The reigning champion Celtics are taking a flier on free agent combo forward Ron Harper Jr., having signed the former Raptors two-way player to a non-guaranteed training camp deal, per Keith Smith of Spotrac (Twitter link).
After going undrafted out of Rutgers in 2022, the 6’4″ wing signed a two-way deal with Toronto, appearing in nine games during his rookie season. He agreed to a second two-way deal for 2023/24, as well, but was waived last December after appearing in just one contest for the Raptors.
All told, the 24-year-old has played in 10 NBA contests thus far, averaging 2.0 points on 50% field goal shooting, plus 0.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists a night.
He had a far more prolific role with the Raptors 905, Toronto’s G League affiliate. Harper averaged 16.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per night on .501/.366/.776 shooting.
Harper evidently impressed Boston enough with his play on the team’s Summer League roster this month to earn a more extended look.

Dylan Harper is a stud; but for the matter, so is Ace Bailey. Either of them, of Cooper Flagg, could go #1 in next year’s NBA draft.

Dylan’s brother, RHJ, was the face of RU basketball while he was there, especially that half court shot to beat #1 Purdue at the buzzer. If Dylan is that much of a superior talent to his brother along with Ace Bailey, the Scarlet Knights are going to be shocking a lot of top teams this year.
Aye we got somebody that actually knows Ron Harper Jr! It’s hard for me to straight up say Dylan is a superior talent than his brother but he def has a better NBA body & is more athletic. Jr had a game that was more suited to the college game tbh. I love his game, he reminded me of TJ Warren in that he was just a born scorer that could score anywhere on the court in a multitude of ways. He just was never gonna be a #1 option in the league like he was at Rutgers. Dylan on the other hand is a much better pro prospect bc of his positional size & more versatile game. Whole Big10 is gonna be next season tho, I’m hype to see if Rutgers can rise all the way to the top with their blue chip freshmen.

I really like them both too yet it is gonna be hard to make this team. We don’t have much room. But I believe I got your point that although Stevens likes Ron Harper Jr. part of his thinking may be about getting an edge on his brother. I will watch for Dylan.
Harper isn’t going to make the team, Watson on a two way and they’re done.
They still have a roster spot open traditionally they keep a roster spot open but they have from time to time kept a non guaranteed player who they can waive by the end of the december
