The Jazz continue to listen to trade offers for Lauri Markkanen, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe (subscriber link), who hears from sources who say the Heat are among the teams interested in the star forward.
As Lowe writes, Markkanen’s situation is complicated because he’s on a below-market contract that will pay him $18MM in 2024/25, which is the final season of his contract. That makes a standard contract extension – which can’t start above 40% of his current salary – unlikely. Rival teams may not be willing to give up a major haul of assets with no guarantees that the 27-year-old would stick around beyond next season.
Utah could potentially get more value in return for Markkanen in several months if the team renegotiates and then extends his contract. However, that scenario is also tricky.
As Marc Stein details (Substack link), Markkanen becomes eligible for a renegotiation and extension on August 6, but he won’t be trade-eligible for six months if he signs a new deal. That means if he signs the extension on the first day he’s eligible to, he would only be eligible to be traded for one day during the season: February 6, the day of the deadline. If the extension is signed on August 7 (or later), Markkanen would not be eligible to traded during the upcoming season.
While it’s not surprising that the Heat have shown interest in the Finnish star, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald casts doubt (via Twitter) on the feasibility of the team actually acquiring him. As Jackson notes, Utah has placed a high asking price in previous talks with Miami, which lacks future first-round picks to offer.
One team interested in Markkanen seems confident that he’ll eventually be traded, per Stein. Utah’s own 2025 first-round pick is top-10 protected, so the Jazz could be incentivized to tank ahead of a strong draft class. Utah has also struggled to acquire a second star to build the roster around him.
Here are some more trade rumors from around the NBA:
- The Kings appear to be the frontrunner to acquire DeMar DeRozan in a sign-and-trade with the Bulls, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who made the comments on SportsCenter (Twitter video link; hat tip to RealGM). However, Wojnarowski said a third team would likely to be need to be involved to absorb salaries, as Chicago is reluctant to add to its payroll. A six-time All-Star, DeRozan remains the top free agent left on the market.
- According to Lowe, the trade market for Hawks point guard Trae Young “is as chilly as it has ever been.” Sources tell Lowe that the Spurs and Lakers — two teams linked to Young — haven’t expressed much recent interest in the three-time All-Star. Lowe says San Antonio appears unmotivated to help Atlanta regain control of its own first-round picks in a deal for Young.
- Lowe hears rumors of Darius Garland potentially requesting a trade from the Cavaliers following Donovan Mitchell‘s extension have “quieted,” which confirms a report from his ESPN colleague Brian Windhorst. According to Lowe’s sources, the Cavs are still on the hunt for a 3-and-D wing, with Nets forwards Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith worth monitoring, though Cleveland only has one tradable first-round pick (2031). Stein has also heard that center Jarrett Allen will likely be difficult to acquire after Kenny Atkinson was hired as head coach, which means the Cavs could have the same core together entering next season.
According to rumors, Warriors want both Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler.
What does it mean?
Jazz can take away all the available players below age 30 and all future picks (not swaps).
Where did you hear that from? Ok, let’s figure this one out………

THERRRE we go
You think markannen is goin for 2 firsts and kuminga and moody after what bridges got in a trade? And Danny ainge controls markannens trade market, trippin fellow NBA enthusiast
I don’t think the Jazz would want to bring back that many players. Would need to add a third team to give the Jazz draft assets instead.
I’m admittedly a fair weather Hawks fan…but why would the Spurs consider trading back those picks when it’s looking like the Hawks will be even worse the next couple of seasons making those picks higher? Are they protected picks at all?
They’d consider it bc they’d be getting a young, HOF level pg in return. But I sorta rather we just keep Trae now that we’ve traded Dejounte. I def would’ve traded Trae instead but this team should actually be better than the last few seasons if we can stay relatively healthy. Jalen Johnson’s emergence into a star is something that people really should see coming at this point. And obv that’s gonna raise our ceiling.
Trae young a HoF level pg, thanks for the laugh
Trae Young is a liability on defense. He cannot be played in big situations bc he will be hunted.
HOF? LOL. He shoots deep 3s, that is about it.
He’s definitely a liability on defense. The rest of what you said is obv ridiculous.
With the exception of Holiday or White almost every PG in the league is targeted on defense.
And Trae himself has victimized both of those 2 guys repeatedly, esp Jrue
He’s also supposed to be some great shooter, yet hasn’t come close to 50% fg’s, never above 40% from 3, and only one above 90 on ft’s. The fact that you’re still trying to defend calling him hof level is comical
HOF level is hyperbole but Trae’s one of the hardest players in the league to defend. He’s not an elite shooter but you can’t leave him open. If you get in his grill he’ll blow by you or hit the open man.
I make open threes at LA Fitness. Call me HoF next please! Lmao
I don’t even think I ever tried to defend calling him a HOF level guy. There would obv be no need to defend that lol. I gotta ask, how often have you watched Trae play basketball? Like full NBA games that he’s played in. If you can name any specific games you’ve seen that would be perfect. I ask bc it’s clear that you either haven’t seen him play much, if at all, or you just don’t understand basketball. Or maybe you just hate him personally and are letting your emotions cloud your judgement. Either way you’re wrong lol. Trae Young is very obviously an elite level NBA player and if you google Trae Young salary that might be a hint as to what I mean by elite
He’s so elite that literally no one wants to trade for him. Sometime your takes are ok but the love for Trae clouds a lot of your statements. A really good facilitator who can score on a huge contract/liabilty defensively. Hawks should’ve kept Murray.
Lol man y’all are a trip. Im not a big Trae Young either, I rather we would kept DJ. But it is very very obvious that Trae is extremely elite as far as basketball players go. Is that not obvious to y’all? This is a perfect example of why I have no respect for you guys. The fact that Trae is elite should be very obvious to even someone who vaguely understands the game. Even for guys like y’all that only read the stats I mean that makes it even more clear how elite he is lol. Allow yourself to appreciate greatness, I promise you’ll enjoy the game way more. Obv he’s not good at all defensively and that hurts his team but I promise he’s not the first guy who this has been the case with. Go check out guys like Isiah, Nash & Tim Hardaway & see what they had accomplished at the same age as Trae. It’s very obvious that he’s on his way to the HOF. Y’all gotta chill on letting your emotions cloud your logic. And why do y’all hate the boy so much anyway lol
He’s an explosive player and gets teammates involved, but he isn’t very efficient. To me, he’s one of those “best player on a bad team” type players
Lol ok so I guess the same exact things are true about Tyrese Haliburton? Except that he’s not as explosive, right?… If Trae Young is inefficient then like 95% of all NBA pgs have been inefficient lol, including many of the ones in the HOF
Yeah, poor Jrue. Hope he’s recovered.
Plus they drafted two guards (Castle and Nuñez) and hired another one in Chris Paul.
Unprotected.
And it’s simply part of the lazy narrative that “The Spurs need an upgrade at PG to pair with Wemby”. Problem is the team isn’t going to want to acquire a turnstile on defense, he’s a bad culture fit, isn’t a great it offensively given his heliocentric nature and questionable shot selection, and is an overrated shooter. Even ignoring the picks, I don’t think the Spurs would interested at the presumably high asking price.
Markkanen makes sense for warriors. Derozen to kings and maybe pistons help facilitate the trade.
No allstar wants to go to lakers yet lakers don’t wanna trade for Trae Young? What a stubborn franchise!
Bulls payroll now is at $158 million.
Pistons payroll now is at $100 million
Kings payroll now is at $162 million
Kings don’t want to add more than $10 million payroll
Kings need to send $25 million payroll to Pistons
Huerter + Lyle = 25 million
Bulls want Huerter, could be fourth team involved to send Vucevic and make a room for Huerter
And I don’t know that? Kings actually want to unload both Huerter and Harrison Barnes.
Kings want to send out Barnes and Huerter
So Huerter stays with Chicago and they flip Barnes to Detroit for 2nd Rd pick ?
Heat trade proposal is not competitive
Herro, Jaquez, 2029 First, 2031 First for Lauri and Clarkson
Heat have 2 future Firsts
Warriors have 3 future Firsts
That’s not bad as a starting point. It’s basically Herro for Clarkson. The Jazz would be doing the Heat a favor for taking on that big contract, in a way.
The Heat would need to add more for Markkanen to be involved.
Sounds like Arturas has the green light to rebuild, but only if costs are kept low, which is very Reinsdorf. The Bulls should be concerned only with maximizing returns at this point, but the old man doesn’t care about winning. It’s always pocketbook with Jerry. Dollar Bill Wirtz has been replaced by Dollar Jerry.
Pistons will absorb salary for a first rounder.
Unprotected First for Pistons and Bulls may also want a protected First
Utah gets- Trae Young
Atl gets- Collin Sexton, Brice Sensabaugh, Cle’s 2025 1st & a 2029 1st
link to m.youtube.com
Why would Utah want Trae? They still want to rebuild and probably want to tank next year as well.
This is yr3 of their rebuild coming up & they continue to look like 1 of the worst teams in the West. How long should their rebuild last in your opinion? At some point you have to try to win. Their best player is about to be a unrestricted free agent next summer. If they wanna keep him happy seems like this would be the exact type of move they’d wanna make. Trae is very familiar with John Collins as well & both of those guys had their best seasons playing together. Also there’s the fact that Trae is locked up long term already & he’s the type of talent that rarely picks to come to Utah in free agency. They’d obv still have plenty of future draft picks.
Remember when ATL tried to win and traded for Murray/signed Trae to the extension? How did that work out? Danny isn’t going to be rushed into mediocrity.
Lol wait, so your argument is that bc a different team didn’t have success after a big trade the Jazz shouldn’t make a big trade? You really are kidding lol bc that’s extremely weird logic. Danny rushed from perennial contention to a level slightly below mediocrity right after the Rudy/Spida trades & Utah has been stuck there for a few yrs now. There’s not really much light to be seen at the end of their tunnel either, esp with Lauri’s impending free agency. A path out of that slightly below mediocre level is definitely something they should be looking for…
And as far as the Dejounte experiment tbh the Hawks really lost nothing at all out of that bargain… Instead of our own 1st rd picks in 2025 & 2027 we have LAL’s (25) & Mil’s (27). Along with that exchange of picks we have to swap our 1st with SAS in 26 if they have a better record than us. For that minimal haul we got 2 seasons of Dejounte playing at an all-star level on a very team friendly deal & going forward we have Dyson Daniels & Larry Nance. Obv Dejounte as a 2 next to Trae didn’t work but upgrading from Kev to Dejounte was obv a move in the right direction. Especially considering the fact that we got a 1st for Kev too. Hopefully going from Dejounte to Dice (less ball dominant, even better/stronger/bigger defensively) is even more of a step in the right direction. But no matter what shakes out for Atl, Utah needs to start making some winning moves sooner than later.
Rebuilds take longer than 3 years, teams that try to rush it often end up having to blow it up and start over again. The Hawks are a prime example of this. Trae & Lauri does not make the Jazz contenders, Ainge knows this. And as for the “perennial contention” can you tell me how many playoff series those teams won?
The next 2 draft years are supposed to be amazing … I could see UTA loading up to see what they have now and in the next two years. Plus, UTA will probably never go over the cap unless they have a championship caliber team so they don’t want to get locked down by any bad rookie extensions.
Also why I don’t think UTA was Kuminga tbh.
If they’re not giving up Markannen I’d be happy with that trade. I’d hate losing Sexton but Trae gives gives them a star to pair with Markkanen that’s on his timeline.
Utah doesn’t necessarily want to continue to rebuild, they’ve got a lot of quality young players. If anything I think they should consolidate some picks and talent for more established players.
I’m not really even particularly high on any of their young players except Sensabaugh & Isaiah Collier tbh. I like Keyonte & Kessler to an extent but both more as nice role players than guys with all-star type potential
Every good team needs nice role players, especially with All-Star potential. Cody Williams will take a little time but I think he’ll be a good one as well. I’m taking a wait and see approach on Filipowski.
I dig that. I’m saying for a team that has spent the past few yrs rebuilding they don’t really have an especially strong stable of young prospects. In their division alone id say Minny, OKC & Portland have better young guys.
Trae is not the kind of player Danny Ainge would give up assets for,Trae doesn’t really move the needle, Utah is not a contender with him and his salary is prohibitive. Danny would rather stay the course.
Terrible deal.. did you read that Utah’s 2025 is top 10 protected? This is the year to tank in a really good top heavy draft. With all their young guys it’s time to develop, retool and possible resign Lauri.
Ok so you would use this season to tank for the 3rd season in a row. Then after you lose Lauri in free agency (unlikely he’d want to resign with the franchise that wasted his prime) you’ll have one of the youngest teams in the league & most likely miss playoffs again, 4th yr in a row. This team can’t just suck forever. Especially with Rudy & Spida thriving elsewhere, it’s time for Utah to rejoin the league. If they wanted to keep their pick in the 2025 draft so bad then they shouldn’t have tanked so shamelessly a few months ago.
They only half tanked the last couple years. We want them to actually tank this year, no matter what happens to Markkanen.
Then just a few more yrs of full tanking & they’ll be ready to contend around 2030 right
By “we” I assume you mean the fans. I’ve been a fan of the Jazz since the Days of Stockton and Malone. “We” may have never won a championship but “we’ve” been one of the most successful regular season franchises for close to 40 seasons. In that time span only once have The Jazz had three losing seasons in a row. They’ve been to the playoffs 32 of those 40 seasons.
I’m done waiting, I don’t expect them to be a championship contender next season but if they can acquire an established elite talent to run out there with Markannen next season they should do so. They can have the first round pick.
I didn’t say this, a professional NBA writer did, but Podziemski+3 firsts for Lauri gets done and is a nice move for both sides.
GSW with Lauri might win a ring if no one gets hurt!!!
Wait until the off season and sign him as a free agent.
Warriors can’t do that for salary matching reasons. Podz makes nothing.
The Fischer comment you’re referring to was just him mentioning some of the assets that Utah would ask for in talks from Golden State, not definitively stating that’s what it would take to get it done.
Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: F Cam Johnson, G Austin Reaves, F Rui Hachimura
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: PG Darius Garland, G/F Caris LeVert
Brooklyn Nets Receive: PG D’Angelo Russell, SG Jalen Hood-Schifino, F/C Christian Wood, 2029 first-round pick via Lakers
I like this ….. works for everyone.
Good idea of a trade!
Not seeing how that works for the Nets or Cavs. Nets have been down the path before with DLo and the Cavs already have an AR in Straus. Garland can fetch them better and more. Garland on the right team can be a star.
Cavs GM would be laughing at that trade. Nets is getting ripped off big time all they get is a 1st round pick and a expensive PG with 2 bench players. Nobody owes the Laker free players
Works well for Cleveland, even though they get stuck with Hachimura…he could just play smallball 5 off the bench, or be useful as a scoring 4
Brooklyn probably could use an extra asset, considering Hood-Schifino’s value being down+his injury+taking back D’Angelo
Not sure this ultimately helps the Lakers, without them doing other things, even though they get rid of stuff they don’t need/don’t want…it depends on what lineups they would go to, the same way it was an issue the last couple of years
Pretty good old school trade based on basketball fit, with the talent pretty equal on all sides. Problem is teams almost never do these type of deals any longer. Today trade demands and contract situations are the things that drive deals.
Other than that, I think CLE does pretty good assuming they believe DM is best utilized as primarily a PG. LAL would have to be willing to take on DG’s max deal, already having two super-max’s. BKN would have to be willing to accept a single FRP in 2029 for Cam Johnson. All plausible.
To be fair, that’s a lot for the Lakers to give up to only get Garland and Lavert. Reaves is bigger and nearly as productive as Garland. They also rarely ever give up first round picks.
Garland’s D is substantially better than all in that deal. Sprinkle in his shooting and he’s beyond all of them.
Great… just keep sending more and more Klutch players to the lakers. LA did draft a new white guy so I guess Reaves is expendable.
Good trade proposal but I pass if I’m the Lakers
Think Brooklyn would want a little more as well
Cle makes out nice there tho
Definitely one of the more reasonable 3 teamers floated around here
The king of rebuild trading for a defensive liability , destroying his cap(which he traded Mitchell and gobert) to be right back where he was (with a worse #1 guy). Makes zero sense. Utah is rebuilding and the year before last was a surprise good season. This year he offloads guys and adds to his stockpile of picks. They drafted 3 guards the past 2 years. I’d rather have collier on a rookie deal and tanking vs Trae in a loaded west. @sankra I appreciate your passion but all your takes are wild. Your like a rich man’s vs of Sullivan
Goes to show how broad the spectrum really is.
It’s a rumored trade ……
Nets get cap relief. Plus another pick in a deep draft. I’d say a quick retool for them. Plus have many picks they can use for a young stud.
Cavs get their SF. Who is a 2way guy that can shoot. Plus Reaves. Imo DM can play some point. So it’s really like a combo two guard.
Lakers get their distributor. An all star. Less stress with AD and Bron. And don’t count out LaVert. I think it’s good for all three. All get better imo.
Lakers ideally would have Mitchell and Reaves. To see them together on the Cavs would be another all time low for the Pelinkshow
