After being swept in the first round of the playoffs, head of basketball operations David Griffin said at the end of last month that the Pelicans are going to actively look to improve this summer. Those comments drew plenty of attention from rival executives, Michael Scotto told William Guillory of The Athletic on the latest HoopsHype podcast.
Scotto hears New Orleans plans to build around Zion Williamson and the Pelicans will be looking for “positional upgrades to improve their spacing” around the former No. 1 overall pick. Guillory confirms the team was pleased with Williamson’s progress — both on and off the court — particularly in the second half of the season.
Rival front offices view Brandon Ingram as the “most likely” Pelican to be dealt this offseason, per Scotto. As Scotto notes, Ingram is entering the final year of his contract, which will pay him $36MM in 2024/25.
According to Guillory, if Ingram were to hit unrestricted free agency in 2025, he would likely receive a max or near-max deal, which is what his camp would almost certainly be seeking in a potential extension. Still, trading Ingram after he was hampered by a knee injury and struggled mightily in the postseason isn’t ideal from a value perspective, so it’s challenging to come up with deals that make sense for New Orleans, Guillory observes.
Here’s more on the Pelicans from Scotto and Guillory:
- Aside from finances, one of the reasons the Pelicans may be open to moving Ingram is they want to get more playing time for a pair of high-volume floor spacers in Jordan Hawkins and Trey Murphy, according to Scotto. Hawkins struggled to crack the rotation in the second half of his rookie campaign due to the team’s backcourt depth and his defensive shortcomings, Guillory notes, but the team remains high on his upside.
- As for Murphy, he’ll be eligible for a rookie scale extension this summer, and Scotto believes the North Carolina native will be seeking a deal for at least $25MM annually, pointing to the contracts Devin Vassell and Jaden McDaniels signed last offseason as “starting points.” Guillory thinks the team would prefer to extend Murphy before next season begins rather than waiting until restricted free agency in 2025.
- Scotto expressed skepticism that CJ McCollum will be traded due to his leadership and professionalism, and Guillory has heard similarly, stating that the 32-year-old guard likely has more value to the Pelicans than rival teams. McCollum also set a franchise record for three-pointers made in ’23/24, Guillory notes, so he’s certainly capable of spacing the floor.
- There’s an expectation that Jonas Valanciunas will likely sign with a new team in free agency, per Scotto. Guillory says he’d be “pretty surprised” if the Lithuanian center returned to New Orleans after he was benched at times down the stretch of the season. While he wasn’t an ideal fit with Williamson, Valanciunas should have some value on the open market, Guillory adds, since he remains productive and has been quite durable throughout his career.
- Another free agent who could be on the move is Naji Marshall, with Guillory stating the team is “pretty much sold that he’s leaving” due to financial reasons. The 26-year-old wing shot a career-best 38.7% from three, is a solid defender, and is one of the few Pelicans who played well in the postseason, so he’ll be a name to watch in free agency, Guillory notes.
- While the Pelicans could decline their team option on Jose Alvarado to make him a restricted free agent, Guillory doesn’t think that will happen. Alvarado is “very motivated” to stay with New Orleans, but Guillory suggests the team will likely wait a year before deciding what to do with him.
- The Pelicans could also make some minor changes to their coaching staff, Scotto reports.
Marshall is a solid two way wing. NOP are very deep on the wings, and I can see where, with their other guys, some of whom are more spectacular, he could fall through the cracks.
He’d be a great fit on the NYK (as well as quite a few other teams), although they have their own contract situations to tend to. After which, they likely won’t have cap room or much of a MLE, if any.
Good for him when he gets his bag but Brandon Ingram is one of the few cases for a player of his talent where I wouldn’t give him a max. He’s been in the league for 8 seasons and never played more than 64 games. He has however far surpassed the guy that was taken in front of him in 2016 draft.
I think the asking price is going to be absurd. So I wouldn’t expect the Sixers to be in on Ingram past the initial tire kick.
Last year of his deal. Pelicans are unlikely to re-up him by all accounts. And he’s oft-injured.
As far as targets… He’s like a mid-tier target b/c I think they’ll want too much.
Building around a guy that will play 50 games per year and ultimately past his peak in 4 years…
How about dealing Ingram to Lakers?
Pelicans get DLo, Vincent and 3 Firsts
Lakers get Ingram
Three firsts for Ingram? Pass
Trade Ingram, CJ McCollum and Liddel for a e
PG and C the age of 24 or younger, maybe get one or two bad contracts to waive. Re-sign Marshall and Zeller and sign Ish Smith for veteran leadership (CJ has only been a PG in the NBA since he arrived in NOP. I trust ish smith to know more about being a PG and championship experience. Easy fix
I thought Ingram made more 3s
Quote your comment: Trade Ingram, CJ McCollum and Liddel for a PG and C the age of 24 or younger
Salary: Ingram + McCollum = $69 million
PG and C the age of 24 or younger
My question is
Who?
I said they would receive a bad contract or two I wrote. I will come back with some names of PG and C that would be good for NOP. They need a defensive C who can rebound and a good floor leader who can play defense
In Portland McCollum played off ball when Lillard was on the court but he was the PG when Lillard didn’t play. In fact he still plays off ball when Zion is running the offense.
Throw them in the Jarett Allen sweepstakes, JV looks cooked, Id set the bar at 1xMLE and still take the under on him despite a brutal C market.
He’s in namesake probably the biggest C changing jerseys as a free agent this summer. Rough market. good for Cle if they do ultimately put Allen out there
Ingram’s moving and I get the feeling its to a team that didn’t make the playoffs this year
Pelicans need to build around Zion especially after he managed to stay fit and active most the season and then really preformed in the playoffs. His biggest criticisms were his weight which affected his ability to stay on the floor and then can he preform on the biggest stage.
I wouldn’t say he’s done enough to complete quite the media but he’s definitely shown that he’s the guy they need to be building around if they want any shot at success.
I’d plan on gradually getting better and hoping Trey, Herb or Hawkins really takes that leap. Hopefully that aligns with CJs contract expiring and then having money to potentially spend in FA.
So for now I’d go;
Brandon Ingram and this years 1st for Nikola Vucevic, Alex Caruso and a pair of future 2nd’s
Pelicans should then aim to be this good defensive side with shooters around Zion on offence, which is similar to how Minnesota is constructed around ANT.
AC and Herb are two of the best defenders in the league, and offensively Zion is one of the hardest players to match up with. You’ve then added a centre in Vuce who can space the floor a little better and open up more room for Zion.
Minnesota have Gobert and McDaniels two elite defenders and then build an offence around ANT.
The TWolves are better defensively with KAT, Conley and NAW, but NOLA would be better offensively with more spacing.
It also gives you some flexibility moving forward cause if it doesn’t work out you still have your future first round picks and you’ve got healthy expiring contracts of CJ and Vuce.
I think long term wise you have a good amount of wings, it’s about settling on a centre and finding that all star level guard to play side kick to Zion. Shins going back to Minnesota they have ANT and next to him is KAT an all star big, you want the reverse with Zion and an all star level guard.
Donovan Mitchell would be a good target, Darius Garland is less of a scorer and more of a playmaker. Trae Young offers both scoring and playmaking but with poor defence.
Thats just how I’d approach it
