The Kings are expected to return to the trade market this offseason with the same assets they offered Toronto for Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby earlier in 2023/24, writes Matt Moore of ActionNetwork.com: Harrison Barnes, Kevin Huerter, and draft compensation.
While Sacramento will do its best to re-sign Malik Monk, the team only holds his Early Bird rights and will be limited to offering him up to $78MM over four years. If Monk ends up getting away, the Kings will likely feel some additional pressure to make a trade to upgrade its rotation — and will have some additional financial flexibility to add salary.
The Kings will likely circle back to the Wizards to discuss Kyle Kuzma, according to Moore, who says Sacramento has also talked to the Bulls about Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso. LaVine, whose price tag is believed to be lower now than it ever has been, could become a more attractive target if Monk departs, Moore adds.
Here are a few more items of interest from Moore’s latest look at free agency and the trade market:
- The Sixers are expected to have interest in forward Miles Bridges in free agency, according to Moore. Philadelphia would have more than enough cap room to make a competitive offer for Bridges, especially if it misses out on its top targets. Moore reports that the Hornets are “known to be” fans of Bulls restricted free agent Patrick Williams, so he could be a target for Charlotte if the team loses Bridges.
- Veteran point guard Tyus Jones, who was a full-time starter this past season for the Wizards, is expected to seek a deal worth north of $15MM annually, two sources tell Moore. Jones is the No. 15 free agent on our top-50 list.
- There’s an expectation that the Grizzlies will look to add multiple centers this summer, Moore writes, noting that Nets big man Day’Ron Sharpe is a name to watch for Memphis. A Grizzlies offer for Sharpe could consist of a second-round pick and one of their bench wings, Moore adds.
- The Grizzlies are also among the teams that have expressed interest in Hawks center Clint Capela, along with the Wizards, Pelicans, and Bulls, Moore says.
- The free agent market for Heat forward Haywood Highsmith is expected to start around the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.2MM), two team cap strategists tell Moore.
Early bird right = lose players?
Imo
3 players will have new homes
Monk
Hartenstein
Derrick Jones
F the EBR?
Yes
Kings should take Lavine and Caruso
Keep big 3
Fox
Son Sabas
Murray
Anything else Bulls want
As a bulls fan, I’d love if they did. Lavine and AC for Barnes, huerter, and a pick?
If bulls could finesse their way into Keon Ellis I would love that, think he’s gonna be rly solid. He and ayo would be a defensive menace tag team. But it’s the bulls so they will not be competent enough in trade negotiations to pull that off.
Kings pull the trigger if they’re getting both AC and Lavine for Barnes Huerter and a pick. Im sure they’d be willing to toss another pick in there as well.
Don’t love the move but if Monk walks then they’re kind of out of options.
Agreed, trust me I’m aware betting on Zach is a rough proposition lol but kings need to take a risk. They need a jolt and AC will definitely provide one, ideal version of Zach would too.
And if I’m the bulls, Barnes huerter and 2 picks is a great compensation for dumping Lavines negative value contract, and while I would miss AC a lot, he’s probably not sticking around long term anyways, so would be a solid deal for both sides imo. Balancing the roster positionally and finally getting an actual forward in Barnes would be nice
The kings would have to add more salary. That along with Sasha and Duarte works. Still can’t believe Lavine is making that much.
Ellis isn’t going anywhere, but that would create a logjam at the 2 for the kings. Caruso or Ellis would have to come off the bench, is Lavine capable of being a starting 3 with the kings as bad as their d had been? I think a third team would have to be involved
Why do you envision a third team being involved (as far as who is being dumped there)?
Lavines defense is just atrocious on many levels. Despite his incredible offensive athleticism , he’s lead-footed on defense, kind of similar to prime Russ in that respect (but def worse than Russ was). He also has horrible positional awareness, constantly gets lost and generally seems confused. Not to mention a lack of strength so he can’t switch up. That combined with the aforementioned inability to keep up with guards and his propensity for allowing blowbys makes his defense a resounding negative.
So, I guess he could play the 3 on defense, but you’d better be starting 2 elite defensive guards, which I’m unsure of bc I don’t have a good feel for Foxs defense. He is going to get killed on switches though. Tbh I think he’s easier to hide as a 2 on defense but if the kings are looking for an offensive jolt, lavine certainly provides that dynamism. And like you mentioned monk is almost def gone, kings won’t be able to pay him what Philly or Orlando can.
If I’m Landry I’m not trading Clint no matter what. Onyeka is a beast but he’s not the rebounder that Clint is (no one is except AD, Domas & Drummond) & he’s not as experienced or as savvy defensively either. Having both those guys is obv better than one & we can afford them both as they’re both a tad underpaid compared to their talent/production. I can clearly see why other teams would want him badly but we have zero incentive to trade him unless we’re getting an all-star level guy in return. Whatever we could get for trading Clint, we’ll get more for trading Trae. Even if we draft Sarr (which is an idea I’m slightly warming too), he can just play the 4 next season. Having a frontline of Jalen Johnson, Alex Sarr, Clint Capela & Onyeka Okongwu would be sorta crazy
You’d go from a bad 3 point shooting team to the worst …
I like Clippers and Knicks
Yes
76ers should target young and healthy players, not damaged good such as George and OG
Why don’t teams sign every player to at least three year deals with a team option? Even if you pay more up front you don’t have to worry about Bird rights.
As a Sixers fan I wouldn’t mind Miles Bridges as the fallback option.
He fits the timeline better, he slots in as a third option easier, good versatility between SF and PF. He is quite similar to Tobias Harris in alot of ways and the off the court issues obviously bring some doubt, it’s not like Philly is a soft city either and I’m sure that if he goes looking for trouble he would find it. So you’d have to be aware of what your signing up to with him but in terms of fall back options there not a hell of a lot out there and the Sixers are clearly in “All in” mode
If the Sixers strike out on PG13, and Mikal Bridges and Markkanen are not an option… I would kick the tires on Kuzma. Contract is defending I believe, could make sense for them. Would be better than dropping 40M on OG.
