The Warriors are making an addition to their front office, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link), who reports that the team is hiring Jon Phelps as its cap strategist and team counsel.
Phelps has long been a member of the Pistons‘ front office, having held a number of different roles with the team since 2014, as Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press tweets. His most recent title in Detroit was senior director of basketball strategy.
As Slater observes, Phelps will fill the hole in the Warriors’ front office that was created when Onsi Saleh left the organization earlier this spring to become an assistant general manager in Atlanta. Saleh’s position in Golden State had been VP of basketball strategy and team counsel.
Here’s more from around the Pacific:
- While the Suns could use some additional play-making, they don’t need to add a traditional starting point guard to their roster this summer, according to Gerald Bouguet of PHNX Sports. As Bourguet outlines, it would be extremely difficult to find a player who fits that bill anyway, given the team’s limited resources and the fact that there are bigger needs elsewhere on the roster.
- Bill Plaschke of The Los Angeles Times makes the case against the Lakers using either of their two draft picks on Bronny James, arguing that it would be a “insanity” to take LeBron James‘ son at No. 17 and “pandering” to use the No. 55 pick on him. In Plaschke’s view, the Lakers would only be drafting Bronny as further incentive for LeBron to re-sign, which isn’t fair to the 19-year-old.
- While it happened a year later than initially expected, it was good to see the Clippers putting their money where their mouth is by extending head coach Tyronn Lue, writes Law Murray of The Athletic, noting that the team can now shift its attention to its major roster decisions. Paul George will be the focus of the offseason in L.A., but the team also has important calls to make on free agent guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook and may look to extend center Ivica Zubac, as Murray details.
LeBron, choose a coach already.
Why not take Bronny? This years draft is a joke, they may as well call it the G league draft.
lakers are taking him with the first pick. He will not make it to pick 55. Some team will pick and stash him
Why take him with the 17th pick? No one else thinks he is that good.
Huh? That is a bizarre take. They may not be any immediate superstars. But, why can’t they develop into HOF players? Players do develop and get better.
Name a player that got drafted and never got minutes, and then suddenly developed into a HOF player. Or name a single G leaguer that even starts in the NBA now.
There are many undrafted players who starr is nba today. Heat always has 2-3 undrafted players on their roster. Thunders’ Dort is another great example who playd for the Gleague before becoming a star.
Give me a list of undrafted guys who you consider stars. You can’t be serious.
Ben Wallace and Connie Hawkins went undrafted and are in the Hall of Fame. Fred Van Vleet, Alex Caruso, John Starks weren’t drafted.
FVV and Alex Caruso…. Those are stars to you?
“Stars” is a rather subjective term. What do you consider a “star”.
Jonathan Kuminga came from the GLeague and starts for the Warriors.
Because he sucks compared to professional basketball players.
Lakers will choose Brawny and play him. Brawny will get the LeBron treatment, meaning sweet tweets and tons of free throw attempts. Thump City!!
Pacific notes…. lakers still stink and quite possibly dead last in the Pacific 2024/25. Lakers are drafting Bronny at 55, wow. Will the warriors break up the band and or will Steph team up with LBJ? Will the clippers get healthy and ever win anything? Are phoenix still calling beal a star? Whens Sacramento waking up? Pacific notes concluded….yep, lakers still stink.
One trick pony over here thinks anyone gives a flying french f**k about his takes. Hilarious. Might as well be a Sillyman burner.
It’d be stupid to draft him. He’s a little guard that can’t shoot. He doesn’t help you win basketball games.
