7:34pm: The signing is official, according to a team press release.
9:00am: Summer League standout DJ Steward has agreed to a two-way contract with the Bulls, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
The 22-year-old guard is coming off a 37-point performance in Friday’s win over Atlanta. He averaged 17.4 PPG in five Summer League games with Chicago while shooting 47% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
Steward is a Chicago-area player who was a highly regarded recruit out of high school in 2020. He played one season at Duke, then signed with the Kings after going undrafted in 2021.
Steward spent two years in the G League with Stockton before signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Celtics last September. He played for Boston’s G League affiliate in Maine last season.
The addition of Steward fills the Bulls’ last two-way opening. Andrew Funk and Adama Sanogo are also on two-way deals.
Great game yesterday
Another guard, bulls need 5 more guards…
Interesting. I live near where the Maine Celtics play and I saw him a bunch and he impressed. I actually liked him better than JD Davidson.
I thought he was better than JD as well from few games I saw on tv.
Damn been a DJ believer since HS/Duke, hope he gets his break he has improved a lot!
This dude was in a situation where there were players in front of him, but I liked him in his first summer league a few years ago, after seeing him a bit before that draft, as I’ve mentioned here in the past. Guards multiple positions, knows how to play, plays hard…if his shot has improved, he is a valuable piece. Has some redundancy there though, so for them, it’s either depth, or they have a potential trade in the works
Sanogo is the guy who impressed me. He should be getting minutes. Jaylen Smith and Sanogo at the 4 would be a dynamo to contend with on the boards. But Bulls will let him rot in Hoffman Estates. The guy who needs to go is Henry Drell. Whatever did anybody ever see in that guy? He totally rots. DJ Steward put on a pretty good show in Summer League. Will it play in the NBA? Only one way to find out.
