Making his first appearance in five-plus weeks due to a strained right calf he sustained in the first round, big man Kristaps Porzingis gave the Celtics a major spark off the bench in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, writes Tim Bontemps of ESPN.
The 28-year-old finished with 20 points (on 8-of-13 shooting), six rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes. Boston was plus-13 when he was on the court in the 18-point victory.
“Kristaps had a monster game for us,” Jaylen Brown said. “Just his presence shooting the ball and then him being able to attack those switches and mismatches, he made ’em pay every time, and that’s what we need going forward in the series.”
According to Bontemps, Porzingis praised Boston’s crowd for getting his adrenaline flowing in just the second game of his career as a reserve.
“Tonight was an affirmation to myself that I’m pretty good (physically), you know?” Porzingis said. “Maybe I’m not perfect, but I’m pretty good and I can play like this and I can definitely add to this team.”
Here’s more on the Celtics, who now hold a 1-0 lead on the Mavericks:
- Porzingis’ coach and other teammates raved about his performance as well, per Jay King of The Athletic. “He’s a matchup nightmare,” Derrick White said. “Even when you play good defense, he doesn’t see you. It’s been unreal just watching him all year. Then defensively, he uses his size well, just impacts the games in so many different ways. He changes us and he makes us a better team.”
- Brown provided a steadying influence for the Celtics when the Mavs went on a third-quarter run, as Jared Weiss of The Athletic writes. At one point, Boston’s lead was cut from 29 points to eight. “We just said, just breathe. The game is starting now. Just breathe,” Brown said. “This is a moment where our experience shines through. Just breathe, just keep playing basketball.” The three-time All-Star made a major impact on both ends of the court, finishing with 22 points (on 7-of-12 shooting), six rebounds, three steals and three blocks in 37 minutes.
- Steve Buckley of The Athletic lays out why he believes head coach Joe Mazzulla deserves credit for how the Celtics responded following a timeout when the third-quarter lead was down to eight points. Boston immediately went on a 14-0 run after the break in action. Mazzulla was often criticized last season for the ways in which he used his timeouts, Buckley notes.
- Former Celtics guard Kyrie Irving, who is now a Maverick, said he thought Boston’s crowd “would be a little louder” following the Game 1 loss, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic. Irving knows the jeers will continue anytime he’s in Boston, but he’s focused on what he can control on the court. “But again, the energy has to be focused towards the game,” Irving said. “I felt like I had a lot of great looks. They hit (the) back rim or were just a little left or right. Just got to stay confident and stay poised throughout this, man. This is the best time of the year to be playing. There’s only two teams left. Let’s put it in perspective. The environment is going to be what it is but my focus is on our game plan and making sure my guys feel confident and I feel confident and continue to shoot great shots.” Irving finished with just 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting in 37 minutes.
- ESPN insiders Tim Bontemps, Marc Spears and Kevin Pelton provide their takeaways from Game 1.
Kyrie sucks ……. Kyrie
Awwwhhh !!!!
That’s a nice 21 mins KP gave Celts.
Shooting over Jones and Luka all night was easy pickings for the unicorn.
I still pick Mavs at 7
Mavs 4
Celtics 3
Celts in 5, 6 at most
Why?
Mavs prioritized stopping Tatum & he was an extremely willing/smart passer all game long. Boston played really smart, shot well & stayed composed when Dallas made their surge in the 3rd. They played like champs last night but ofc same thing was true in gm1 vs Ws a couple yrs ago. Jaylen Brown stamping himself as an all-time great rn
Yep, Jaylen Brown looked like he had fresh legs last night & … he keeps getting better & better! Should have definitely been in the top 30 this season! As for Sam Hauser he has a bad, badly outdated tag. Announcers say other teams search him out & I guess they do but that’s their problem. Hauser, although he doesn’t block shots like a number of Celtics, is a very good defender as he again showed last night. Go Celtics!
Sam Hauser is definitely one of the weakest defenders in the league & this is fairly obvious to see. Lol why would you even bring Hauser’s defense up tho? Who mentioned him?
Now, I’m not saying the series is over. Dallas is a dangerous team.
With that said, it’s been interesting to me how so many forgot how different Boston is with Porzingis. In Tatum. Brown, White, Holiday, and Porzingis the Celtics have 5 guys who are amongst the top 50 in the NBA.
They were beasts all year. With KP and Holiday, this is definitely not the same old Celtics of old.
Cs prob gonna win the title & def have a great team headlined by 2 great players but idk about all 5 of those guys being top50. I might have Jrue & KP in there but they’d both be borderline & as much as I love DWhite (esp defensively), there’s a bunch of guards that are better than him. Cs def have some really talented guys but it’s really how they play as a unit that sets them apart. Their system is obv very Tatum/Brown centric but those 2 guys are way more team-1st than they used to be. And the system is just set up really well to make teams pay for keying on the 2 stars. All that being said, I can guarantee they’ll have a tougher road through the postseason next yr than they had to face this yr.
Who cares. They’re about to get THIS ring lickety split
The present matters but the past & the future also matter.
Jrue for sure. Future HOFer
With so much new young talent coming into the NBA each year now, yes, the Celtics need to grab the gold ring this year!
White is a top 75…
Horford is capable of a top 50 level game here and there as well…
Celtics are the closest to a Super team the NBA has right now…
Kyrie had an awful game overall, other than that one shot he made near the bucket in the first quarter that had my jaw on the ground. If he plays normally, this will be a close series. I can still see Luka and Kyrie assessing what happened in game 1 and making the best adjustments. Kyrie has to score for this team to win, and he went 6-19, if he went 12-19 it would have been a more interesting game.
I would also like to see Dallas try and go small like GSW did vs Boston in 2022.
Like I said…going big points wise for Tatum and Brown isn’t necessary for Boston to get wins. Luka and Kyrie both need big scoring games for Dallas. The other guys best start knocking down good looks soon.
Finals are all about adjustments and coaching. Remember Boston won game 1 vs GSW and the Warriors adjusted. Now JK needs to look at what didn’t work and adjust to Boston. Shutting down Tatum is the not the key because he is such a good distributer of the ball. You need to shut down the others.
Yes, of course it’s not over. Anything could happen, someone could go down for the series. If Boston stay healthy, mavs need to improve alot, all of them. Luka one assist tells a story. Shutting down the others is tough when five guys can spread the floor.
Celtics team D. Makes KP look good.
He’s just a right fit in Boston. He’s gotta be loving his resurgence. And trip to Finals. Gotta give him his respect. Team game always wins.
The Boston stars just fill their roles perfectly…
They could all aim for 40 a night… But by playing a team game they are so much more deadly…
Coach Joe really got them playing for each other…
Man the Mavs looked like had a shot in the 3rd quarter. Crazy that the back to back travel calls on Dallas seemed to completely derail them. Thinking about fundamentals during the possession won’t fly in the Finals. Especially against Boston.
Kidd got out coached and Kyrie out played…
Luka was magical but not enough against the only team in the NBA that has a true claim to 4 All Star players… Jrue still has it… And Horford can throw in a throw back performance or 2 during a series…
Mavs need to play Hardy more, he was on a different level to the rest of the team besides Luka…
Boston in 6…
Dallas is in great shape they always lose game one and win game two.
Celtics are too loaded. It’s interesting though cause when warriors were loaded most fans cried. Because it’s celtics who are loaded they back them because most fans dislike Kyrie and Luka. Ain’t that something.
The only fans who dislike Doncic are Hawks fans. Atlanta should have had him instead of Young.
