Zaccharie Risacher could be the first selection in this year’s draft, but most American fans aren’t familiar with the French forward’s game. Risacher sought to clear up some of the mystery in a Zoom session with the media this week, writes Chase Hughes of Monumental Sports.
The 19-year-old plays for JL Bourg in the LNB Pro A league, where he impressed scouts with his soft shooting touch and 6’8″ frame. He’s a career 40.7% three-point shooter during his three-year career in France and connected at 56.1% from beyond the arc in this year’s playoffs, often with NBA scouts and executives in attendance.
“I think my best skill is probably my shooting ability. I’m really comfortable with it and I know it’s not perfect, I still got a lot of work to do. But that’s the part of my game I feel like is my best skill that I have,” Risacher told reporters. “And the part of my game that I need to work on is probably my dribbling ability, the way to handle contact with dribbling. But I know I can do it. I will say that’s the next step.”
Hughes notes that Risacher is projected to go to Atlanta with the No. 1 pick in the latest mock drafts from Yahoo Sports, ESPN and The Ringer. He’s listed as the second selection by The Athletic and Bleacher Report.
Risacher mentioned Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Jayson Tatum and Ray Allen as players he studied while developing his game. He’s also considered to be a high-level defender, so whoever drafts him won’t be getting a one-dimensional player.
“I take pleasure in [impacting] both sides of the court. [I like] defending small guards, big guards, big men,” Risacher said. “I think that’s something that I can like translate in the NBA.”
There’s more draft news to pass along:
- G League Ignite forward Matas Buzelis is under consideration by teams in the top five, sources tell Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report. Wasserman has Buzelis going to San Antonio at No. 4 in his latest mock draft, noting that the team should be able to fill its need for a point guard with the eighth pick. He hears the Spurs are interested in Providence guard Devin Carter, who may get the edge over Nikola Topic because of Topic’s ACL injury.
- Wasserman also hears that French forward Tidjane Salaun, who has been rising up draft boards, will hold a pre-draft workout with the Thunder, who have the No. 12 pick. That’s in addition to sessions with teams in the top 10 such as the Spurs, Pistons and Trail Blazers.
- Following a report that Carter has received a promise from a team in the lottery, Rylan Stiles speculates in a Sports Illustrated article about which club might have given that promise, writing that the Grizzlies and Thunder both have incentives to add Carter.
Risacher looks a lot like a French version of Dre Hunter. Definitely a good player but obv we already got one of those. He makes more sense for DC than Atl. Looking more & more obv that we’re gonna trade this pick but I can’t really see anyone trading up to draft Risacher. Best case scenario for him would be Sarr going 1st & DC grabbing him 2nd. Hawks should prioritize grabbing Isaiah Collier from this draft tho.
I’d say that’s a pretty good comparison from the info I’ve read but maybe Zach has more potential to add a handle and be a bigger part of the offence.
However disagree with the rest of what your saying, Collier is just a downhill point guard that can’t shoot well and isn’t a great passer either. I think Sarr is who ATL takes 1st overall and then Capela is gone.
I would strongly advise you to watch these guys play yourself instead of just reading what someone else thinks about them. This is definitely where you’ve got the wrong idea about Isaiah Collier. He was actually pretty elite as a catch & shoot 3pt shooter in this, his freshman season. And historically college freshman pgs are subpar shooters anyway. Saying Collier can’t shoot is basically a confession that you don’t know much about his game. As far as him not being a great passer I’m not sure what you’re talking about lol he’s definitely a great passer. Maybe not Magic Johnson level great but he projects to be as good or better passer than a guy like Dejounte Murray who is an all-star level NBA pg.
But what I’ve yet to see is anyone explain what sense it makes to trade away Clint & draft Sarr. Hawks are obv in win now mode & both of our 5s (Clint & Onyeka) are currently better than Sarr. Why would we intentionally make our team worse? Our big man duo has been great over the past few seasons (when healthy) & has only been getting better with the development of Onyeka. With both guys signed to team friendly deals & Clint playing on the last yr if his deal why would we move one of them? We’re gonna get a bigger return for trading Trae. We have an in house replacement for Trae. Subtracting Trae from our team automatically improves our team defense. Just seems like anybody who’s paying attention and using logic should understand how obvious it is for the Hawks to trade Trae, keep Clint & trade down in the draft.
DFox, Melo Ball, TMaxey, Ja Morant, Jrue, IQuickley, DRose, Cason Wallace, Cam Thomas, Dejounte, Nembhard & more all shot the 3 at the same efficiency (or much worse) as Collier as college freshmen. All have become starter level NBA guards with most of them becoming elite level NBA guards
If these 4 teams were added to the NCAA tourney a few months ago, which of them would have had the best chance of making it to the Final Four…
G-League Ignite (rip)- RHolland, Buzelis, Tyler Smith etc
u18 Team USA currently in the FIBA Americup- Darius Acuff, Trey McKenney, Danny Jacobsen etc
City Reapers (OTE back2back champs)- Jahki Howard, Jaeden Mustaf, Bryson Tiller etc
Perth Wildcats (NBL)- Alex Sarr, Jordan Usher, Bryce Cotton etc

Carter would fit in really nice with Cha at 6, he might not be the 6th best player but its hard to ignore the fit in- between LaMelo and Miller

3. Lakers trade Dlo and pick 17 for Wendell Carter Jr and Cole Anthony
Winners
Spurs with Risacher failing and now the young French double.
Nets manage to trade into the draft and get the better player in the deal.
Losers
Rockets couldn’t trade out of 3 when they wanted a big name, although Reed is a good kid.
Playoff teams late in the draft weren’t able to flip their firsts for role players in a weak draft.
I see the Sixers drafting Edney due to the Nick Nurse connection that is a deep connection and Nurse really likes him. I can see it happening.
The Thunder can definitely get a Center in the draft (12). But would it be better. To get one who is ready now. Just sign one in FA (IHart). Or trade for one.
Clingan or Ware can fit this team. But as rookies. You may be asking too much. You draft one and sign Plumlee. Give a chance for growth. Plumlee was solid last yr. Wo t be as expensive as IHart. With Clingan or Ware. They can compete at C. They can go big with Chet.
This might be the worst draft class as of right now in the last 15 years, there’s no one to get excited about watching, Atlanta might as well give their pick away because they won’t be drafting a legitimate #1 star
