6:49pm: The Warriors will receive a pair of second-round picks from Dallas to complete the Thompson sign-and-trade, according to reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Wojnarowski (Twitter links).
One of those picks will be the Mavs’ own 2031 second-rounder, Woj adds (via Twitter). The other will be the least favorable of the Sixers’ and Nuggets’ 2025 second-rounders, tweets Anthony Slater of The Athletic. That 2025 pick belonged to the Hornets, so it appears one of the second-rounders Charlotte is sending to Dallas is immediately being rerouted to Golden State.
Combining all of today’s reporting, it sounds like the trade will break down as follows:
- Mavericks to acquire Thompson (via sign-and-trade) and a future second-round pick (from Hornets).
- Hornets to acquire Green (into cap room).
- Warriors to acquire either the Nuggets’ or Sixers’ 2025 second-round pick (whichever is least favorable; from Hornets) and the Mavericks’ 2031 second-round pick, in addition to generating a trade exception worth about $16MM.
1:34pm: After spending his first 13 NBA seasons with the Warriors, Klay Thompson is reportedly headed to Dallas. Thompson intends to sign a three-year, $50MM contract with the Mavericks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter links).
As Wojnarowski outlines, the plan is for the Mavs to acquire Thompson from Golden State in a three-team sign-and-trade, with swingman Josh Green heading from Dallas to the Hornets in the deal.
The Warriors and Mavericks are still working through the sign-and-trade details, according to reports from Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter links), who both say that the deal isn’t considered done from Golden State’s perspective.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports tweets that there’s a framework in place for a deal sending Green to Charlotte, while Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer (Twitter link) also hears that the Hornets are in agreement on their part of the deal.
As Marc Stein tweets, it sounds like Thompson, the Mavs, and the Hornets are all on board, with just the Warriors left to sign off. Golden State doesn’t want to take back salary in the transaction, Stein adds.
Wojnarowski reports (via Twitter) that the Hornets will be sending Dallas a pair of second-round picks for Green and that one of those second-rounders may be rerouted to Golden State.
The 11th pick of the 2011 draft, Thompson is one of the most accomplished shooters in league history, ranking sixth all-time in three-pointers made. The 34-year-old, who has knocked down 41.3% of his attempts from long distance over the course of his career, made five All-Star teams and won four championships with the Warriors.
While Thompson has remained an extremely productive rotation player, averaging 17.9 points per game with a .387 3PT% in 77 games (29.7 MPG) this past season, he has lost a step since suffering a torn ACL in 2019 and a torn Achilles in 2020. He was removed from the starting lineup in Golden State this season and his relationship with the franchise appeared to fray leading up to the expiration of his contract, resulting in Saturday’s news that he intended to leave the Warriors for a new team.
Thompson reportedly intended to talk to the Lakers, Clippers, and Sixers in addition to the Mavs when free agency opened on Sunday, with the Magic among the other teams said to have interest in the veteran sharpshooter. According to Wojnarowski (Twitter link), Thompson had four-years offers worth more overall money available, but the opportunity to win another championship and the difference in state taxes were among the factors that made him choose Dallas.
Thompson will give the Mavs another shooter on the wing alongside star guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. So far this offseason, the team has essentially swapped out three wings – Tim Hardaway, Derrick Jones, and now Green – for three new ones: Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes.
Assuming the deal is completed as reported, the Mavs’ team salary will be a few million above the tax line and about $3MM below the first apron, which will be their hard cap, per cap experts Bobby Marks of ESPN and Yossi Gozlan (Twitter links).
The Hornets were interested in Green back at the trade deadline when they worked out a separate deal with Dallas involving P.J. Washington, notes Fischer (via Twitter). They’ll get their man now and – based on the details reported so far – figure to operate as an under-the-cap team in order to take the incoming salaries of both Green and Reggie Jackson, whom they’re acquiring in a trade with Denver.
The Warriors, meanwhile, will be in position to create a trade exception worth Thompson’s new salary if they don’t take back any contracts in the deal. With Thompson and Chris Paul off their books for 2024/25, the Dubs have some newfound financial flexibility and appear poised to use their full mid-level exception to sign free agent guard De’Anthony Melton.
Things are looking very interesting now.
for the Hornets?
It’s funny cause Steven went on a rant the other day about how trading was over in the NBA
Good deal for Mavs
If Klay is a below average player, Mavs can easily move him. Low risk
My prediction
Klay is likely to shoot over 45% from the three because of Doncic
One of the best 3 pt shooters in history and he shot as high as 44% once his in 11 year career and it was 7 years ago, but sure in his age 34 season he’ll shoot over 45%
And you’ll notice that Steph Curry wasn’t the only true superstar on that team… A little lanky guy who they call KD.
Steph & KD’s combined Usage% was 61.4 that year. Luka & Kyrie’s combined Usage% was 64.1 or 2.7 higher. Klay’s going to get a higher rate of open shots with Lukai than he did in ’17-’18.
You speak like Curry isn’t an amazing passer.
Steph’s highlights are mostly shot taking, not passing. If we’re talking about passing meaning Assists, Spencer Dinwiddie chalks up assists at the exact same 6.7/36 as Steph.
Steph’s assists are low because the team is built on ball movement. There have been nights when Draymond gets 10 assists.
Lmao Steph doesnt pass as much because his role in the Warriors offense is to shoot. He isnt a stat padder like Luka or Harden who must have the stats to feel good. He sacrificed his assists to maximize his team, Klay probably will only sit in the corner in Dallas when his strength is shooting on the move off screens
I thought Hornets need to send 2 Seconds to Warriors.
What did Hornets contribute to the deal? Nothing
Good
a Second from Mavs
a Second from Hornets (via 76ers or Nuggets)
LeBro gonna cry
Glad to see he did not go to LA. He deserved better. Wish him well.
LeBron is no Doncic.
My prediction
Klay is likely to shoot over 45% from the three because of Doncic
Klay is likely to shoot over 38% from the three because of LeBron
Dumb take. Klay couldn’t shoot 45% next to curry, whose a better player than anyone you listed.
Not in the last two/three years. Luka is a dream teammate for a wing.
Klay will have many chances at wide open threes, it could make him young again. More worried about his D. Even DJJ was made to look a decent shooter, but vastly superior defender.
Bit too expensive but not my money. If he makes 45% they are favourite in the West.
Your prediction is likely to shoot 0%.
No matter how many times you say it, it still won’t come true.
Sure the guy with one leg is gonna all of a sudden shoot better than he ever has in his career despite playing on a team with Curry, Draymon and Durant
He may get a lot of open looks, but nobody hits 45% of 3’s at a high volume, not even Klay
Not as much as you apparently
Seems no one wants to play with LeBron?
Turns down 2 for 48 for 3 for 50? That 1 year and $2 million was what you were mad about Klay??
Jason Giambi turned down 6/120 from his hometown A’s to sign with the Yankees for 6/120+option year.
This is wrong and it somehow got 3 thumbs up, lol. Oakland never made an offer, and certainly couldn’t have paid him anywhere close to what the Yankees signed him for, which was 7 years, $120 million.
The A’s payroll in 2002 was $39 million. For the entire team. In 2001 it was $32 million. They were never going to pay $17 million a year back then for one player.
A’s made a offer with a no trade clause he used that to get a better offer from yanks with no trade clause
Not to mention Oakland wasn’t his home town.
Probably less about how Dallas valued him and more about how Golden State valued him. Guessing he wanted a “thank you” payment.
$160 million for 2 rehab and 2 down years should be thank you enough
Well, it seems Klay disagreed.
And if GS could’ve cut him with no guaranteed money on the deal during that time they probably would have.
He earned that before the injuries in my opinion and the warriors should thank him for the rings.
well it’s Joe’s money and apparently he felt like Klay had been fairly compensated. Klay was dreaming that there was some 9 figure deal out there for him like he’s PG. He’s a 6th man at best and the warriors offered that to him fairly before the season so he could be a warrior 4 life but his stupid ego got in the way and he stained his legacy. hope he makes shots in DAL.
He’s so emotional. Apparently, he’s still upset about that offer and was determined to leave for less money. Mind boggling when he had a post playing lifetime contract with Warriors and a statue….. At least he’s going to a contender…
Have you ever heard of state tax? 48m in golden state is really like earning 15m.
Please review your facts. Tax is paid in each state you work in, as anyone who travels for work knows. Good accountants are paid to handle this and also find all the tax breaks that rich people enjoy. Taxation is never an actual issue for NBA players. This is just you inserting a political statement into a sports site.
Athletes have been vocal about taxation playing a part in where they decide to sign and I have no reason not to believe them. Paying tax in each state you work in is a big deal for a Pacific division team when 41 games are played at home and another 10 or whatever are played in-state, as well.
It’s called a jock tax and is taxed for the average amount per game. Some of the states in the west do not have a state tax at all, and those that do he can recoup the money when filing since his primary residence isn’t in those states. Since he’s moving from Cali to Texas, his primary residence would still apply. If he changes that to Texas, he drops the CA tax percentage, though federal is the chunk for everyone.
You are correct on the taxes paid in the state you perform the work, but that is only part of the equation. You are basically playing half your games in your home teams location, so state taxes on half your salary can vary wildly.
In addition to this, they pay ‘jock taxes’ based on the states in which each of their games are played. Teams playing more games in the Southeast face lower taxes due to a slightly unbalanced schedule over West Coast and Northeast teams.
One example easily found on the web equates the following salaries with regular rotational scheduling. Take home money for a $54 million contract in Dallas is roughly equivalent in to a $58 million salary in Boston, and it would take $63 million in LA to get the same take home.
That math above did not account for cost of living in said states. Players typically maintain in-season living arrangements in their teams homes state which is impacted by cost of living as well. It all depends on how much and on what they spend there, but it does vary as well (and California is crazy expensive on everything .. I know from travel).
When you factor it all in (even with California have huge tax loopholes for millionaires), he is probably coming out making less in Dallas per year, but not nearly as much as it sounds like. Not only that, he is playing for a team that is more capable of winning a championship (anything can happen, but lets keep it real).
Now, I will bring to light that marketing dollars in California, especially LA, could be worth more than some other markets, but I don’t have the numbers and there are so many factors there.
Long story short, there are a ton of factors in the money they make. Definitely agree with your state in which they work mantra, but it goes even deeper.
Texas doesnt have the Jock tax so it doesnt apply to Klay now.
The jock tax actually means it’s applied to every state the player plays in. But Klay will play more home games in Tx instead of Cali, so he does get a tax benefit, in spite of the “jock tax”.
Texas doesn’t have a state tax, which ‘is’ the jock tax. It’s called a jock tax because it represents the average paid per game of the contract vs. someone who works travels in between two states to make a living, such as NY/NJ. For Klay, he’ll pay less in taxes for the 41+ games.
True about each state, but when your home team is Texas, that’s immediately 41+ games within the state.
The + is coming from the SW teams, playing Houston and San Antonio.
You’re wrong here is the proof link to youtu.be
Over exaggerated about taxes because it comes out of the agents money too. Difference is less than 8% not 50% as the far right claims.
Klay is an emotional midget
Klay has 4 rings and has made hundreds of millions. I’m sure he would be unbothered by your statement.
not when devin booker said it though
Steve – just stop talking. There’s no way you think 50 million in Texas and 50 million in California are about the same. Thats unreal levels of stupidity and coping.
All the taxes even out.
Tax implications too.
He was going to come off the bench for the Warriors and will start for the Mavs.
then the Mavs are dumb
Texas doesnt have individual income tax and they dont have the “jock tax” which requires players to file in every state they play in. California meanwhile has the highest income tax level in the country at 13.3%. If its money your chidding him for, he made the best decision an athlete could make
Texas has no say in whether or not California charges a Texas resident “jock tax” for income earned for employment duties preformed within the borders of the state of California. Ask Jordan and the Bulls team that beat the Lakers in the finals about California Jock Tax. That was the first most people ever heard of it. When California sent those guys tax bills.
Don’t get me wrong, he saves a bunch of money playing in Texas, but California will still get it’s cut for the, idk, 8? games he will play there a season.
lol SAA. Couldn’t handle it huh boomer
That 2 for $48 ($24 AAV) in Cali after taxes will be $11 AAV, while the 3 for $50 ($16.7 AAV) in Tx will be $10 AAV, but Klay gets a 3rd year guaranteed.
So it’s really 2 for $22 or 3 for $30
SMH Wow you sure did flunk math. $24 million with a tax rate would be under 2.5 million not 13 million.
Josh Green is a great player. Why the Mavs let him go, is a head scratcher.
They had to for salary matching purposes I think.
But Grimes is a pretty solid Josh Green replacement tbh. Very similar players.
Long term it’s a bad move. But Mavs need a knockdown shooter short term. Especially with Kyrie throwing up bricks in the finals
So they grab a guy who hasn’t been able to hit a 3 in clutch for years now?
Great effort guy, above average defender but really not a smart player. Green, Hardy and THJ with the ball in their hands increase the admiration for Luka and Kyrie tenfold. Like a different sport.
So reality set in. Don’t think they’re the right team for him (or him for them), but time will tell.
Who are GSW getting from Charlotte??
Davis Bertans
The answer: 2 draft picks
I’ve got a 1/1 Klay card on eBay right now if anyone is interested graded 9.5 SGC
Great deal for Golden State, they can move on, they’re done owing Klay anything…. They can go after Ingram, Markanen, someone younger who can help Curry…If they can move Wiggins, I’d be impressed….
GP2’s money is too much for what he does too, would love to see him gone despite being a great guy off court.
Charlotte doing a good job of addressing issues on the wing. Dallas didn’t use him enough his first couple of years, which cost them multiple times
Dallas still needs help defensively on the wing, and possibly another option behind pj Washington defensively at the 4/smallball 5
Price was basically what I was saying yesterday; he’s a 16-22 million AAV guy now
Not much to add from the GS side until we see the return; everything else has already been said. As I said, I think there are things they can still do without him, but they also still need to address their issue at the 3/4 they’ve had since Otto Porter left/got hurt, as a complement to Wiggins/Kuminga/Draymond
That third year for Klay is a big deal considering his already pretty rapid decline. And if you look at that third year as a wash, that’s $50MM for 2 years. Not exactly cheap for someone who only gives you shooting and championship experience at this point, especially considering they had to give up Green who is slightly underrated due to his defensive contributions not popping up on the stat sheet and his small role on offense. Good get for the Hornets if they can get him to play more aggressively and with more confidence.
I’m fairly certain the Mavs couldn’t sign him outright, and a S&T requires a 3 year minimum. It’ll be interesting to see how they structure the money. I don’t believe they can afford to front load the contract, but they don’t want to be holding the bag in 2 years being unable to trade a Bertans-esque contract. How much can they legally put in the middle year to diminish the financial risk in the final year?
This is what I feel
Lakers offer $13 million MLE
You would be correct.
So the Warriors get a $16 million trade exception?
yes..Markennen salary:..16-18 mil. hmmmmm…
I’m a lakers fan since 1983. I will say this: Rob Pelinka is a disaster. When you let players play the G.M role, this is what you get. I’m angry and embarrassed.
He nailed the 2023 Trade deadline!
He didn’t have a choice but to do something.
Lakers we will trade you Vincent or Dlo but nobody else. Warriors ok goodbye…., that is why Thompson is not a laker.
Yeah but there one constant: Nobody wants to play with Lebron. Go back and look at all of the players we had before he demanded the davis trade. He blew all of those players out of here. Its a all star team bro. The players across the league know this Durant said it better when he said that nobody wants to play with bron because he determines the movement of the ball.
Not sure how it can be 3yr deal w/ final yr a player option. Sign-and-trades don’t allow for final season to be an option unless it’s the fourth yr
Or…, could Miles Bridges be part of this.., and coming to the Warriors?
Off the court issues aside he would be a MASSIVE upgrade on the roster. The dude can play. How they sell it to the fans is another story.
Have him get 25/10/5 opening night the fans will get a sudden case of amnesia
Dumbleavy with another dumb trade. Should have insisted on getting Lively
Funny Lively is untradeable from Dallas. Sounds like draft picks and trade accept ions coming to warriors.
“Warriors don’t want to take back any salary in the transaction?”
WHAT!!!?
Can’t believe Warriors are running it back and adding just a couple young guys to a team that did not make the playoffs. Horrible !!
Rebuilding
This offseason is a failure if we dont get Lauri or a big. Just repeating last year, where our lack of bigs was exposed constantly. Looks like more of watching Podz standing in the key getting switched on by a 6’9″ guy who dunks on him, same as last year…
Bring back the10th best team in the west would be a dump move since most teams in the west got better. The defense was horrible last year. Now they let go of 2 old players that lacked defense.
I think folks are underestimating the addition by subtraction angle of things here. That plus growth from the kids can help quite a bit.
Will they be contenders? Probably not. But I don’t see how they realistically could’ve accomplished that short of mortgaging the entire future for moves that would still not make them among the top few teams in the west.
Lauri is a pipe dream and who is this big you speak of? Market is thin after the biggest names came off the board. Valanciunas? He doesn’t play defense and isn’t a stylistic fit.
The reality is short of blowing things up or trading away all the young players (and, frankly, I’m skeptical they had significant value anyway), this was always going to be a rough offseason for the Warriors.
Didn’t Valanciunas already sign with the Wizards anyway?
The fact is, the Warriors are pretty well out of championship contention no matter what they do. They had an all-time run, but it’s over now. They can still be good, but they aren’t winning another ring with Steph/Draymond.
They’re most likely trying to get younger and faster via more trust in their young guys and a couple additions rather than trying to ram their heads into the same wall that stopped them the last two seasons.
Yeah, I just pointed that out for the folks who thought the money spent on Melton might’ve been better spent on him (since they’ll be making similar money this season). Not that this is the last move I expect the Warriors to make
GSW absolutely can still win a title with Curry and Kuminga leading the way. They can win a couple if Moody, TJD, Podz and Kuminga all play well in addition to Steph and Dray, and the front office puts the right guys around them. You underestimate how good the draft picks are already and can continue to improve and also how good Steph still is.
You need to find out what you have in Kuminga and Moody since they will be on their last year of their contracts.
wiggins and draymond missed significant time. Kuminga, Podz and Moody need to step up and play those minutes.
Well I dont know what you can’t understand. I said months ago that the main goal of GSW is going under the luxury tax does not matter what is the outcome of the team. Paul and Klay had to go with no return I said that here months ago- To complete my prediction they have to trade Wiggins for a couple of role players and that’s it. That’s all you’re gonna get for your Warriors. You need to accept that the window is close
Generally agree with this, but I do think there’s a smaller chance they trade Kuminga. Not because they don’t value him, but because there could be a big enough difference between how they value him internally vs how the market values him for them to pull the trigger.
Even though he played a lot better last season, particularly on offense, there are still questions about his defense, decision-making, and the lack of shooting doesn’t help. Still, given his offensive talent, I think there could be teams out there willing to pay a premium price to acquire him. If so, perhaps you see him dealt with the other young players would be retained.
They got 2 draft picks and De’Anthony Melton, so you were wrong there, that’s not “letting Klay and CP3 go with no return”.
Window’s open as long as Steph Curry is elite. You need to accept this fact.
I am tired when i j hear people claim Chris paul was let go for nothing. Nobody wanted Chris Paul for $30 million. He was a negative asset.
Exactly. Get Klay Thompson and CP3 off the books.
@davey J when I meant nothing I referred no salaries in return otherwise they going over the tax. And that means paying 6 figures plus for being repeating offenders, not gonna do that for a play-in team. Melton has nothing to do with Klay’s trade or Paul. As of right now they have between 12-15 mil more to add 2 or 3 players to the roster. And the window is closed not because of any Curry decay, the thing is this CBA agreement that cut any posibilities for the Warriors to truly compete. The best scenario is that next season is a transition and development year and in 25-26 they break the piggy bank and compete again with an expensive roster
Can’t wait to see how this blows up in the little mavs face. You’re not getting 28 year old Klay. Don’t get me wrong, I love Klay Thompson and think he WAS a really good player, but the acl and Achilles injuries have taken a toll. I live in the dfw area and have been listening to the radio talk show hosts on 105.3 the fan for the last couple of hours and they are pissing down their legs thinking this is a championship move. These are the same jokers that thought the mavs were going to beat the Celtics just three weeks ago.
If this was 28 Klay without the injuries he signs a ma deal with the warriors
Dude take a chill pill, Klay is coming at bench/role player salary, not at a star’s salary, so he is only one more piece, not the final piece, right?
I’m a lifelong dub nation member and watched Klay his entire career.
He isn’t cooked cooked, but in 2025 is a strict shooter-only type player and very mid defender if not trending poor. We don’t really know how bad he is, as he played at the 3 too much last year, and in 2025 he definitely is a strict SG who can get you 20-ish PPG on good %s but don’t expect anything else.
The defense was seriously poor last year, but it had been holding tight through 2022 and it really fell off a cliff in 2023 and 2024. He’s a nice guy to run out there when Luka needs a break and you need to score, and it will be fun to watch Klay+Kyrie ball out together. I don’t hate it, but there’s definitely 2 (or even 3) Klay Thompsons one can have (preinjury, postinjury but still chip-worthy, postinjury/no defense), and you aren’t getting the best one. Plus Luka/Kyrie/Klay is a very poor defensive trio, so there’s that too.
You’re mad because DFW radio guys are DFW homers?
Not sure I love the fit.
Wait, so the Hornets are getting Green for what will be a low 2nd round pick? That’s more than solid.
Mavs 2031 2nd could be decent but impossible to project at this point. One wonders why the Warriors even agreed to a S&T if this is the best they could get. Not that Klay is super valuable at this point, but I’d have wanted a bit more if I was going to help the Mavs. How did they not get at least something else from the Hornets, even if only another 2nd or two?
Well, there’s also the trade exception I guess; we’ll see if they eventually put it to good use. Still feels like they could’ve squeezed out a bit more from the Hornets.
Alright to sum it up but looks like the Warriors goal was to be totally rid of Klay’s money and Chris Paul’s money.
So that’s about 20 plus 30 which is around $50 million dollars off of last year’s books. Nothing new coming in.
Now the Warriors want to trade perhaps Andrew Wiggins and a young guy or two and try to improve the roster by including a first round pick or two to bring in a single guy that will help them up front.
Lauri Markennan would be very difficult to acquire because Ainge’s phone is ringing off the hook for him.
Will 16 million trade exception plus Andrew Wiggins bring in DeMar DeRozan? Zach Lavine? Not sure who else is out there.
Time to look at that updated top 50 free agent list.
To be continued…
So the Hornets get Green for a second rounder? Not bad.
Two 2nds; one to GSW and one to Mavs
meanwhile Lebron is crying because nobody wants to play with him.
This is a good place for him. He will get plenty looks. Plus I think it’s a fair contract. Good for Klay ……. not a Mavs fan. But I’ll root for Klay !!!!
Imo Mavs will miss Jones. Lakers should go after him.
Good off-season for Mavs with what they have…now if Doncic drops 20 pounds at least they might get back to the finals
2 out of 5 staters playing above average defence won’t cut it…
Mavs are gonna miss Derrick Jones Jnr…
