The Warriors unsuccessfully tried to convince the Lakers to consider trading LeBron James prior to February’s deadline. A subsequent report stated Golden State plans to pursue James and other stars this offseason.
One of Golden State’s most interesting trade chips is young forward Jonathan Kuminga, who had a breakout third season in 2023/24, particularly after he had a well-publicized meeting with Steve Kerr regarding his lack of playing time.
In his first 33 games, including 12 starts, Kuminga averaged 12.8 points and 4.1 rebounds on .506/.280/.688 shooting in 22.1 minutes per contest. In the 41 games (34 starts) following the meeting, he averaged 18.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.8 APG and 0.9 SPG on .542/.360/.787 shooting in 29.7 MPG.
Appearing on 95.7 The Game (Twitter link), ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne was asked, “To what level is Jonathan Kuminga on the table (in trades this summer)?”
“Not at all,” Shelburne replied. “… I think they’ll do everything they can to keep him. I don’t think they even want to talk about him.”
Shelburne pointed out that Golden State has other appealing assets, such as young players and future first-round picks. The Warriors also have ways to match salaries if they pursue a blockbuster deal.
Shelburne’s reporting aligns with what GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. said in February, when he referred to Kuminga as “virtually” untouchable after the trade deadline.
Kuminga will become eligible for a rookie scale extension in July. If he and the Warriors don’t agree to an extension by the start of the 2024/25 season, Kuminga will be eligible for restricted free agency during the summer of 2025.
For his part, Kuminga said in March he wants to be a “Warrior for life.”
So.. Klay goes to Orlando. I assume they’ll decline options on Ingles and Wagner which opens up enough cap space to sign him outright. So no S&T needed.
That leaves the Warriors with very little cap space to improve. They’ll be around 134M after cutting CP3.
Past Steph, Kuminga is it, no one else on the roster has the potential to carry the franchise. The only way they deal him is if they were getting a star player back. And I don’t see them doing it for a 36 yr old KD. So I’d be shocked if they moved him, but no one is untouchable. The right package can pry anyone away.
that has been the Warriors problem for the last 2 years no cap room to sign a player.
Klays not going to Orlando. He wants to stay a Warrior and they want to keep him. I expect the team offers him a slightly below market deal, and I doubt anyone goes far enough over that to blow them out of the water. He also gets far more money in sponsorship and endorsement deals with GSW and the high profile of the team.
CP3 can be guaranteed for any amount so they could lock in 10M of his salary to trade for a 10M player. I would look at some of the other NOP wings they may not be keeping and other teams about to get expensive that cant retain all the young talent they have.
On a star trade where Kuminga could be in play theyre just way to far behind what a team like OKC can offer. They wont get any tier 1 stars since there are a few teams with just far more assets despite the GSW having a standard full cabinet of tradable picks after this draft.
The problem there is Klay already turned down an overpay extension (2Y, 48M) from the Warriors.
He wanted to play it out, and probably hurt his stock. He can want more but if he doesnt have other offers much above GSW whats he gonna do?
Tried telling you about Kuminga ……
2way …… José………
Warriors can’t trade Kuminga he is the only young player with potential to be a future all star. As you can see from this years playoffs the young teams are the super teams now. Warriors must get younger and more athletic to compete in the future. Stop looking for players over 30.
It’s not about whats best for the future unfortunately. Looks like they will keep the core and trade away Kuminga/Moody to stay relavant to make money for everybody. The fact they signed Dray last offseason and even Kerr for 2 yrs say that they will go all in. :(
3 way trade proposal

Mavs get Wiggins
Pelicans get Kuminga, Kleber and Hardaway

Didnt he and Kerr have an issue at the FIBA last year, lol?
Don’t think warriors would even do kuminga for BI straight up.
Why would they lol
You must hate the warriors to think that trade is good for them. Ingram is a lot like Wiggins inconsistent from game to game.
Am I the only one here who has little trust in Kuminga. Sure, there is some upside but he is certainly not someone the warriors can rely on and I would be all for trading him if the return was a good package.
Nope you’re not the only one. I’m absolutely on board with that idea. If a trade can improve the team and he’s in it, you do it.
Unless its for a big center why trade him away. They played last year with almost no center production. Looney took a step back.
Huge mistake. He doesn’t have the star quality you need. If you can flip him with a package for a star you need to do it immediately
Oh god. So Warriors want to build around Steph for the last 2 good years of his career but view their only good trade chip as untouchable? I would be surprised but that FO seems to be committed to this level of delusion and has been for a while.
It sure seems like the Warriors are still in denial about where they are in relation to the rest of the league. Their commitment to doing whatever makes Steph happy is heading toward being like the declining Kobe era Lakers.
Dub’s get caught up in their own – Kuminga can develop into a Middleton or Siakam, though with less range.
The “Light Years” success was based on going massively over the Cap to sign Durant. Do it again, add LeBron (and son) and pay the taxes. It’s that or miss the Playoffs again…
The Durant signing was made possible by the fluke of a one time large upward adjustment in the NBA Cap that allowed the Warriors to get under the cap enough to sign Durant. It was not done by simply going massively over the Cap. You can not do that when signing a free agent from another team. So, no, they can not do that to sign LeBron or any other big salary free agent.
Sure, over simplified it to be brief, my apologies. Yes the Dub’s would have to move pieces around to accommodate Durant and/or LeBron; and something like that needs to be done. They missed the playoffs this year and would likely again next year if they just run it back…
