, not just as a shooter but as a scorer overall & his size/mobility is a big plus as well. But you have to understand that if you take his shooting away from this team they’re not gonna be as good. Even if you plug in a really good defender or an elite rebounder or something. MPJ’s ability to space the floor & be literally one of the best big man shooters on earth is extremely important to Denver’s success. Y’all have to chill with the recency bias in here Fr lol the thing that just happened isn’t the only thing that has ever happened
It was just an example. Like I said, I’d prefer to give him away have the cap space. Sign free agents. .325 for the series, ouch.
The guy didn’t have over 8 points in the last 4 games I was just reading. That type of scoring for $30 mil if true isn’t needed.
Why don’t you take Porter jr in atlanta for Bogdanovic? Denver then resigns KCP. Makes denver smaller but a more efficient scoring team in my opinion. Payton Watson will make another jump up in his play you’d think next season, too.
I would have been willing to trade John Collins along with Bogdan for MPJ. Trae & MPJ are good friends & that would have been a fun duo but Trae is about to be shipped out now. Plus John Collins is gone & now we have Jalen Johnson who is our 4 for the foreseeable future. I guess we could do Dre & Bogdan for MPJ but that would destroy our already below average defense. Hawks aren’t looking for guys like MPJ rn, we need tough, defense minded guys (a main reason I want Keldon Johnson so bad). If it was possible to swap Bogdan for MPJ with $ not mattering I’d do that in a heartbeat but I would never add Dre or Clint to that deal & that’s the only way it could work. Totally agree about Watson continuing to improve tho. Same with Braun
Yeah I rate Braun. I do think he shot it better from deep in his rookie season and needs to be a little more aggressive offensively. Atlanta have that Collins trade exemption to couple with Bogdanovic. Gives denver more wiggle room. I’m sure Atlanta could find Hunter a home elsewhere. Johnson is the goods, robbed of most improved this season in my opinion.
I’m pretty sure you can’t package a trade exception with another contract… as far as Dre im also sure we could find another team for him but the thing is that we need him tho. He’s our best wing defender by far, he’s one of our best shooters, he’s not elite but he’s a prototype NBA 3 & he’s in his prime. Basically our version of Jaden McDaniels
Braun is a keeper. Denver assigned him to defend Antman a lot and he did a very good job of it – I think the organisation just wants to see more offensive development. He was too passive with the ball this postseason and was prone to passing up good looks.
You have a heavy bias towards whatever just happened bro. This is sorta rampant on this site fr. All I can advise is to lean on logic moreso than reacting to whatever just happened
Meanwhile he shot a historically great 20-41 from 3 in the Lakers series… but yea Jokic, Murray & Gordon are gonna cost Denver over $110M next season & still have to re-sign KCP. Nuggets aren’t gonna have any cap space no matter what. link to m.youtube.com
Lakers, hahaha, that’s funny, lakers stink. It’s a what have you done for me lately league. MPJ, Jackson and Nnaji gone gives nuggets a chance to resign KCP and fill out the roster deeper. $36 mil next season, I’d pass that on. You can take him in Atlanta for Bogdanovic if you want.
Lol so your position is that MPJ hitting 20 treys in a 5gm series at a 50% clip don’t count bc as you put it the Lakers stink?
and again losing those 3 guys won’t help Denver fill out their roster at all. They will be an over the cap team this summer no matter what
The Nuggets would be noticeably worse with Wiggins in the lineup over Porter lol
Also, it’s not a “what have you done for me lately” league to front offices, coaches, or intelligence fans, but maybe it is to teenagers with low basketball IQs.
You like most others because of old narratives severely underrate Porter’s defense and passing. Young players usually get better with time and he’s made big strides on defense and passing.
Admittedly he did have a sub par post season but even the most cynical critic would have to admit that he understandably had other things on his mind and was going through some s*it. One of his brothers got banned from the NBA and the other got a six year prison sentence within a week of each other and right before the post season for underway for the Nuggets.
Why should they move on from Curry? Curry is still their best player. With the right pieces around him, Warriors can be contenders again.
Blame on the decline of Wiggins and Thompson for Warriors not making the playoffs. Thompson was scoreless in an elimination game.
Nuggets might be smart to grab a couple of ex-Buffs/local legends (Dinwiddie & KJ Simpson) to upgrade their bench & add a young pg but if I was Denver I’d do my best to draft this kid AJ Johnson… link to m.youtube.com
I would possibly do MPJ for Kuzma and Tyus Jones. Solves their need for another scorer and a backup PG. Also look into the Donovan Mitchell sweepstakes and see what they want. I’m sure Cavs want to move on from Okoro or find a 3 who can scorer more consistently.
Tyus Jones is an unrestricted free agent. Also I’m not sure how Kuzma is much different from MPJ. Replacing MPJ with Okoro is a big downgrade & would create the need for another shooter
You don’t think kuzma is far more versatile than MPJ?
Versatility definitely isn’t the 1st, 2nd or 3rd thing I think of when it comes to Kuzma. They’re both forwards that are natural scorers/great shooters. Kuzma has been in situations where he’s been asked to be the #1 guy, maybe that’s where you get that he’s more versatile. But I mean if MPJ were in DC he’d be a borderline all-star similar to Kuz. Tbh MPJ would prob be one of the highest scoring forwards in the league if he was in Kuzma’s situation. And we’ve obv alr seen Kuz struggle to be effective when he was in the same situation that MPJ is now. Obv his team won the title but he wasn’t able to be effective as a starter alongside Bron/AD the way MPJ has with Jokic/Murray
Needed Bruce, Vlatko & bones. Realistically- Wish p w0t would’ve cracked Malone’s grueling short rotation
When you watch Jokic post up and use his body, he beats the snot out of defenders because he’s built like a 7 foot tall fire hydrant.
The refs watch him hammer defenders with his body and then they call the ticky tack fouls on defenders while he’s shooting.
It must be so fruastrating to guard him.
I never understood why they moved Bones. I mean yeah he wasn’t a team guy but they could have gotten someone much useful than what they got for him. Their lack of bench was exposed in this series.
Everyone last week on this app saying he should have won his 4th straight MVP keep that same energy. Bottom line the 3 time MVP should have played better and lead his team better in this series.
This isn’t about Jokic as much as it is Murray. The media has tried so so hard to hype him up as a star yet he vanished these playoffs. Even 29 isn’t good enough in a half 7. He’s never made an allstar game for a reason. He is a good not great player.
The level of accountability we hold Jokic to vs how we hold the other 9 players in NBA history to have won 3x MVPs.
Two weeks there were media members on ESPN and TNT talking about how the reason the lakers lost game 5 to the nuggets was because the lebron who is oldest player in the league far out of his prime missed a coupe box outs. 2 weeks later and the reigning MVP fresh of a chip loses 3 home games in a series, gets dog walked by 50 in another game and the story is his team around him didn’t do enough.
Call me crazy but it seems like we don’t hold Joker to the same standard we hold the other 3x MVP in the league. Must be nice to make all the money, get all the love and accolades and then when your team flops take none of the blame.
Kobe Bryant went through a bunch of bad to mediocre years between Shaq and Gasol. There was a reason he finally started making the finals again after getting a real allstar teammate. Even Jordan needed Pippen. I’m consistent.
A sixers fan telling Jokic to play better in an elimination game is laughable. Obviously last year the MVP showed up and out right against the main rivals? Quit trolling and realize that no matter what Jokic did last night, it wasn’t enough bc he didn’t receive any help.
lol um exactly where did get that I’m a Philly fan out of anything that I have said? Maybe actually read and respond to what the comment says.
I didn’t say specifically last night either. Jokic’s team lost 3 home games during this series and was losing a game by 50 points. Maybe during game 2 when the wolves were blowing them off the flower the MVP should have not had 14 points after 3 quarters.
Like most people on this app you refuse to hold him accountable. ESPN and TNT both had stories about how 39 year old lebron missing 2 box outs cost the lakers but somehow the current peak prime MVP doesn’t get held accountable for losing 3 home games in a series.
Kobe, Jordan, Lebron, Magic, Karrem just to name some of the other 3x MVP winners would have been roasted if that happened to them.
Oh crap! I’m sorry there’s another guy with the same handle as you “dark”. Apologies lol. I agree Jokic should get blamed but it’s difficult to blame him when you got a chucker outside at 6’10 who can’t even make a shot or drive bc he’s to prideful or timid to get scared.
It’s because you can’t read because I said Jokic is fine and Murray and the rest of the team let him down.
Denver should definitely not trade any of their starters… great line up that really plays well as a team…all they need is 2 solid contributors off the bench…Braun and Jackson decent enough…with the team they have, they can compete with the best next year… just depth is an issue if stars get injured
Can’t believe Nuggets gave it up. Minny has earned it. Didn’t think they had it in them. I guess TWolves still growing as a team. Consistency is hard thing to get to. Especially in the playoffs. I said TWolves would never win. With twin towers. Frankly it is their core of bigs. That is working. Not just twin centers. TWolves have my attention. They are a good team.
Weakest era ever. They can only shoot 3s. Unless magnets are in the ball
I would def look into trading MPJ. If you could have a Bruce brown and another wing for his salary that’s a win imo.
“Weakest era ever” oh god dude give it a rest. Go watch old games everyday then if that’ll make you happier watching basketball. I’ll never understand people who don’t like the sport forcing themselves to not just watch it but go out of their way to speak to others about it.
At least we found the one guy who watches Draymonds podcast.
Stunned that Denver fell to the wolves…
But losong Brown was big… He was a lot more instrumental to their success than MPJ… Whose back issues give me concern for how long his career will be…
Nuggets should keep KCP and trade MPJ for bench pieces as depth was their biggest issue… Turn that money into many options for Malone… Then they should be a vet min hotspot as a contender…
Starting 5
Jokic
Gordon
KCP
Braun
Murray
