Mavericks forward Tim Hardaway Jr. is a prime trade candidate to watch, according to Marc Stein, who says in his latest Substack article that Dallas is more likely than ever to find a deal this offseason involving Hardaway, who has been on the trade block during previous transaction windows. He’s entering the final season of his four-year contract and his cap hit is declining to $16.2MM, which should make him a little easier to move than he has been in the past.
Stein suggests that finding a deal involving Hardaway is a “key element” of the Mavs’ plans to re-sign Derrick Jones. The implication there is that moving off of Hardaway’s contract could free up the non-taxpayer mid-level exception for Jones, allowing Dallas to sign him for up to $12.9MM instead of up to $5.2MM (the amount of the taxpayer MLE).
It’s unclear if that means the Mavs will look to offload Hardaway without taking back any salary in return, or if they hope to take back a lesser-paid player in any deal.
Here’s more from Stein’s latest round-up of rumors from across the NBA:
- While the Jazz and Sixers have both been linked to Zach LaVine as of late, Stein hears from league sources that Philadelphia has minimal interest in the Bulls guard and says he’s been “advised to dismiss” Utah’s reported interest as well.
- The Lakers hope to hire two former head coaches as assistants on J.J. Redick‘s staff. Scott Brooks has been reported as one Lakers target, and Stein suggests James Borrego might be another, though he says the Pelicans are determined to keep Borrego on Willie Green‘s staff if he doesn’t get a head coaching job. The Celtics are likewise hoping to fend off interest from the Lakers and any other rivals for assistant Sam Cassell, with Charles Lee and Jeff Van Gundy having already been hired for new jobs this spring.
- Speaking of Borrego, both he and Kenny Atkinson continue to be top candidates for the Cavaliers‘ head coaching vacancy, which Stein expects to be filled soon. Depending on who gets that job, either Borrego or Atkinson (or both, if Cleveland chooses another candidate, such as Micah Nori) are expected to be in the mix for the Pistons‘ head coaching position, according to Stein, who adds that Detroit’s search could extend into July.
- According to Stein, rumblings about the possibility of the Spurs making a trade with the Hawks to move up from No. 4 to No. 1 haven’t gone away. The wording of this item from Stein makes it sound as if Alexandre Sarr might be the target in that scenario, but that seems unlikely, given that Sarr doesn’t look like a great fit next to the French big man already on San Antonio’s roster (Victor Wembanyama).
Hardaway Jr. could be a prime candidate for a Bruce Brown swap.
Why in the world would the Pacers do that? Are they getting 5 first rounders to go with THJ?
Bruce Brown is on the Raptors, and it makes sense because Tim Hardaway Jr. could replace Gary Trent Jr.
The Raptors are in the middle of a rebuild/retool. Why would they want a mediocre rental like THJ for a valuable player like BB?
Every LaVine rumor gets dismissed. Who would be dumb enough to take on that contract?
Pistons and wizards are usually go-to’s in that department. Bulls’ best hope, unless kings interest is real for some reason
Wouldn’t count out Kings wanting to run a lineup of Fox/Monk/LaVine/Murray/Sabonis… all offensive and no defense got them further than this year. B squad of Mitchell/Ellis/Duarte/Lyles/Len. Maybe use 13 and Sasha to for a decent wing. Not saying I love it but I could see them doing this
Spurs have nothing to gain by getting the number one pick as compared to 4 because they don’t need a big man. I suppose they might have decided Risacher is their clear top choice, but doesn’t seem worth giving up much
They clearly need a big. Unless you’re a huge Zach Collins fan. And who came up with the idea that Sarr & Wembo wouldn’t fit well together? Other than them both being very young how does that make any sense?
They can get another big, but they don’t need to move up. Sarr or Clingan may not matter at all for them. SAS needs a pg more though.
It does not make sense as developing two top pick bigs at the same time does not work well. The last pairing I remember was Chandler and Curry.
Exactly – you don’t use the number 1 pick for a back up big man and you certainly don’t trade up from 4 to 1 for it
You need to understand the spacing Wemby needs. There’s no way he can share the court w a traditional 5.
1st off Sarr is very far from a traditional 5. All the guys that come to mind when I think of his game are 4s (Bosh/KG/etc). 2ndly Wembo can definitely thrive with Sarr, especially if they get a savvy, great passing pg like Trae to run their offense
I definitely wouldn’t call Sarr a “traditional” five, but I do think that center is probably his best long-term position, same as Wemby. Guys like Bosh and Garnett would probably end up as centers if they were playing in today’s game too.
It’s not out of the question that Wemby and Sarr could work together, but I don’t think it’s a certainty either, and that’s a big risk to take if you’re acquiring the No. 1 overall pick to draft him. That’s why it doesn’t really make sense to me.
Sarr is prob gonna end up as a 5 & may actually start every game at 5 as rookie if he goes to DC but he could also easily play next to Wembo. These are 2 young guys with very versatile games. Only issue would be egos. Strictly from a basketball pov those 3 guys would be historically elite defensively. They’re both extremely agile for their size, both long with good instincts, both great rebounders. Offensively they’re both elite runners, both have good hands. Obv Wembo is well advanced comp to Sarr but to me Sarr has KG type offensive potential. Other than Sarr not loving the view from Wembo’s shadow there’s no way these guys don’t gel as 1 of the best young frontcourts in NBA history.
If I’m Atl, they can have the #1 pick for #4 & either our 2025 1st or our 2027 1st plus a future 2nd. That shouldn’t be too much to ask for a guy like Sarr.
Realistically it seems like he’s forcing his way to DC, making this all moot but much like Shaq/Webber woulda worked minus egos, Wembo/Sarr would def work minus egos.
And KG def wouldn’t have started his NBA career as a 5. Remember he was a 3 as a rookie… I do appreciate you commenting tho. It gets extremely frustrating trying to find someone sensible to talk basketball in here
In this era it’d be down to how hard KG fought that notion early on… As teams love to have a small line up, with players like Tatum playing the 5…
He was always the organiser on defence which was the centres role… So I think he’d naturally gravitate to it… And with Jokic making point centre accepted KG would be used in a similar way on offence if he played as a 3, 4 or 5…
Sarr is a Center. He’ll be a good one.
Sankara didn’t even want Sarr on his team. He believes it’s the least important position.
I wouldn’t be mad if the Hawks drafted Sarr & he was used off the bench next season. Just bc a guy comes off the bench his rookie yr doesn’t mean he sucks or something. As far as SA tho he’d definitely start for them. Sarr & Wembo could be their starting frontcourt for a decade plus. Not sure what makes you think Sarr would be a back up for SA
Your argument against Wembo/Sarr is that having 2 young elite bigs won’t work & Curry/Chandler not working in Chicago is your evidence?… Come on y’all. Give me something/anything to work with. We can talk about the pg thing. Signing Tyus Jones &/or drafting a pg at 8 would get them straight at pg. But CLEARLY Wembo/Sarr are a much better duo than Curry/Chandler
If anyone can get two bigs to work together it’s Pop, though Sankara is right on the egos. The Spurs twin tower title runs worked because The Admiral was willing to take a back seat and Duncan is a very laid back guy. It helped Robinson was a vet, but that vet was the star of the team for years. Not everyone is willing to take a back seat.
If anyone can get two bigs to work together it’s Tim Duncan or Vic Wembo. The shine been off Pop for yrs, at least since he ran Kawhi outta town.
Shakira it is Wemby I hope this is not where you have to be delicate with what you say like microSOFT who cares about Kawhi that’s over with
Many think Risacher has the most upside in this draft. Still very young and even raw.
Has positional size. And great mechanics on his shot. Projected to be a 2way star. Pops can develop young talent with the best of them. Imo Hawks don’t have the time to wait on Risacher. They’d probably just mess it up. If Spurs want to move up. It’s Risacher they want ……
I agree he may be but I just don’t think you give up multiple picks to move 3 spots
It’s the #1 pick in the draft. A Future #1 does not hurt SA. Especially if you believe in Risacher. Outside shooting is what Wemby needs around him.
Detroit Pistons …….
Sign Kenny Atkinson as new coach ……
Trade The 5th pick, Ivey, Wiseman to Bulls
Zach LeVine to Pistons. Starting SG.
The Pistons were one of worst scoring teams in NBA. Zach changes that overnight. As a scorer he gives others better looks. Detroit is the best place for Zach. He can help them and help himself. Scoring is what he does best. Scoring is what Pistons need most. And Pistons might be able to give next yrs pick instead of this yrs. Then it’s even better for Pistons.
Kenny A would be a great choice to develop that young roster
This honestly the best outlook for the Bulls when it comes to trading Lavine. They already want to get into the top 5 if possible why not take a swing and see if Detroit bites. Bulls get a promising young star, a big, and a top 5 pick all for Lavine and that horrible contract.
The Pistons aren’t giving up Ivey to take on Lavine’s contract. Yes, the Pistons need scoring, but they need 3 pt shooting to provide some spacing for Cade and Ivey. Lavine simply takes minutes from Ivey and isn’t a significantly better defender. This would be great for the Bulls but the Pistons would probably counter with the 5th pick & Wiseman for Lavine & Chicago’s 11th pick or a protected 1st in 2025. Bulls need to pay to get out of a bad contract.
76ers can easily absorb all of Hardaway’s contract for a 2nd round pick .
Will take a# 1 pick to get rid of Hardaway or at least 2 # 2 picks….
3 teamer!
Wiggins to Dallas
Bruce Brown to GSW
THJ and Josh Green to Toronto
Wiggins is the perfect piece to the puzzle to Dallas. He’s a solid 3 and D wing, who just a couple seasons ago was an all star lol. He’d be their best guard/wing defender, and still someone that can give you 15 points. Josh Green would be a sore loss but your trying to win now and sometimes you have to sacrifice the young guys. Jaden Hardy would be able to step up his role and DJJ would be your back up wing.
Kyrie Luka Wiggins Washington Lively
Exum Hardy DJJ Kleber Gafford
I don’t think it would be a bad idea to try add another defender for the perimeter like Kris Dunn.
GSW, Bruce Brosn just seems like the perfect plug and play guy to fit into their system. Somewhat similar to Iggy, can play SG or SF, solid defender and just makes winning plays.
Opens up the starting SF position to Kuminga aswell as a little bit of a salary dump.
Toronto Bruce Brown does have value but he’s also clearly not in your long term plans and is also on an expiring contract. In return you get Josh Green who is a solid young player and THJ mainly for salary matching but he can also replace GTJ who looked like leaving and end of the day it’s only for 1 year as he’s also on an expiring deal.
Josh Green is too valuable. I don’t think Mavs will trade him
No one beside Luka is to valuable on the Mavs.
Green is nice but Wiggins is clearly the better player. Green’s ceiling is probably Wiggins worst season …
Raps don’t want THJ. Jonathan Issac sure.
THJ and a FRP would get them Kispert or Quentin Grimes and salary relief to offer the full MLE to DJJ.
Wouldn’t be shocked to see Lavine for Huerter and Harrison Barnes. Kings did covet him when he was first traded to bulls and of course bulls matched the contract extension.
Mavs should trade for Kuzma for sure.
