While Anthony Edwards had been the Timberwolves‘ engine and leading scorer during their 2024 playoff run, it was the team’s other former No. 1 overall pick – Karl-Anthony Towns – who keyed Sunday’s 20-point comeback in Denver and put up the biggest stat line of the night (23 points, 12 rebounds, and a pair of steals).
As Jim Souhan of The Star Tribune writes, Towns has long been “a symbol of Wolves underachievement, fairly or not,” so it’s fitting that his contributions were crucial in getting the team past the defending champions and into the Western Conference finals.
“I couldn’t be more happy and proud of him,” head coach Chris Finch said of Towns after the victory. “Because I think he’s faced a lot of unfair criticism when it comes to the postseason. The more you go through these things, the more at peace you are … KAT was really special, especially in the second half. I think you see how at peace and happy he is.”
“I’ve been here nine years, talked about wanting to win and do something special here for the organization,” Towns said, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. “All of the failures and all the things that materialized and happened, the disappointment that comes with it led to this moment.”
Edwards, meanwhile, put up a solid line of 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, but he made just 6-of-24 shots from the floor. He expressed appreciation after the win that Towns and the other six Wolves players who saw action in Sunday’s Game 7 helped make up for his poor shooting night.
“It was tough, man, because I couldn’t find myself, my rhythm tonight,” Edwards said, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “So, I just had to trust my teammates. … I just had to make the right plays throughout the rest of the game. I did that, and my teammates made shots. Big shoutout to those guys.”
Here’s more on the Wolves, who are headed to the Western Conference finals for just the second time in franchise history:
- Like Towns, Rudy Gobert has faced criticism over the years for his lack of playoff success, most recently after Game 5 when Nikola Jokic had a 40-point game and made 8-of-9 shots with Gobert as his primary defender. However, as McMenamin writes, Gobert scored eight of his 13 points on Sunday in the fourth quarter, including an improbable turnaround fadeaway with the shot clock running down (video link). He also led a stifling defensive effort that saw Denver score just 37 points on 35.9% shooting in the second half. As Sam Amick of The Athletic points out, the Wolves are +111 in the playoffs with Gobert on the court, which is the best mark of any player on the roster.
- Jaden McDaniels matched Towns with a team-high 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting in Game 7 and earned major praise from Edwards for the role he has played so far in the postseason. “Jaden McDaniels was the MVP of the last two series,” Edwards told reporters (Twitter video link via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype). McDaniels signed a five-year extension with Minnesota last fall — it will go into effect this July, bumping his salary from $3.9MM to $22.6MM.
- Edwards also lauded Finch for the role he has played in the Wolves’ success this season and this spring, per Amick. “It starts with our head coach — Coach Finch,” Edwards said. “He comes in every day, comes to work, gets there early. He’s thinking of ways to get me and KAT open looks. He’s thinking of ways to get Mike (Conley) and Rudy open looks. He’s thinking of ways to get Jaden involved. He’s trying to keep Naz (Reid) in it to get him involved. He’s just a great coach. And he don’t sugarcoat anything with anybody. If KAT’s f—in’ up, he’s going to get on KAT. If I’m f—in’ up, he’s going to get on me. If Rudy f—in’ up, he’s going to get on anybody that’s messing up throughout the game, and I think that’s what makes him the best coach in the NBA, to me.”
- The Timberwolves ownership battle, which is headed to arbitration, has taken a back seat during the team’s playoff run. “Only dysfunctional ownership can break up this team,” one team executive told ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link).
Ant was the best thing that could happen to Towns. Towns has always been a very talented and good basketball player, but he wasn’t a franchise leader. Nothing wrong with that. 95+% of NBA players are not.
But Edwards is one of those players who really thrives in the spotlight and isn’t afraid to be No. 1. Now Towns can concentrate on what he’s best at: playing basketball. Without the “can he lead a franchise to a championship?” talk.
Collecting a max contract …… that’s what he’s best at.
KAT has been a detriment to this team for the better part of a decade. The fact he had a decent game last night doesn’t make up for 9 years of a lack of effort, refusal to play inside, refusal to play defense, and his constant narcissistic crying to refs. Nowhere does the article mention how Gobert has to hold KATs hand every possession.
If you mean his injury history has meant he hasn’t been able to contribute his All-star efforts to the team, particularly for the 3 years he missed more than 30 facts, can’t argue with that
Would also like to see him play inside more. Pleased, though, that he can shoot outside to compensate or not go inside cuz he doesn’t have to, especially since going inside results in lots of foul trouble
Singling KAT out in this league for ref whining doesn’t resonate. Do you perceive him as whinier than other #2 stars on the other teams?
DPOY gonna hold most players’ hands, maybe not Jaden’s or NAW’s as much as others
“Detriment” is such an obviously untrue description it almost isn’t even worth addressing, but I’ll bite. Throughout those 9 years he’s been no worse than the third best player at any one time. In the last 7 or so years, he’s been the best or second best player every year.
If you want to moan about his “lack of effort” and all the other junk, fine, but saying he’s been a “detriment to the team” for 9 years is categorically false.
T-wolves are in a win now mode by going all in on their stars contracts. They have a 3 year window open to be champs so take advantage of their best shot this year.
For sure a 3 year window, but that could easily be extended by drafting well, considering it doesn’t look like Ant or KAT want to go anywhere.
T-Wolves aren’t a joke anymore, they must be the favorites to win all, even over Boston. Good win for Minnesota I would not liked seeing Denver winning again.
I mean it would hilarious if Boston won it against the Wolves…
But it’s good to see new winners in the sport…
If KAT wins a title does he go to the hall of fame? Discuss…
For them to win this year almost certainly means he has to be their 2nd best player throughout the rest of the run, so given his prior regular season resume I would say yes. Hall is easy to make
Shouldn’t be at this point, but it’s the NBA.
MLB does the HOF better than any league. It should be almost impossible.
NBA is better at judging than the NFL. It loses its meaning when so many get in.
You have this wrong. MLB is the hardest to get in, followed by football, and the NBA lets everyone who ever touched a ball in. It means literally nothing.
I’m a Celtics fan, Timberwolves are real and can win the whole thing. Wolves defense can pressure Brown into turnovers, like the Heat did last year, can pressure Tatum to rush shots, if Porzingis doesn’t return in regular season form , Celtics are in trouble. Hey, Celtics have to get through Pacers first… If they get through Pacers, Pacers will run them ragged at the pace they play…
Celtics aren’t that good. The East is a joke and the Celtics had a crazy easy schedule.
Playoff teams in the east who had a lower SOS than Boston include Cleveland, Miami, Orlando, and Philadelphia.
Celtics had one of those better on paper years… East just isn’t competitive outside of the top 4… West is all the way down to 11…
Mavs and Wolves should be favourites if Porzingis isn’t healthy or playing at his level…
“Only dysfunctional ownership can break up this team”
Well, given that the Wolves are owned by Glen Taylor, that’s a distinct possibility. Dysfunctional ownership doesn’t get much more obvious than that guy.
Whoever the owner is just needs to pay the tax and stay the hell out of the way for the time being. Ironically, for as terrible as he’s been, Taylor may be the better bet to make that happen. I’m not sold on Lowe and A-Roid being able to provide that type of support over an extended period.
The team is not losing money, the operate at a profit, so the owners wealth doesn’t really matter.
Taylor’s greed knows no bounds…
He’ll find a way to screw this up if he’s allowed to…
