July 4: Burks’ minimum-salary contract is now official, the Heat announced in a press release.
July 3: The Heat have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent guard Alec Burks, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link). It’ll be a minimum-salary deal, confirms Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald (Twitter link).
Burks, who will turn 33 later this month, is a 13-year veteran who has played for seven teams since entering the NBA in 2011, including both the Pistons and the Knicks in 2023/24.
The former 12th overall pick had a solid first half in Detroit, averaging 12.6 points per game with a .401 3PT% for the league’s worst teams. However, he struggled after being sent to New York in a deadline deal, scoring just 6.5 PPG and making 30.1% of his three-pointers in 23 regular season games down the stretch.
Burks has a solid track record as a scorer and shooter (.383 career 3PT%) and finished the year strong this spring, reclaiming a spot in a banged-up Knicks’ rotation during the Eastern Conference semifinals. In New York’s last five playoff games vs. the Pacers, he averaged 17.8 PPG on .510/.429/.844 shooting.
There should be minutes available in Miami for Burks, who will be tasked with helping to fill the holes created in the rotation if Caleb Martin and Haywood Highsmith don’t return to the team.
Burks projects to be the 13th player on a standard guaranteed contract with the Heat. That total doesn’t include Orlando Robinson, whose 2024/25 salary is non-guaranteed and whose hold on a 15-man roster spot appears tenuous.
…this means certain people are 1000% gone now…
But finally someone on my list, mostly in case of that happening, but on my list, mid to lower, but 1 of the better 3 and D wing options remaining and can replace some of what we lost with Caleb at the 3/2
We need help defensively at the 4/3 to replace highsmith, and there’s still people remaining; I still also would love to have Jamal Cain back, but that’s not happening
Rank a top5 of these Buffs in terms of who will have the best NBA career
Alec Burks, KJ Simpson, Chauncey Billups, Tristan de Silva, Scott Wedman, Spencer Dinwiddie, Cody Williams, Derrick White & Andre Roberson… link to m.youtube.com

I haven’t seen the type of video I normally would on draft guys, so I’m waiting on summer league. I had Jalen Williams super high in his draft class, so I can’t sayabout his brother until I’ve seen
Cody is a lot different from JDub. I get strong Austin Daye vibes from him but he does have potential to be a MPJ type shooter/scorer type forward when he gets stronger. You sleeping on Wedman tho.. link to m.youtube.com
He was wedged in there lol; I missed his name somehow, probably b/c I’ve had a hard time opening my eyes these last couple of days
Tyler Herro actually has a lot of Wedman in his game
Not a sexy FA signing at all, but Burks is serviceable and the fit is good
Not going to lie, when he was young, I always thought if he was healthy, he’d be the type to play for the Heat
Say it ain’t so. NYK should have kept a spot for him.
Ypy guys drafted his replacement, and also have considerable depth now…but yoy do need a floor spacing big, and I thought for sure it was going to be Thomas Bryant. Daniel Theis is still available, who would be a really strong fit, and Micah Potter, or Mike Muscala…There were several floor spacing bigs available at one point, and Filipowski was there for them in the draft, but they still have a lot of time to figure that out…
…actually, Jay Huff would also be very interesting for the Knicks as an option at the 5 behind Randle
They’re ideally looking for a short rotation 5 who can defend, board and protect the rim. Play 20 mpg behind Mitch and start when Mitch is hurt. Perimeter skills would be a bonus. I didn’t see anyone who fit us in the draft at where we picked. They liked Ware and Missi, but both were gone. I don’t see anything left in free agency at this point either.
I don’t feel like you guys need a pick and roll defending big that can protect the rim, unless you get rid of Jericho Sims. You guys have Randle at the 5, and Mitchell Robinson behind hom, and Sims, so you could use a floor spacer, whovh yoy needed before, and possibly another smallball 5 option, of there’s roster room for 2 more bigs…Achouwa was nice as depth for Randle there, but the floor spacing big is more important, In my opinion
I have to see about what you’re looking for, but off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure there’re a couple of guys available there…I think nerlens noel is also still out there, and he was actually on my list for the Heat in certain scenarios
But I honestly thought Bryant was for sure going to the Knicks. I really like the guys I mentioned for them still though.
Randle has been strictly a 4 for us under Thibs and it’s turned his career. I can see a small role for him at 5 this year, but not as his primary position. The base 5’s right now are Mitch and Sims. Not enough. At least one of IH or PA has to be replaced.
On this roster, he now absolutely has to play more 5, no excuses for thibs. Bridges/OG/Randle 3-4-5
Those bigs would be great fits, man. Theis is probably the best 1, b/c he can do what both of us are saying. He can defend pick and roll, and protect the rim, and he can also shoot and isn’t a ball stopper. I like Pitter as a spacing 5 that can playmake a little bit from a couple areas of the floor, and Jay Huff is more of a bigger 5, but he is skilled, adequate defensively, can shoot it a bit, and knows how to play; I think he’s interesting there, especially after losing Hartenstein
Bridges would be at SG with Donte back on the bench. Randle can’t handle 5, he’s not a solid defender at the 4 to begin with. He’d get into foul trouble or just play matador if he were at the 5.
2011 NBA draft.
# 10 Jimmer Fredette
# 11 Klay Thompson
# 12 Alec Burks
You just never know how your draft picks will turn out until you play the games.
Kudos to Jerry West by the way for having the eye to see that Klay would be good enough to be a starter in the league for a decade. I don’t think he was on anyone else’s top 25 board.
Jerry may have had best eye for talent ever. Auerbach is there too.
Lol gotta love how this guy somehow makes Jerry West the hero lol y’all are truly something else. But yea, if you watch these guys play before they get to the league it’s not rocket science to project how they’ll be at 25+yo. This should be a lesson in why it’s not smart to just blindly listen to whatever the media is pushing. Jimmer obv got way more attention & he was one of my favorites when he was at BYU too tbh but it didn’t take a genius to see that he would struggle to play pg in the NBA.
This guy? Is that me?
I think Jerry West has been awesome. He saw a lot more than I did. I’ve been wrong on a bunch of dudes.
I don’t have the track record you do Sankara. You’re a lot better at this than I am. But I’ll recognize Jerry West as being great at it also.
Maybe if you knew what position he actually plays. We might take you more seriously.
It’s easy to talk about greats with track records. There’s a reason why they have it. To bad mouth West in anyway. Only says more about you.
Its not rocket science? How come your not in a front office then today?
I mean besides the point that you clearly don’t even understand how the new CBA works per your last weeks postings….
Agreed. I can’t put anyone above West as a team builder. His impact there over 4 teams rivals his impact as a player. Which says a bunch.
I’d argue that it’s the GMs and scouts that can’t get it right half the time.
Knicks need a real back up center, Sims is a solid 3rd option, foul trouble, injuries, general rest… that’s right THIBS, doesn’t believe in rest, never mind….

This is exactly the kind of player Thibs can help. He’s 22yrs old. And is better now than when Mitch got drafted. Excellent pickup. I still see Knicks trading or signing another C.
Believe it or not I saw him play a lot in the NBL. The games were on ESPNPlus, and I ended up watching a bunch of them.
He’s got a shot. True center, can board and block shots, high motor.
