The Nets attended a Monday workout in Las Vegas for guard Killian Hayes, Erik Slater of Clutch Points tweets.
Hayes, a 2020 lottery pick, was waived by the Pistons after the trade deadline last season and has remained a free agent. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.9 assists in 42 games last season but shooting woes led to him losing his starting spot before he was cut loose. Hayes has shot 38.2% from the field in his career and 27.7% on 3-point tries.
We have more on the Nets:
- Cameron Johnson is entering the second year of a four-year, $94.5MM contract. In the wake of the Mikal Bridges trade, Johnson is uncertain about the front office’s plans for him, stating to the New York Post’s Brian Lewis that he’s “still trying to figure it out.” If the Nets retain him, Johnson says he’s excited by the youthful roster. “I think we have a pretty good group in Brooklyn that we can really start to grow something,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of talent in the building. … If I’m staying in Brooklyn, then I’m all-in, excited to play, excited to grow this group, and that’s where my head’s at right now.”
- Management plans to stay below the tax line until the Nets becomes competitive again. “Us not being in the tax this year was by design,” general manager Sean Marks said, per Lucas Kaplan of NetsDaily.com. “We don’t plan on being in there, and we’ll kept that future flexibility and make sure when it’s the right time, we’ve got an ownership group, like Joe (Tsai), who has shown the capacity to go in and pay tax when we’re competitors, when we’re really gonna contend for a championship. So that in our back pocket is vital, too.”
- In case you missed it, the Nets made re-signing Nic Claxton a priority this offseason and believe he could become the league’s premier defender. Get the details here.
I feel like there would be a few teams in on Cam Johnson, but he would be perfect in Miami
Would you give up Duncan, Jovic, Mia 2029 1st (top8 protected) & a 2030 pick swap for Cam Johnson?
I actually might in a bigger deal, but I have to be moving Herro and/or Rozier…I could also see some sort of deal where maybe the Heat get Ingram and New Orleans gets Cam Johnson, but again, I could see a few teams being in on him as well (I prefer Cam Johnson)
I gotta be honest I’m not nearly as high on Cam Johnson as you are. Id def rather have BI than him (tho both guys were pretty disappointing for Team USA last summer). If Brooklyn can get Duncan, Jovic, a 1st & a pick swap for Cam id call that a big W for them. NOP def don’t need him, they already got a better, younger version of him in Trey Murphy. I do sorta see Cam as a nice fit in Mia tho. He’s got similar qualities as Caleb Martin & Duncan Robinson. I think Jovic would be a better fit in Brooklyn than Miami too tbh. Herro would fit even better in BK than Jovic tho. If I’m the Nets I would leap at the chance to acquire Herro for Cam Johnson. I’d prob even throw in my guy Dennis Schroeder.
I would want multiple assets to ever consider Schroder
Cam johnson is on a team friendly contract, and doesn’t need the ball in his hands. Which makes him preferable for the Heat than Ingram. Also, they wouldn’t be able to match salaries for Ingram, after NO moved Daniels and Nance to Atlanta, unless they moved both herro, rozier, duncan etc for Ingram and CJ, or in some sort of 3 team deal like I mentioned
NO could actually use Cam Johnson, if they lose Ingram b/c he plays the 4/3, which is an area they could use a depth piece at, and Murphy is a 3/4. He fits well with Herb Jones and/or Zion, and Murphy…and Dejonte really, and doesn’t need the ball, as I said, and spaces the floor and defends
Most preferable deal for the Heat would be Herro for Cam
I agree Cam Johnson don’t need the ball in his hands, he can chill in the corner & knock down c&s treys at a pretty good rate. Other than that he’s pretty much replacement level or less but his 1 plus skill is obv very important. Whether he’s on a team friendly deal is debatable. I wouldn’t wanna be on the hook for 3yrs $60+M to him. Dorian Finney-Smith is similar player, same position, teammates, etc & id call his deal much more team friendly. And that’s why I’d jump at the chance to keep him & trade Cam, especially if I could get a guy like Herro back. It’s a little crazy to me that you’d give up Herro for Cam Johnson tbh.
As far as the Pels you just named 3 forwards that are all younger & better than him & he still has $60M left on his deal. Pels would be much smarter to put that capital toward a big (Daniel Theis & the 4th best rookie big are their current best options). And let’s remember that the reason we say Cam Johnson “doesn’t need” the ball in his hands is bc he’s simply not capable of creating offense with the ball in his hands. Guys like BI, Herro & even Rozier are more valuable players bc they can make plays with the dribble.
Cam Johnson is a connector on offense, and can defend his positions. He is normally positive 9n the floor. He is a much better and more consistent shooter than DFS, who is a good player and better defender, but not as good offensively. I also like DFS to do different things, though the Heat brought back Highsmith on ridiculously cheap rate, and the better shooting fits really strongly with Jimmy and Bam.
I would prefer to not have had to give up Herro for Cam Johnson, but the Heat did this to themselves after the Lowry trade, and have to move Herro/Rozier
Again, he is also on a team friendly deal, so that matters as well. I’m not even sure Brooklyn would even do either of those things
How do you figure Cam is on a team friendly deal? I wouldn’t consider Obi Toppin’s new contract (4yrs $60M) to be team friendly yet he’s pretty much better than Cam in every way plus Cam (3yrs $68M) has a much bigger contract. DeAndre Hunter isn’t on what id call a team friendly deal yet he’s definitely better than Cam in every way & they got similar deals. I’m pretty certain they’d be ok with getting a young all-star level guard in return for Cam but Miami def won’t have to give up Herro for him. Duncan Robinson plus Jovic plus a 1st plus a swap would def be more than enough to me & the $ matches almost exactly. To me Cam Johnson is much better as a team’s 3rd forward tho. You don’t wanna be starting this guy at the 4 bc of defense/rebounding concerns. He’d def be the worst starting 4 in the division. But (much like Schroeder has been the best backup pg in the league since he was drafted) Cam is prob 1 of the best backup forwards in the league & Mia could use his shooting/an upgrade from Duncan.
I was gonna let the Dennis Schroeder comment slide lol but what? You’d need multiple assets to take Schroeder? Do you think he sucks or something? Do the Heat have pgs better than him that idk about lol?
Cam Johnson is a overpaid, not team friendly, overrated SF pretending to be a PF, sixth man at best lol. Cam Johnson doesn’t fit in Miami. Sankara is right . Bro please stop. You are always wrong
Again..Cam Johnson literally went to the NBA finals playing the 4/3
Monte Williams somewhere wants to put Hayes and Livers together again
