The Wizards could have interest in Josh Giddey if the Thunder decide to move him this summer, Sam Vecenie of The Athletic suggests on his Game Theory Podcast (hat tip to Rylan Stiles of Inside the Thunder). Vecenie notes that Washington general manager Will Dawkins, a former Oklahoma City executive, was heavily involved in the process when the Thunder drafted Giddey with the sixth pick in 2021.
Vecenie doesn’t place a high price tag on Giddey, theorizing that OKC could get the Wizards’ No. 26 pick and a future second-rounder in return: “That feels like it is about the price point, to be honest with you, for where Giddey is right now and where the playoffs ended with him, this feels like a reasonable offer for Giddey.”
The third-year swingman has been a starter since his rookie season, but he was ineffective in the second-round series against Dallas. Giddey averaged just 12.6 minutes per game and connected at 43.2% from the field and 18.8% from three-point range as the Mavericks dared him to shoot. Giddey will be extension-eligible this summer, but the Thunder may opt to trade him rather than committing to another long-term salary with so much young talent on the roster.
There’s more from the Northwest Division:
- During an appearance on the Jim Rome show, Nuggets coach Michael Malone said there have been discussions about trading the 28th pick (video link from Harrison Wind of DNVR Sports). Malone responded, “You can never have enough shooting” when asked about team needs, and although he said Denver has the league’s best starting five, he expressed concern about that group being overworked again.
- Bennett Durando of The Denver Post offers his insight into players the Nuggets are projected to take in various mock drafts if they hold onto their first-round pick. ESPN and Yahoo Sports both have Denver selecting Dayton center DaRon Holmes II, whom Durando describes as a versatile big man capable of protecting the rim and spacing the floor. Other mock drafts give the Nuggets Duke center Kyle Filipowski, Indiana forward Kel’el Ware, Creighton wing Baylor Scheierman and California wing Jaylon Tyson.
- Michael Rand of the Star Tribune examines the debate over whether the Timberwolves should keep the core of their current roster together or try to shake things up with an offseason trade.
Warriors get Towns
Wolves get Kuminga, Wiggins and Moddy
Towns FG 47%
Kuminga FG 53%
I don’t think the wolves want anything to do with Wiggins again.
That’s way too much for Towns. Moody, Wiggins, and maybe a future first. but not Kuminga.
Mungo- Why would Minnesota accept a trade of a rotation piece, an overpaid backup, and a late lottery 1st for Towns? He’s still an all-star, no matter what people think of him.
Wolves would laugh and hang up. You do realize how bad of a year Wiggins had last year, right, relative to previous performance? He won’t fetch nearly as much as he would’ve a year or two ago.
The Wizards already have Deni Avdija who has a very similar skill set as Josh Giddey. Neither player shoots the three very well or at a high volume. They both can be initiators of offense. Washington could do worse or perhaps they move Avdija.
Spurs is like perfect fit for Giddey right now’
Not really. He can’t shoot and I have no idea if he’d be a culture fit. Not every PG who can pass should automatically be a Spurs target. And, frankly, I’m not even that excited about the passing. Didn’t watch him much so maybe someone else can chime in, but his AST to TO ratio seems lackluster for such a good playmaker.
Ive seen enough to declare Josh Middey is “just a guy”. Overrated plus a public shady incident = move on.
Wizards need to commit to a full rebuild.
Take back bad contracts for picks, look to try build guys value back up and get positive returns, do well in the draft and give young guys a second opportunity through FA. Even if you manage to fill out by getting role players on good contracts you can use that as bait for first round picks.
So far you have Bilal Coulibaly who’s only 19 and looked decent in his rookie year. Poole I’m actually fine with, he’s only 24 and will get better it’s just his shot selection that lets him down.
As for Josh Giddey, he makes sense if you’re not resigning Tyus Jones and he’d fit well with Poole in the backcourt. He’s tall, he’s long, he can defend, he’s got a good basketball IQ, he’s a pass first guy he just needs to be more confident in his shooting and scoring ability. As for how they’d get him if the price is the 26th pick and a future second then sure. He would be a starter and potential long term piece in the rebuild and at 26, you’re lucky if you get a guy that’ll appear in more than 20 games….
As for that 2nd pick tho, I’d be hoping for Alex Sarr but that looks to be the Hawks selection at 1st so I’d take Donovan Clingan.
After a Giddey trade you’d be set at
Giddey Poole Coulibaly Kuzma and Clingan
That’s a decent little 5 for a rebuild, definitely listen to offers on Kuzma and then make smart decisions in FA and/or trades.
For example Malachai Flynn could be a little steal, hardly likely anyone would offer him the back up spot but you could and if he balls out you’ve got a bargain that many teams will value in a trade.
Bol Bol is another id try target, he’s the sorta guy that once it all falls into place could be a most improved candidate and put up a nice 16-9-2 or something.
Then lastly Cam Reddish, give him one last opportunity to really showcase his skills and he could also really add value in a potential future trade.
Giddey fits the jazz…
i was thinking hornets. then draft shannon jr to round out the roster.
Giddey fits the thunder, as their backup PG. He’s struggled playing out of position in the starting lineup but is a solid passer/facilitator. If a late first and future SRP is a “reasonable offer”, there is no reason whatsoever for the thunder to trade him. The last thing the thunder need is more draft fodder especially since they don’t have a reliable backup PG.
Two low key players I think the Sixers should target via trade are Giddey and Kispert.
They have nothing to trade. No picks and everyone is off the books besides Embiid, Maxey will be back and extended.
Who liked this comment? The Sixers have no picks? You sure about that?
The 2025 1st is tied up in a trade with protections. 2026 is in a swap situation least favorable so late 1st. They also have a pick in 2027 tied. Can’t trade picks in back to back years so they have no room to make trades yet. No one cares if they have picks in 2028-30 those prospects are in middle school.
OKC can use Giddey in a trade to move up a bit.
I don’t think moving up in this draft is worth giving away Giddey.
Giddey and Dieng for Herbert Jones would be a good fair value swap if the Pels don’t move Ingram for a guard. However they’d be wing heavy.
