The Pistons, Timberwolves, Grizzlies, and Raptors have folded a series of separate trade agreements into a single four-team trade, which is now official, the Wolves announced today in a press release.
The Pistons and Timberwolves initially agreed to a deal sending Minnesota’s Wendell Moore to Detroit in exchange for a second-round pick swap, with the Pistons moving up from No. 53 to No. 37.
The Wolves subsequently traded the No. 53 pick to Memphis in exchange for No. 57 and a future second-rounder. Then Minnesota traded No. 57 to Toronto for a reported $1MM in cash.
The end result is as follows:
- Pistons acquire Moore and the draft rights to Bobi Klintman (No. 37 pick).
- Timberwolves acquire a future second-round pick (from Grizzlies) and cash ($1MM; from Raptors).
- Grizzlies acquire the draft rights to Cam Spencer (No. 53 pick).
- Raptors acquire the draft rights to Ulrich Chomche (No. 57 pick).
The Pistons are taking a chance on an inexpensive former first-rounder in Moore ($2.54MM salary in 2024/25) while having moved up in the second round to select a prospect higher on their draft board; the Wolves, who are operating over the second apron, save some money while having swapped out their No. 37 pick for a future second-rounder; and the Grizzlies and Raptors gave up minor assets to trade into the back end of the second round of the draft.
The one missing detail is here is which future second-round pick the Grizzlies are sending Minnesota. We’ll update our tracker of 2024 offseason trades with that information once it’s reported.
Speaking of the Pistons taking a chance. Why did they sign Tobias Harris for $52M? No one was after him. Who were they bidding against? And that’s why the Pistons have been the worst team in the NBA for the last 15 years.
Are you sure no one was after Harris? He dependable. Plays his role well and can knock a few threes. He’s also a good locker room presence.
2 years at $26 million per isn’t that bad in today’s NBA economy. There’s a cap and a floor, gotta spend the cap space somewhere. They’ll just flip him for a late first at this or the next deadline.
Of course he’s not sure. Just because he didn’t hear about it, suddenly he’s not wanted. It’s hilariously funny.
Saying “no one was after Tobias Harris” is just flat out wrong. Was he extremely overpaid as a max player? Yes. But he isn’t some scrub. Everyone would like to have a Tobias Harris on their team.
“OVERPAID AS A MAX PLAYER”
??
Tobias is not a Max player. 26m/year is roughly half of what a max player yearly salary is. It’s not 52m/a year. It’s 26m x 2 years = 52m
People freaking out about Tobias contract are simply casuals. The average NBA player salary is now close to $11 million.
The average NBA starter salary is over $20m.
Paying a proven 17pt+/gm scorer who fits your team’s need almost perfectly is not an overpay at $26m/yr, barely over the average starters’ salary.
Captain said “was”, referring to his max deal in Philly.
Bros just mad because he’s not on his spurs
Just because YOU didn’t hear anything doesn’t mean a damn thing. It hilarious you actually think all deals somehow get leaked. He was definitely offered 1 yr deals he wanted a multi year deal & yes they had to overpay a bit to get him here. It’s a good contract to have expiring in 2026 which they can move for assets. Langdon added a veteran who can score & take pressure off of Cade. The new Pistons GM knows what he’s doing but apparently you think you know more. Laughable
Timberwolves really put in work to not have to pick in the second round this year.
