After issuing a candid statement on the one-for-one swap of Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso within a press release, Thunder general manager Sam Presti spoke to reporters on Friday to further explain the move.
“The opportunity to add Caruso is really unique,” Presti said, per The Oklahoman’s Justin Martinez. “Fortunately, everything lined up. If we couldn’t get the return that we wanted or the player that we wanted, we’d be in a different situation. But it worked out for everybody.”
Presti added that he’s sure Giddey would have returned and played in a bench role if the opportunity to acquire Caruso didn’t pan out. Although he praised Giddey, it was clear Presti was excited about the opportunity to add one of the league’s top guard defenders in Caruso.
“People often times look at height when they talk about wing players,” Presti said. “We look at effectiveness. His effectiveness on bigger wing players is extraordinary. … We’d rather someone who’s effective against those players than is ineffective but as tall.”
Caruso will join a Thunder team that ranked toward the middle of the pack in points allowed but registered a top-four defensive rating and ranked first in steals and blocks.
“The data on him is extremely high class,” Presti said. “It’s just another versatile player. … It’s all about the team [for Caruso]. It’s all about the technicalities and the curiosity about his own game and what it is he does well. He’s a colossal competitor, and we want to have as many of those guys as we can in the building.”
We have more from the Northwest Division:
- Caruso, who played for the Oklahoma City Blue from 2016-17 under coach Mark Daigneault, is returning to Oklahoma City at the right time, Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman writes in a subscriber-only piece. Caruso averaged 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks last season while shooting 40.8% from three. He’ll look to help a Thunder team that finished first in the Western Conference this season get over the hump in the postseason.
- The Jazz have an opportunity to bolster their roster with the Nos. 10, 29 and 32 picks in the 2024 draft, and they need to consider prospects who can shoot, defend or have a high feel for the game, Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune writes. In Larsen’s view, Utah should aim to take Colorado’s Cody Williams at No. 10, Kansas’s Johnny Furphy at No. 29 and Virginia’s Ryan Dunn at No. 32, if possible.
- The Nuggets, who hold the No. 28 pick in Wednesday’s draft, are hosting G League Ignite forward Tyler Smith for a workout on Friday, Tony Jones of The Athletic tweets. The 6’11” big man averaged 13.7 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 36.0% from three on 3.7 attempts last season.
Glad Presti mentioned size of a wing. Giddey had great size and physical tools. The bad thing is he had no physicality to him. He played too small.
Caruso is smaller but much tougher. He has the championship appearance though a bubble.
Bulls won this trade by a mile. All available respects to AC,he is a legend, but Giddey brings all team players on the court involvement and the future with his age to build on for Bulls.People saying you didn’t get picks in this trade are funny, they get 6th pick with NBA experience and upside.Hopefully Giddey will take this opportunity seriously, you don’t get many chances in NBA
I wouldn’t say the Bulls won this by a mile. A lot of what Caruso brings doesn’t show up in a box score or on the stat sheet. On paper yeah Giddey probably looks like the better player (stats are a little better, former 1st rounder, still young) but Caruso is going to contribute more to a win now/contender team. He’s exactly the type of player every contender wants to round out their roster—decent size, good shooting, good defense, and willing to play the role player role.
Giddey has more upside but there’s a reason why he’s been relegated to 6th man and gets benched during the playoffs. Part of it is SGA’s emergence but Giddey reminds me a lot of Evan Turner. Does a little bit of everything on offense but his below average 3p shooting caps his ceiling. Chicago can afford to roll the dice on him because they’re still without a true PG with Lonzo still out—imo White is more of a combo scoring guard than a true PG type. But the Bulls current roster is also an awkward fit for Giddey, especially if they hope or plan to bring DeRozan back. Realistically, the Bulls should have been blown it up 1-2 years ago and not resign LaVine or Vucevic. Those two deals are going to hamstring them and they’re going to have to take uninspiring returns for both just to have a chance at getting out from those contracts. Giddey will get a chance to shine this year but it also might wind up as empty stats.
It is a win for both players.
OKC gets hopefully their version of a Derrick White.
Bulls get a true playmaking PG as Ball is not likely to play again or handle significant role in career.
Bulls just have Billy Dufus in charge, but Giddey should be a primary handler with Coby White.
I’d say OKC won the trade by a mile, Giddey lost his starting role last season plus is a s offender. Caruso is awesome on both sides of the ball. Giddey’s defense is weak.
He is not a sex offender…age difference of 2 years… be smarter
Nah OKC and Giddey won…
They moved on from a player whose skills were made redundant by many other players on the Thunder…
Caruso fills a lot of holes they needed filled…
Giddey was facing life as a bench player or bench warmer in OKC… Now he gets a chance to shine in Chicago as one of their lone play makers if Lonzo isn’t healthy…
Next summer
Caruso is unrestricted FA and Giddey is restricted
Unrestricted need more money
Thunder is more transparent than Lakers
Ham is gone. What is the main reason?
AC is guarding 1-5 positions,he is guarding and taking charges on bigger bodies, thats why he is getting injured often and has limited availability on the court.Bulls prefer availability, versatility. The way Giddey play is similar to Jokic and Doncic, they do not jump, they not doing crazy stunts, thats why they last longer.Tell me who is better PG than Giddey at his age (22) now, maybe just Haliburton. You can improve shooting and defense, but you can’t learn court vision,it’s a talent.A+++ for Bulls, hopefully this move will work out
Jokic and Luka are superior shooters to Giddey. He has passing skills possibility on the level but he is not a scoring threat like them at all.
Haliburton, Maxey, Ja, Garland and Lamelo are all better pgs/players that are in the age range.
Giddey at his best so far has been a taller Rubio with worse defence…
He’s someone teams will dare to shoot it…
Giddey won’t be a top 5 PG in the weak East… Let alone be able to sniff the shorts of Doncic or Jokic…
In 4 years he might be something closer to what you describe… But as of now… He’s a bench player for contenders…
Jazz should take Edey at 29
Short term Thunder win. They get an actual bench piece with defense who’s good at his role and fits better next to SGA Williams Holgrem
Long term think Bulls win. They get an immediate starting PG and let him be a main option. Have control over him. Caruso is a pending UFA.
Giddey has improved his shooting every yr (3) .475 FG%, .34% (3PT), 81% FT.
Those are respectable. He hasn’t even peaked yet. He gets all stats closer to triple doubles. He’s a true PG with size and game. He’s big like Haliburton. Has great vision. Bulls just let him play. Get comfortable at point. Imo he’s a good match with White. And after being traded. I know he wants to show.
Caruso is great piece for them. Bulls just got their starting PG for next 10 yrs. I believe in Josh.
