A report last week from Michael Scotto of HoopsHype indicated that the Clippers had sign-and-trade interest in free agent point guard Tyus Jones.
However, Law Murray of The Athletic (Twitter links here) has heard differently, stating the team was “never” focused on the 28-year-old, and with Kris Dunn coming aboard, L.A. is no longer viewed as even a long-shot destination for Jones. According to Murray, the Clips are not interested in Jones “in any capacity.”
As Murray explains, the Clippers always planned to acquire Dunn, it just took a few weeks to come together. Murray suggests the rumor may have come from Jones’ camp, as he’s still seeking a new contract nearly three weeks into free agency.
Here’s more from the Pacific:
- In part due to his strong play as a rookie and in part due to his team-friendly contract, which will pay him $3.5MM, $3.7MM and $5.7MM over the next three seasons, Brandin Podziemski holds more value to the Warriors than he would to most other teams, as Anthony Slater of The Athletic writes. “I think I can get (to an All-Star level),” Podziemski has said. “I’m never gonna just settle for being a role player.” Shams Charania of The Athletic recently reported that Podziemski’s potential inclusion in a deal for Lauri Markkanen has been a sticking point in negotiations between Golden State and Utah. According to Slater, Podziemski isn’t off limits in trade talks, but the Warriors place a high value on what he brings to the table, both in the short and long term.
- Former Nuggets guard Collin Gillespie landed with the Suns on a two-way deal this summer. He views Phoenix as a “really good opportunity” to earn minutes at point guard, he told Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic. “I feel like I’m an elite shooter,” Gillespie said. “I can run the point guard position really well, get guys shots, especially the guys who I’ll be playing with (Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal). They’re elite scorers. Just find them in spots for them to score and have the best opportunity to help us win.”
- Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports takes an in-depth look at Gillespie’s game, exploring the 25-year-old’s strengths and weaknesses and discussing whether it’s reasonable to expect the former Villanova standout to play rotation minutes in 2024/25.
GSW increasing Podz trade value – NICE.
If after watching all these Aingeheads on here talk a big game about him getting 2 young stars and 4 first rounders for Lauri, if MDJ can talk Ainge down to Podz and 1 first for Lauri, then we all gotta start taking notice that MDJ is a potentially elite GM!
Davey?? What?? Podski and “A” 1st for Lauri??
Give Me One Reason you think Danny Ainge would make that deal. I’ll give you 10 years to come up with a good reason. After 10 years the case is closed. Here’s a tip and I’ll save you a decade, you won’t find one.
Lauri is going to sign a extension with the Jazz. He is a good player but not a player you build around like Kuminga and Podz. Podz will be a allstar some day.
Podziminski is a nice complimentary player and might make sense as a solid 6th man or starter on a team that doesn’t need their Point Guard to do too much but he will never be anywhere near the player Markannen is.
As far as Kuminga? Maybe, just maybe if he starts showing some consistency he might turn into the level of player Markannen is now.
markanen is not a winner. Played on 3 bad teams and traded twice. Never been to the playoffs. 7 footer and cant average more than 10 rebounds a game. He is not a player that so far not shown he can lead a team to the playoffs. Scoring on bad teams is easy since they are always behind. Let’s see what he can do under real pressure.
Markkanen is a scorer, not a rebounder or rim protector. He’ll get you 8 rebs, 1 block in 36 mins.
Love his scoring, he’d help us, but he comes with a reputation as SOFT.
Cleveland went 44-38 in Markannen’s lone season with the Cavs. In both seasons he’s been in Utah they were competitive until they decided to shut him down. There’s lots of 7 footers that don’t average 10 boards although he did average over 8 in both seasons in Utah. I’ll admit that Lauri isn’t a franchise player for a contending team but he’d make a great second option.
As a starter Podz couldn’t average double figure scoring with Curry drawing most of the attention. When he started he also shot below league average from the field and from deep. He played decent off the bench for a rookie that was the 19th pick though.
the lone season with the cavs he only scored 14 points a game with less than 6 rebounds. He is a good complementary player on a team with 2 other stars. Not all star stats.
Podz went from a G league player to all rookie team in the same year. Only 21 and will get better. Now he takes over Thompson spot.
Toad , Are you getting your analysis from Davey J? Podziemski was a 20 year old and won the starting job. His instructions were to support Steph, not take Steph’s shots, which he succeeded at, spectacularly:
2023-24 +/- :
Klay Thompson : +7
Jonathan Kuminga: +126
Brandin Podziemski: +264
Draymond Green: +173
Steph Curry: +189
If you’re building around podz and kuminga… yikes
Better than what the jazz is building around just a bunch of spare part pieces.
Agree, Podz will have a better career than Markkanen. (Markkanen was mediocre in his first 5 years, so the bar isn’t that high.)
The only justification for including Podz in the trade is to maximize Steph’s last few years.
Podz is a poor man’s Austin Reaves. Markannen is a poor man’s Chris Bosh.
Podz defense is better than Reeves. Reeves can’t rebound. Podz is more like Caruso than Reeves.
Honestly Podz has only been in the league for just a year and it looks like he can play in a lot lineups.
So I can see why the Warriors would want to keep him on his rookie contract. I’d def keep him over Kuminga.
Yeah, I definitely understand why the Warriors want to keep him. It’s not necessarily that they believe he’ll be an All-Star one day (as some believe) but the whole point of bringing Lauri aboard is being able to win now, and keeping Podz would be a big part of that with his versatility and bargain contract. If you get Lauri and lose Podz, it’s still a net gain but losing what he brings to the table hurts. Not surprising to see the Warriors doing everything they can to make a deal happen without him.
Finally, a comment that makes sense. This guy gets it.
Not surprising. Davey J is back on talking about how much he wants to get rid of Podz, for some reason. Comparing him to Chris Chiozza is really bizarre. Markkanen is not getting traded for just Podz and a 1st. That is a ridiculous belief
My final offer for Markanen would be Podz, Santos, a 1st, a 2nd, and the rights to Nico Mannion. Take it or leave it, Ainge.
Ainge would just hang up if Dunleavy gave him that ultimatum.
Warriors fans delusional like always
Ainge is delusional if he thinks Lauri is worth 5 draft picks and 3 young players. Be lucky if he got 2 draft picks and 1 young player
It has nothing to do with being delusional or not. He’s only going to move Lauri right now for a king’s ransom, so might as well ask for a king’s ransom. If he doesn’t get moved, Ainge will extend him and look to deal him down the line. Patience is a virtue and Ainge has plenty of it.
I think the media over played how much the warriors want him. They made an offer around Moody and Ainge countered with another crazy offer. In the end he signs extension with Jazz.
In the end the media is overplaying how much the Jazz want to trade Markkanen. There’s no need to rush into a trade for Moody and picks.
Moody is most likely going to be a depth piece that plays in garbage time or if something unfortunate happens to Curry, Wiggins, Podz, Hield, Melton, Anderson and Payton.
They can trade Markannen at anytime and get a better return as long as doesn’t sign his extension after Aug 6th.
He will sign a extension because the Jazz dont have much to build around right now and they have enough draft picks in the future. Warriors are not going to trade draft picks because in 3 years Curry will be hanging it up or about to hang it up.
