Free agent forward Kyle Anderson is headed to the Warriors via a sign-and-trade transaction with the Timberwolves, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports (Twitter link). He’ll be signing a three-year, $27MM contract. The third year is non-guaranteed, Anthony Slater of The Athletic tweets.
The Timberwolves will receive a future second-round pick swap and cash in the sign-and-trade, Wojnarowski adds (Twitter link).
Anderson will slot into the traded player exception created in the Klay Thompson three-team deal with Dallas and Charlotte. The acquisition will put the Warriors a projected $3.2MM below the $170.8MM luxury tax line with 13 players rostered, cap expert Yossi Gozlan tweets. They’ll be hard-capped at the first tax apron ($178.1MM).
It had been speculated that Anderson, always a solid role player, would be difficult for Minnesota to retain due its salary-cap issues. The Timberwolves are a second-apron team, severely limiting their flexibility. They won’t be able to use the TPE generated by the Anderson sign-and-trade because of the restrictions for second-apron teams under the current CBA.
Rated No. 30 on our list of top 50 free agents, Anderson will jump right into the Warriors’ rotation. He appeared in 79 regular season games last season, including 10 starts, averaging 6.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in 22.6 minutes per contest.
The 30-year-old is highly regarded for his defensive versatility, intangibles, and ability to serve as a secondary ball-handler, though he doesn’t provide much offensive punch. Anderson averaged double digits in points just once in a career that began in the 2014/15 season and is a 33.8% career 3-point shooter.
Yesterday I had had a feeling that Anderson is coming
Great acquisition
My prediction:
Warriors 50 wins next season
The third year of the deal is non-guaranteed. He fits into the just created Klay Thompson TPE and is essentially the return for Thompson’s departure.
Last year Klay + Paul = $73 million
Next year Melton + Anderson = 22 million
Save $51 miillion before tax
Do you actually believe that the warriors have gotten better since last year?
Guess warriors can’t acquire any big name free agent.
New CBA prevents super teams.
How so?
Sending teams into tax brackets that doesn’t allow them to sign free agents. How do you not know that? Notice how PG had a short list of teams that could sign him. How do you not know that?
I don’t know, because no one ever explained it to me. How did you not know that?
LMAO tell that to Boston and OKC bud
He’s plenty good and fills a very large hole in their roster. GSW did a lot to keep with the pack so far, would like to see Wiggins and GP2 gone next…
Notice something?? Warriors are going for defensive players.
Yup! Imagine if they actually do get Marcus Smart? Haha
Also: is Steph gunning for a 40+ PPG season next year? :)
They don’t want to part with Kuminga and he’s the only real asset they have
Nope, guess not.
How the mighty have fallen.
Coming here for the leftovers? The vultures are circling and boy are they hungry.
You bash your warriors constantly or throw in the towel and cloak it in the form of accepting reality. A fair weather fan are you mr.garywarriorsredsoxx.
Lol
Lol
You’re new here, you know nothing.
Well, nothing besides antagonism. You’re great at that.
He must not be that new, because he’s got you down to a t.
Another one of my fans. Go figure.
No garywarriorsredsox wrong not new just decided to call you out.
Well I could change my username like you do and then you’d never know who I was lol but that ain’t going to happen. Been here 12 years and like me or not you’re going to get an honest opinion and a lot of truth.
From you we’ll get as I said, antagonism and agitation, anger and prodding. And that’s just in two weeks lol.
My username is the same, been here 11 years. I speak the truth. You seem angry, agitated and prodded. So you must be 13.
Nailed it again. 12 and 1/2. You’re on a roll.
@King Buddha: Gary has been here a long time and is one of the nicest and level-headed posters here. He’s also a die-hard Warriors fan and not “fair weather” by any means. Get a clue.
Also remember when you posted a million times about how OG was leaving the Knicks? Hilarious.
I’ve been pretty agitated the last few days with all the haters posting garbage about the Warriors and I’ve taken it personally.
Your reply reminds me that it’s a poor attitude to have.
Thank you RCT I don’t deserve your kind words. It shows the type of person you are with your compliments. Much appreciated.
Budhha – as someone who buts heads with Gary often as someone who can’t stand the Warriors, Gary is a true fan of the franchise. Understands what the team was before the dynasty. He’s also a realist. I can respect that
What? Who’s this?
Just kidding Wash. Probably the nicest thing I’ve ever seen you write. Much appreciated and definitely not deserved with the way I’ve been acting the last 2 days.
Again very nice. What you’ve written here really helps me calm down and not take things so personal.
In fact the Warriors don’t even know who I am !! LOL why should I fly off the handle when a stranger says the Warriors suck? Thanks again.
yep the Lakers look like a bottom feeding team so Bronny can get some minutes.
There really arent any big name free agents left. DeRozan is pretty much the only big name left and I think he is looking for more money although I think he may have been worth waiting a bit more for since the money is drying up on anything resembling a contender.
5th ring guaranteed
How?
Unless of course you’re a hater jealous of the first 4 lol !!
Your comment doesn’t even make sense.
Nothing I write makes sense to you.
Garywarriorsredsox lives in the past glory years of the warriors. Somewhat surprised he hasn’t brought up wilt the stilt and his run with the philadelphia warriors.
You nailed it great job.
Seriously I go way back but not that far. I go back to Greg Ballard Terry teagle Winston Garland Lester Connor Ralph Sampson Joe Barry Carroll Lewis lloyd. Jim Peterson Larry Smith that’s all I have for right now top of my head.
The semi good times started when we drafted Chris Mullen 1985. Nelly moved him to forward and we drafted Mitch Richmond next. Tim Hardaway came along and Run TMC was born. 3 years of amazing basketball and first round hype. Good times.
Greg Ballard former bullet. Well garywarriorsredsox. My glory day judgements are from wilt to the kangaroo kid to Moses and Dr j and everything in between until now. No fair weather fan am I. That Robert parish trade still can’t get out of mind.
Kangaroo kid? Who was that? Yep Warriors Got fleeced. Parish and McHale for Joe Barry and Ricky brown. Yikes.
The ’80s and 90s were pretty rough except for a couple of years here and there and the 2000s had some stinkers as well.
But sticking with them win or lose has paid off with these four championships in the last 15 years. It’s been an incredible ride. Have a lot to be thankful for.
Now we start over and it’ll be exciting again to see what the next decade brings. Dynasties in other cities? Great teams great players coming to our building. Lots to look forward to.
Maybe the Warriors can catch lightning in a bottle again sometime? It’ll be fun either way.
Low key great offseason brewing for GSW. I know it won’t pop with the masses but I like the think tank behind it….and I dont think they are done yet either
Copy & paste for LAC as well
They both might not be strong contenders next year but Imo they both have top tier front offices which is going to be oh so much more important moving forward, cant say I’m not a bit jealous as a LAL fan who rank as a bottom tier front office currently
The Clippers are going to better than a lot of people think. Sure they lost George and that hurts but by picking up Nic Batum, Derrick Jones Jr., Kevin Porter, Kris Dunn, and Mo Bamba they got a lot deeper with guys that can make plays and with the exception of Porter grind on defense.
@Cap you see the forest from the trees. This offseason is about getting out from the tax, then going hard at the biggest FAs next offseason and beyond. GSW’s widnow is not closed. It is not closed until Steph Curry is no longer elite.
They have no cap room next offseason and like 15 teams already do so they would have a ton of competition. They have already committed money thats guaranteed that takes them over the tax. They can reset the repeater tax a bit although even that checks for 2 of the last 3 so they would need a second season out to fully reset. It will raise faster so they can probably stay in this realm where they can get some exceptions open to add a player or two.
They have to pay Kuminga and Moody who have cap holds near 20M next year so they wont be able to have any sort of cap room unless they are both traded.
So now for Thompson they got 2 2nd round picks and Anderson. S/T is looking better.
Gave one pick swap up in the KA S&T
Its a pick swap that probably mean nothing.
Now remove Wiggins, GP2 and Looney’s money and swap it out for whoever we get for them, then lets see where we are (tba)
Nobody is on the trade block that they want dude smh. If they wanted BI they would have dealt for him already. Markkanen may be more available at the deadline if Utah cant get him extended since he’s expiring, but they want the Bridges package of 5 1sts and swaps which GSW doesnt even have.
Nobody is available dude what stars are on the market?
Define “Great”.
The only way they’re not done is if they can find a taker for Wiggins Moody and or GP2.
Correct, I should have specified, the next move (if any) will come via trade (and it looks like it will have to be even money or less coming in/not huge deal)
50/50…can be done at the TD as well as those expiring’s (GP, Looney, Moody) really play up well then compared to now
Must be chasing a championship right? Weird he didn’t take more of a discount to play with Draymond. – Delusional Warrior Fan
Chasing a championship he would have stayed with the wolves or joined the mavericks. I think he went for the most money he could get.
Woah…lowered their eyes from Markkanen pretty quick lol, oh Markkanen must be headed to L.A for D-lo, Rui few picks etc….hahaha. Atleast warriors are making moves, trying to get better, while others run back what hasn’t worked. Sign, JJ, Draft Bronny, sign daddy to max with a no trade clause will handcuff the lakers big time. How can L.A recoup picks for a rebuild with a forty yr old having a no trade clause? This paycut Bron is taking trying to help the lakers narrative is hilarious also. Literally can’t do anything with this guy running the show. Does Ant have a no trade clause too?
Utah is not trading Markkahen for picks. They want good young allstars if they trade him. They have 13 1st round picks in the future so they don’t need more. Talk is that Utah may not trade him and build around him.
Utah should be building around Lauri, but if not, GSW should not give up Kuminga and Moody for him. If GSW can get him without giving up either of those two, they should.
If Warriors want Markkahen they will need to part with Kuminga. Markkahen is the pipe dream for some of the bandwagon warrior fans. Just like how they thought Giannis was coming to the warriors. They are playing out the year with 13 roster spots filled. i wic sh they kept Quinonnes.
Collect the assets first and you have assets to make a huge trade
Markkahan only has one year left on his contract, so getting rid of Kuminga doesn’t make much sense when you add in all the rest of what the Jazz will want in return for him.
Utah wants 4 first round picks unprotected and two pick swaps plus a young player. Utah wants what the Nets got for Bridges. Not happening. But nothing wrong with Ainge putting it out there.
If Utah was going to trade him they could get a lot better offers from a few other teams than the warriors have in assets. So why waste time dreaming about somebody who will never be a warrior.
So they got a min slot left and as long as they don’t take more salary in trades can reset the tax this year
I thought they would reset, wasn’t sure, but the current math definitely suggests they will end the year sub 172 and reset
Which is why all this “window” talk is nonsense. GSW’s window opened in 2014, and remains open until Steph stops being elite. GSW will get a huge name in FA next year to add to Dray and Steph’s last 2 seasons together while keeping Kuminga, Moody, TJD and Podz, and GSW will contend again.
@DaveyJ
They have 120M in contracts next year before the 37M ish cap holds for moody Kuminga or the value of year one on their new contracts. They dont have any cap room unless Steph and Dray want to take a huge discount on there next deals in 2 and 3 years. or they trade a bunch of Wiggins/Kuminga/Moody.
They cannot get a max below the cap period without blowing up the entire roster…
They can go up to the apron so they have about 7M left and could use the BAE for a player up to 5 I think. They also still need to sign Post although maybe they are trying to do him on a 2 way.
Oh my god I literally used to call this guy “Dollar Store Klay”!!! LMAO!!!!! Welcome home! At least he isn’t another short guard! hahahaha
If the Warriors stay out of the luxury tax for a year, they will not only save money this year, they will reset their luxury tax penalties if they exceed the luxury tax line in the future. Thinking ahead to when Kuminga and Moody get extended and other possible moves in 2025.
Yes! Next offseason and beyond will see the Warriors as major players in free agency. Who will be available remains to be seen, but bringing in Anderson and Melton actually improves the roster greatly defensively from the previous season, and keeps them in contention this season.
Early prediction: GSW actually got better?
No stop saying this…
Being right too early doesn’t mean I’m wrong.
Yes it does pending a massive move they wont have cap space you just dont understand how the cap works
So are they keeping Wiggins…
Wait, what if the sign and trade involves Wiggins?
This doesn’t involve Wiggins. He makes more than $9 million. This is for Klay Thompson.
Actually the “trade” part was a mere pick swap and cash!
It’ll be tough to find a taker but Wiggins Moody and GP2 are still on the table to try to improve the team.
It’s official: no big-name acquisitions for Dubs this offseason. Next summer will be the time to either go for it and try secure that #2 scoring threat (if Kuminga hasn’t already locked down the spot) OR to tear down/start anew and send out the final 2 or 3 remaining pieces of the fallen dynasty. Hard to envision the roster as-is as being any higher than 7 in the stacked-as-always West; so a play-in spot, at best. The silver lining though: the kids get to ball A LOT and will show what they can do.
Being they can actually sign any FA they want to next year, we can go ahead and move the “tear down” option off the table, as there are already too many young regulars here blossoming. Yep, everyone in the NBA and its media really should always act like Draymond and Steph are retiring 1-team guys, because that’s what is happening!
They absolutely can not
They likely can. You are acting like they have stopped making moves, why?
Steph/Dray/Wiggins are on the books for like 110M and wiggins would be replaced by another contract if he is traded. Moody and Kuminga have cap holds as restricted FA and boom your at the cap. Also KA will be like 9M and if they dont want to let them walk any other FA have cap holds until they sign elsewhere or have their bird rights renounced.
If they dont tear it down and trade Steph they will not have cap room especially a max deal.
Warriors are now a better team than Clippers but not Kings and Lakers
Lol
What did the Lakers do this off season? NOTHING. They are a bottom team.
NOOOOOOOOOO OH MY GOD NOOOOOOOOOOO :( :( :( WHYYYYYYYY he is literally a worse version of Draymond Green cmon broooooo
Warriors may be better than Lakers, at least they have a head coach.
Yeah but Kerr took almost a similar route with no coaching background. He went from player to GM to Marv Albert’s sidekick in the media to head coach.
JJ doesn’t have the GM experience but that doesn’t matter with coaching. I think he’ll be fine.
I thought this might be how it would fall as yesterday was playing out. Fits what I’ve been saying they’ve needed
If they can somehow move Wiggins and/or GP2 for Marcus Smart, it will be legitimately good offseason + getting out of the tax siutation means next year they can aim for elite free agents. As a fan, this is them “doing enough” imo.
They don’t need Marcus Smart; they have Melton, and still have GP 2 as of now, and multiple other guards…this is the type of player they needed the last 2 years, assuming he can knock down shots around the shooting they have. If his shooting struggles, that would be an issue, and conflict with Kuminga, but I think he fits, and should shoot it near his high point…
I also think Gui Santos should see more opportunities to fit the spot I’m talking about as a complement to wiggins/kuminga/draymond. He played well for them last year, and I suspect he’ll be more consistent heading into year 3, and can provide some of the stuff I’m talking about as well
Well, I would swap out Wiggins and GP2 for Smart, I just love Smart’s talents and want him on my team if possible.
Wiggins is both a better defender on bigger players than Smart, which is what they need, he also is a better shooter.
You understand that the tax is like 35M above the salary cap which is what you have to be below to have actual cap room to sign players no holds barred. They already are almost at the cap next season before Andersons 2nd year money and signing their draft pick. On top of that Moody counts for 17M and Kuminga lik3 21 unless they are traded or sign for less.
Wiggins is not a better defender on any players than Smart, Smart is one of the highest IQ guys in the league, Wiggins is the most checked-out guys in the league. That alone separates them.
You keep acting like I want to add but not subtract. I want Wiggins, GP2 and Looney gone. That means we can still add. Also the owners aren’t trying to manipulate the cap THAT much. GSW will never be brokies nor will they act like it.
Wiggins shut down Luka in the WCF if he is right he is a 28 year old early prime wing with better height and wingspan than Smart. Also a better shooter over his life in GSW. There are no players to add dude like if someone who is a star shakes free then sweet, but if you think that GSW can beat the HOU/OKC/BRK offers in picks for a real star your trippin.
They had one chance at a star trade and it was PG since they would give him the deal he wanted and he wanted to stay out west if possible so it was him forcing his way to GSW. It didnt work barring another star with leverage being like a year out from expiring choosing GSW they will be out bid by teams like OKC with just way more draft picks than GSW.
SlowMo shot a shockingly bad 23% from 3 last season. Small number of attempts for some reason but still. Not clear whose minutes he takes. Saric, Wiggins, Looney?
None of those. Probably back up to Green but not the centers and too slow to play the 3. Also will play 4 when Green plays center.
Huh? That means he would get the Saric and Looney minutes. Unless you think Kerr is going to reduce the minutes of Kuminga and Jackson-Davis.
What will be the Warriors starting lineup? Answer me that first.
If Wiggins starts then Anderson backs up Green. If Kuminga starts then Anderson backs up Green.
I don’t think Anderson backs up the five at all. And he won’t back up the three at all. I think I’m repeating myself here.
Now if Kerr starts the year with Green as his small ball 5 with Wiggins and Kuminga then Anderson backs up the 4 which would be Kuminga.
So again, none of those. He won’t back up Saric the 5, Looney the 5, or Wiggins the 3. He’ll back up green the 4. Or Kuminga the 4. Get it?
It’s the minutes I am talking about not the positions. First of all Saric is gone so his minutes are open – he played both the 4 and 5 at times until late in the season. By the end of the season Looney was playing very little and Jackson-Davis was getting most of the non Draymond minutes at the 5. Kuminga played both the 3 and 4 but Kerr repeatedly said he doesn’t like playing him and Wiggins together. Those are the puzzle pieces. Get it now?
I’m just answering your original question buddy. You figure it out.
He’s not taking Saric’s minutes who played the five predominantly from what I watched.
He’s not taking Loony’s minutes which was at the five predominantly.
And he’s not taking Wiggins minutes who plays the three predominantly.
It’s my belief Anderson will come in to play the four. It’s possible Kerr plays him at the five but I don’t think he’s good at the five. I also don’t think he’s suitable for the three.
I hope this makes sense.
It was a rhetorical question. I wasn’t asking your or anyone else here unless you are tight with Steve Kerr.
Okay then my apologies. I read your post wrong.
He plays the 4/3, but there are some theoretical lineups he could play at guard, actually, which could be really interesting…I don’t know they’ll do that much, but I’m just pointing it out
He shoots well every other season lately lols
Yo are you sure it’s a Sign and Trade? Several people were adamant on here that S&Ts don’t happen.
I know, me being one of them !!
I was mentally locked into the Warriors being over the cap, so no sign and trades.
They’ve done a great job getting under so I guess it’s really opening things up for the warriors. It’s amazing how complex this stuff is. You probably understand it a lot better than I do.
I will miss him as a Wolf. He would come in when the team was ice cold, and he’d throw up some slow motion runners that would somehow find the bottom of the net and change the games momentum.
His defense against Jokic was also fun to watch when Gobert missed Game 2.
