July 11: Beasley’s contract is now official, according to NBA.com’s transactions log.
July 6: Free agent guard Malik Beasley is planning to sign a one-year deal worth $6MM with the Pistons, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Beasley spent last season with the Bucks.
Beasley, 27, has averaged 10.9 points per game for his career and is a skilled marksman, shooting 38.5% from beyond the arc in 496 total regular season games, He was incredibly durable last year, starting in 77 of his 79 games for the Bucks and making a carer-high 41.3% of his three-pointers.
The Pistons’ interest in Beasley was reported on Friday night by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The fit between the two sides makes sense, as Detroit ranked 29th in made three-pointers and 26th in three-point percentage last year during a franchise-worst 14-68 season.
Beasley will join Tobias Harris (.368 career 3PT%) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (.360 career 3PT%) as some of Detroit’s key offseason additions who can make an impact from outside. Combine those moves with the fact the franchise is bringing in assistant Fred Vinson, known for his work with players from the three-point line, and it’s clear that spacing the floor around young guard Cade Cunningham was a top priority this offseason.
Beasley played for Milwaukee on a minimum contract last year and, after a successful individual year in which he participated in the NBA’s three-point contest, is signing a more significant deal.
Given the reported terms of Beasley’s agreement, Detroit could sign him using cap space or the room exception ($8MM). That decision figures to come down to what other moves the Pistons make in free agency and/or on the trade market.
Outside of Beauchamp, 23, every other contributor on the Bucks roster will be either turning 30 or older this upcoming season.
What are they doing? It’s Giannis and a bunch of aging, past their prime veterans who have all seemingly lost multiple steps in the last few years…
Man, they really closed their own window by forcing unnecessary mistakes, being impatient, and Doc will do what he does best helping to drive them to an early playoff exit..
If I’m Giannis, I’m demanding to be traded. It’s just been mistake after mistake after mistake, and he’s only one man. He can’t make up for an entire roster of hurt, injury prone veterans.
They better hope they hit on their 18 year old second round pick and G-League Ignite talent, Tyler Smith.
He could end up being a steal for the Bucks, but they’re going to need almost everything to fall perfectly for them to be able to be a legitimate contender this year.
Even so, there’s no way they’re beating a healthy Boston, Knicks, or 76ers squad.
If I’m the Bucks, I’m doing whatever I can to buy low on either Zach LaVine or going after Demar DeRozan in a sign and trade. They have to do something other than just absurdly hoping Middleton and Lopez will come back to form and stay healthy.
How is adding DeRozen going to help the Bucks age problem? It would likely cost them Portis, PatC, or both to get him. And he’s no spring chicken.
And I guess I’m in the minority on this, but I’m convinced the FO hasn’t made a move in the last 2, maybe 3 years without Giannis’ consent, or it being his idea in the first place. Bottom line, he had a major role in the moves that put them in this spot, he can suck it up and deal with it.
Middleton has never been a regular season performer but always flips a switch when the playoffs start. I’d take Khris overLavine or an even older player like DeRozen.
Let’s not forget PG13 is two years older than Middleton and has missed significantly more games over the last 3 seasons. So banking on Philly to be healthy for the playoffs is a pipe dream. I still consider a Bucks team with Giannis, Dame and Khris in the lineup the 2nd best team in the East.
I think people are forgetting the only reason the Bucks had back to back first round exits in the playoffs is because Giannis missed both series. Replacing Beasley and Crowder with Wright and Prince along with having Giannis available for the playoffs makes them a top 5 championship contender.
Also the offseason is far from over and the Bucks have been rumored to be shopping Lopez to upgrade their roster.
That was all before the Lillard trade (and the team having had a lackluster regular season), and his play has already started to decline a little. Not saying they can’t be contenders, but it’s not a sure thing either.
People also forget that the Bucks had the best record in the league in 22-23. Giannis only missed one playoff game vs the 8th seeded Heat, which they ultimately lost 4-1.
Although he wasn’t as dominant at all during the series due to injuries.
Smart move, gotta get as much coin as you can
Tobias as a floor spacer???
He’s a prototypical stretch 4.
He’s not gonna be asked to help ease burden on stars in playoff and title hunts. His job is to sit at the 3 point line and hit his career average pct from deep to bring out his defender from the basket so that Cade, Ivey, Thompson and soon Holland can do what they do best, IE slash/drive/facilitate inside the arc.
Tobias needs to simply be who he always has been. It doesn’t matter what he did in playoffs for Philly. In Detroit he is a CLEAR upgrade over ANYONE they had at the 4 last few years.
This has nothing to do with last years playoffs as bad as he was, it’s about his reluctance to shoot from 3 for the past 5 years. % is fine, it’s that he does not like to shoot from there and causes all kinds of spacing issues…I don’t know what to tell you, if he’s your prototype lol
Detroit is going to have a pretty good team compared to the east. Can see them in the play-in. No stars but great pieces.
Eh
They are improved but FAR from a “good” team. They still have 0 rim protection. Their interior D is still VERY bad. And behind Cade they still don’t have a proven PG that can run the offense, not to mention that they will be among leaders in turnovers again almost guaranteed.
Cade / Ivey / Thompson / Harris / Stewart
Sasser / Beasley / Hardaway / Duren
Is a MUCH better top 9 than what they had last yr, but it is NOT a playoff or play-in team
They will resign Fontechhio too. I’m not buying playoff tickets yet but it’s better than last year by a ton. They still could have 28M in cap room to facilitate a sign and trade and get either a player or picks.
We have no idea of this team because none of our players were playing in a system that brought out their talents. Cade Ivey Thompson are all top 5 picks under 22 yo.
Doesn’t seem like there has been any development or accountability, been a dumpster fire.
We now are making smart moves and not trying to win the offseason.
Don’t know if u watch pistons basketball, but ain’t no way Stewart is starting over Duran who averaged a double double.
They’re not gonna start Tobias at the 4 and Duren at the 5. The interior defense would be beyond bad
I’m not a Stewart stan, but people get way too caught up in the flash and athleticism of Durens game without realizing that the things coaching staffs look for are the things he’s still trying to develop and establish, to put it mildly
I’ll tell you right now, bookmark this page, cause if it’s between Duren and Stewart for who starts, Game 1 will be Stew
Even without any changes, I think better luck/variance/internal growth/coaching would’ve lead to a measurably better outcome than last season. That plus these additions lead me to agree with you. There’s enough pure talent there for a basic level of performance. Maybe not play-in, but certainly much better than last season.
That’s more of a sign of how weak the East is compared to how much Detroit has improved…
This is one of those signing where they hope he has a good first half and trade him for a 2nd round pick.
Trenendous move by Detroit and Trajan Langdon! It was a shame the Bucks wouldn’t pay Beasley more than $2.7 million. Beasley, Tobias Harris, and Tim Hardaway will all make Cade Cunningham even better.
From what I understand, MKE couldn’t pay him more than the minimum, due to their cap/tax situation.
Great additions by Detroit. Very good offseason. Besides talent, I can see very proven veterans in Tobías and THJ, and a proven veteran and shooter in Beasley. Much improved leadership and on court fit. Tobías leads by example, a quiet and very solid player, who Is a very versatile scorer.
Cade THJ/Beasley Ausar Tobias Duren is a nice starting lineup. Improving somehow on starting SF and bringing Ausar along slowly, would make it a solid lineup.
I would think a Rui Hachimura/Tobías starting F tándem would make sense.
If I’m the Bucks, I’d scoop Gary Trent Jr. up off free agency. He’s a very good shooter, provides toughness and has good experience. I can see him in MIL.
Nuggets couldnt get him? Would be a nice replacement to KCP, obviously he cant match KCP’s production (specially on defense) but better than nothing and definitely better than Justin Holiday
Duren needs to play PF and start shooting
