People around the league are convinced forward Pascal Siakam will re-sign with the Pacers in free agency, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, but the situation for Siakam’s former teammate OG Anunoby may not be as “cut and dried.”
Executives left last week’s draft combine believing that Anunoby could end up testing his value on the open market by listening to offers from rival teams in addition to the Knicks, sources tell Fischer.
Fischer acknowledges it could end up being a ploy for negotiating leverage, but the Sixers are among the teams with interest in the 3-and-D standout, who could receive $30-40MM annually on his next deal in free agency. Anunoby holds a $19.9MM player option for 2024/25 that he’s “widely expected to decline,” Fischer writes.
One change in the new CBA that will take effect this summer is that teams are officially permitted to negotiate with their own free agents the first day after the NBA Finals conclude. The latest that could occur would be June 24, a couple days before the draft.
That theoretically gives incumbent teams an advantage, as teams can begin negotiating with outside free agents on June 30 at 5:00 pm CT. Everyone knows negotiations often begin weeks in advance though, which is why so many deals are reported shortly after 5:00 on June 30.
Anunoby retained his Bird rights when he was traded from Toronto to New York at the end of December. That will allow the Knicks to go over the salary cap to offer him a five-year deal up to his maximum salary for ’24/25. The 26-year-old just finished his seventh NBA season, so his max over five years is projected to be worth $245.34M. The most a rival team could offer him would be $181.89MM over four years.
While he is undoubtedly extremely valuable — including the playoffs, the Knicks went 26-6 in games he played and just 13-14 without him — Anunoby has also missed extended time due to injuries throughout his career. He has only averaged 52 regular season games over the past four seasons, including 50 this season after undergoing elbow surgery. A hamstring injury in Game 2 of the Eastern semifinals essentially ended his season, though he attempted to play in Game 7.
Do you guys think he’d sign for 5 million to the Mavericks :D
And LeBron for $1,00,000
I would love OG to stay but I’m worried. Best ability is availability.
Nope, he’s going to the Lakers on a minimum ala Steve Nash and Karl Malone!
(Obvious joke folks.
watch it laker fans will believe you as they claim D’lo will be traded for Curry.
I agree that this is probably a leverage play, but he would be an intriguing fit for OKC.
More than likely resigns with knicks for about $190 million for 5 years.
That would be my guess to, re-signing in NY for a few million dollars more than any other team can offer him.
Just my opinion (most good free agents will stay put)
Top 5 best unrestricted free agent (over 30% chance to change the teams)
Paul George (damage good, ask for $220 million contract)
OG (damage good, ask for $150 million contract)
DeRozan wants 3 years $120 million?
(age 35 this summer)
The Chicago Bulls reportedly offered DeMar DeRozan a two-year contract extension worth as much as $80 million
Malik Monk wants 4 years $120 million? (Compare to Fred VanVleet?)
Fred VanVleet signed a 3 year , $128,539,845 contract with the Houston Rockets
Tobias Harris last contract $180 million contract
It;s your turn to offer him a contact
OG and VanVleet were teammates for quite a few years.
OG contract compared to Fred VanVleet?
Fred VanVleet signed a 3 year , $128,539,845 contract with the Houston Rockets
Any dollar above 120M/4 years is an overpay. I read 40M… 40M is for second tier players, those between 7-8 to 14-15 in the top 30.
He’s a heck of a defender but still isn’t a top two way player in the league.
Many teams need to spend money to meet the team min requirements
Practical salary cap
Pistons $65 million
76ers $55 million
Jazz $38 million
Thunder $35 million
Gotta readjust to the new cap realities especially with the new rights deal looking pretty choice…
He’s 1000% getting more than 120 over 4 years
NYK FO, based on what it gave up to get him, has to re-sign him at whatever the market determines. Like with any salary, market price is what he can command and not what he’s worth.
Agreeing DXC and hoping Sixers don’t have chance to prove you correct with Paul george.
OG is the type of player every team needs…
Knicks just have to off him everything they can to keep him…
Offer a little less than the max 5 year deal and players and their agents look eslewhere unless they see a title with their current team…
OG just finding some leverage to get a good deal from NY I think.
Sixers are in the market for a 3 and D forward and he can use that to get every dollar he wants from NY. The Knicks have reportedly been listening to offers on Randle and with this season and the solid playoff run they just had they will be overs to retain him.
I know it’s likely to be really unpopular but I’d trade Randle for a bunch of solid role players on good contracts or maybe draft capital. Retain OG and then try replace Randle in FA with Tobias Harris. Think he’d actually be a really good fit. Can play the 4, space the floor, is alright defensively, not the best rebounder but Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson out in work on the glass.
Tobias would give you a decent 15-20 points per game on efficient scoring and right now has terrible value and you could snap him up really cheap.
pistons.
I know Knicks fans can’t comprehend that they aren’t a premier free agent destination, despite decades of evidence, but I just don’t see why OG would want to resign with the Knicks. People aren’t moving to New York, they are fleeing, in the millions. The perception that the Knicks are covered more by national media is also false, nobody ever talks about the Knicks.
So a sub par team with decades of mismanagement in a dying city, and no chance of winning a title anytime soon…
yeah your right they should sign with a team like the Pistons or Wizards or Magic or the Hornets or the Trail Blazers or Memphis or the Nets or Philly or the Raptors…..and some more but you get the picture
I’m not a fan of New York, but it’s just not a dying city lmao. That’s such an absurd comment. No chance of winning a title anytime soon? They were a couple baskets here and there away from beating the pacers, and if the Knicks are fully healthy they probably could at least put up a fight against the streaky Celtics.
Your comments are either delusional or just uninformed and I’m far from a Knicks fan
Go back to the Raptors
There was a bunch of crying emojis but they were obliterated (insert 5 crying emojis)
Knicks @ 5/185. Two good years out of that contract, three injury years that’s make the deal a bummer. Anything above $35M per is an overpay.
optimistic person who focuses on what you have — not what you don’t have. Positive thinking is linked to positive feelings which are, in turn, linked to positive action.
Glass half empty kind of guy ….. it’s basketball man. Wouldn’t you rather see them play well !!!!!!
I want them to sign him. I hope he’s not injured and I’m terribly wrong. He fits in perfectly with this team. But the reality is he needs to be available in order for success and that’s been proven in both situations. If we look at him historically, that chance exists.
Can’t see OG leaving. Can’t see him getting that much. At 26 yrs old. Not a bad idea to sign him 4-5 yrs. But not overpay. You want to win or make every penny like Bron. Plenty endorsement money in NY.
I like OG and Randle as part of front line. Like the tag team Center combo. Mitch and Hartenstein. Would like to see this for years. All top Knicks are hitting prime age. Randle the oldest at 29. Like to see this group grow. Find a 2, a (SG). Move Donte to bench, sixth man a shooter. It’s what I’d like to do.
@AL. Sounds like Booker or Mikal are a perfect fit as 2 SG.
OG should very well tour and listen to what teams have to say. He is just one of a bunch in NY.
He can have his own team in many places and the legit number two in others.
He’s not a number one or two. He is a complimentary player that will be paid well based on the level he performs in those desired areas – defense and threes. He’s not the guy who can carry a team or attract defenders off the main player.
His own team? Neither his handles nor his bag are good enough for him to be a two, let alone a one. Yes, other teams may offer him more usage than the Knicks can but I think it will come down to money and contention, as it so often does.
OG will hear offers but will stay.
If only knicks could swap Randle (with picks) for Markkanen.
