The Warriors are engaging in serious discussions about a sign-and-trade that would send sharpshooter Buddy Hield to Golden State, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link), who reports that the Warriors and Sixers are working on the details of a potential deal.
While Golden State is parting ways this offseason with Klay Thompson, who ranks sixth all-time in made three-pointers (2,481), Hield isn’t far behind him on that all-time list, coming in at No. 22 with 1,924 three-pointers of his own. Over the course of his eight-year career, Hield has knocked down 40.0% of 7.6 three-point attempts per game.
In 2023/24, Hield appeared in a league-high 84 regular season games, exceeding the typical 82-game limit as a result of a midseason trade that sent him from Indiana to Philadelphia. He averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 25.7 minutes per game for the Pacers and Sixers, with a .386 3PT%.
Hield’s elite shooting made him the No. 24 free agent on our top-50 list, though as I wrote within that article, his game doesn’t really stand out in many other areas. His value also took a bit of a hit this year, as he was essentially dumped for non-rotation players and a couple second-round picks by a Pacers team that eventually made it to the Eastern Conference finals, then barely saw the court in the Sixers’ first-round playoff series vs. New York.
Still, depending on the cost – in terms of both his salary and the piece(s) going to Philadelphia – that outside shot could make him a worthwhile investment for the Warriors.
It’s unclear if Golden State would be sending out any salary in the proposed sign-and-trade. There are ways for the team to pull it off with little to no outgoing money as long as Hield’s starting salary isn’t too high, but moving off an expiring contract – such as Gary Payton II and/or Kevon Looney – would give the Warriors more flexibility under their first-apron hard cap and could allow for a more lucrative contract for Hield. A third team might be required in that scenario if the Sixers aren’t interested in taking on salary from the Warriors. But to be clear, this is all hypothetical, since no other details on the talks have been reported so far.
Okay not too shabby. I would guess GP2 is the guy going out in the sign and trade.
Gary Payton makes more than the Room Exception, so it is extremely unlikely he is going to Philly in a sign and trade, as the 76ers would have to use up the rest of their cap space to absorb him. Unless the Warriors are sending along a first, I don’t see why the 76ers would do this, and I don’t think the Warriors want to give up one of their best defensive players and a first for Buddy Hield.
Well it looks like the Sixers are not worried about the cap especially after the Paul George signing?
I don’t see the Warriors sending out anything or anyone else besides GP2. No way it’s Moody no way it’s a first round pick and Hield makes too much money to absorb him into the Warriors payroll without sending a guy out.
Would Philly do this for 2 second round picks? That would work for neither team.
The sixers can sign him into cap space before the PG signing and then trade him fairly easily and still have like 10M in cap space after all the reported moves. Its just a question of what kind of money BH wants since I believe they still have a BAE up to 5M and are about 7.5M below the apron with 14 players under contract.
I’d rather have GP2. Melton and Anderson can let it fly. And play a lil D. Hield never seemed motivated to improve on the defensive end.
Philly needs help at the 4, and at the 2/3…I could see something involving 1 of those, or possibly 1 of GS’s bigs…this offseason could be the end of Looney in GS, unfortunately, even if it’s not in this deal
Trading Looney would leve them with a rookie and 2nd year player at the 5.
Behind draymond…if Post is what it sounds like, your big rotation is in good shape (assuming health) plus there are fits still available in FA
Draymond is a 4. I highly doubt they want that to change.
At this point, and especially on this roster…especially on this roster; draymond Green is a 5/4 more than a 4/5
Nah, Draymond was only playing at the 5 to get more out of the starters. He got Kuminga and Wiggins to start producing together. Eventually, TJD was the starter. And Draymond went back to the 4. Kuminga will probably replace Wiggins.
…actually, Philly apparently is going to cut Paul Reed for cap reasons (which is dumb either reay), so they could want Looney, though I wouldn’t do that if I’m GS, but again, I wouldn’t have wanted Hield in general, so who knows
76er could replace Heild with the guy GSW picked up from OKC. It would be a lot cheaper for 76ers to get under the cap and warriors use up the rest of their trade money.
Philly signed Drummond. So, they don’t need Reed or Looney.
Lol they definitely wouldn’t be precluded by that, especially Reed, who also plays the 4 (he’s only being let go for cap purposes). Smallball 5 is also important behind Embiid
If they cut him they can sign Oubre into the room and not use the MLE on him allowing them to if they want sign Kenyon Martin for like 20M as a walking trade exception for them to use mid season on a one year deal.
The Warriors have added 3 guys who play great defense. GPII doesn’t score a lot.
Read the article guys: Sixers are probably not taking back GP2.
I think they will facilitate the sign and trade for a trade exception and 2nd round pick.
A third team might then take on GPII for two 2nd rounders (sending a weaker one to the sixers).
Not sure who has cap space and wants GPII though. Will Pistons use their cap space in a stupid way again? Two 2nd rounders is not enough for that contract I think.
The sixers are in win now mode, not future 2nd round pick mode.
If they can get a 2nd rounder and a trade exception, without taking back any salary, that is also win now. They wont take gp2…
GP2 is sneaky when he scores. He rebounds and put back at a high efficiency his offense contribution is screens and finding cutters. He’s in a system where you pass on a good shot to find a great shot. His low attemps show he knows others have a better shot than him but he has a better highlight reel than you and I. I want his D in the playoffs. Hield didn’t play much because his D hurt them.
GP2 of 3 years ago is gone.
This GP3 is carrying a lot of injuries, missed 50% of games last year, and didn’t play nearly as well. He’s in his 30’s and the last year of his contract.
His minutes are going to Melton, Moody, and Podz.
Klay replacement [X]
K, now I admit, I’m a little confused
It blows my mind how people can talk so confidently about GSW’s future with regards to tax aprons and whatnot on here, when moves can happen at any moment that blow all their projections out of the water.
I’m saying that this doesn’t fit, as of now…but there’s still moving parts…Everything else before made sense/was clear
If it’s GP2 that makes sense. 9 million or whatever he makes is perfect for a guy like buddy Hield.
Melton is the defensive stud that replaces GP2 so it works out great.
That’s the only scenario I can picture in my mind. Let’s see what it really turns out to be…..
Ya, but I still don’t see why they would need Hield, even after moving GP2, who I expected to be on the table when they signed Melton…I think him, Looney, Moody, and I guess probably Wiggins might be on the table this offseason in some way
Either way, I don’t think Hueld fits, except in the case where Steph gets hurt, and even then, I still think there are other things they can do with their guard rotation they already have
Well perhaps with GP2 injury history and very limited game, a guy like Hield is all they could expect in return?
Shooting is always nice to have and perhaps the Warrior system will help buddy be even better?
I don’t see how Payton gets on the floor with this lineup. He’s a lob threat and a corner three guy on offense. Absolutely nothing else.
Then on defense he’s very good but so is the new guy.
GP2 is very expendable yet Limited in destinations. I’d be thrilled if that was the one for one trade.
Payton is sooooo good at winning basketball if hes healthy he plays, but thats the problem right he hasnt been healthy…. Even this year when he was right he made all kinds of winning plays he just gets hurt landing wrong with no contact to the point where his hamstrings might not ever stay right again
Melton’s defense is OK – he’s no defensive stud though
Melton is a tremendous defensive player. Long arms , quick reactions. Top player in deflections.
Why doesn’t it fit? You need 12 players proven players. 5 are starters, 4 coming off the bench to complete the rotation, and 2 reserves.
Count on Steph and Draymond each to miss 25 games, so reserves are absolutely required.
GP2 and Looney are the two reserves, 11 and 12, used opportunistically. Hield is the 10th man in rotation, a 40% spot up shooter, can play SG or SF. They are the 10th and 11th guys in the rotation.
Minutes divied up this way, assuming no injuries. (Apply a 1.15 factor to get expected minutes.)
Steph 32 mins at PG
Podz 16 mins at PG, 8 at SG
Moody 20 mpg at SG
Melton 20 mpg at SG
Wiggins 24 mpg at SF
Kuminga 24 mpg at SF , 8 mpg at PF
Draymond 24 mpg at PF/C
TJD 24 mpg at C
Anderson 16 mpg at PF
Kuminga 32 mins
Yep we can count on Steph missing 25 because in the last 4 seasons Steph has missed 25+ games exactly once and a total of 5 times in 15 year career. We can also count on Dray to so because he’s done it 3 times in his 12 year career.
@chucktoad1 , you’re using the wrong numbers.
1) The older you get, the more games you miss because of injuries. These guys are old now. Steph is 36.
In the first 5 years of his career, Draymond missed an average of 3 games per year. In the last 5 seasons, he’s missed an average of 24 games.
Steph missed an average of 15 games in his 1st 5 years. In the last 5 years, he’s missed an average of 23 games.
2) Dunleavy and Kerr have both said that Steph was exhausted in the latter part of last season, and plan to give him significantly more planned games off this year.
@daveyJ
Is Steph still on the team? Ok theyre in the cap since he accounts for about half of the cap alone. Like dude learn that the tax apron and room are different. Tax this year is at 170M cap is 140M so you have to be below 14o to have room. Steph makes 60M so they are not a room team with Steph and any other players basically.
Learn about how the NBA cap works or dont be surprised when people correct you. Anyone can go to Spotrac and see the multi year table with the GSW guaranteed money over the next 4 years and without liquidating the roster they are not a cap team!
Hield is garbage. His defense is so unplayable. He can hit the 3 but even that is hit or miss in game
Sounds like Klay Thompson but cheaper….
The Philly logo gives you credibility on Hield.
But I’ve seen a lot of him over the last 2 years, and I wouldn’t call his defense “unplayable”? He’s not a starter, clearly. But as a role player, like we wanted Klay to be, do you not think his defense is serviceable?
i’m also a Sixers fan, and Hield is basically unplayable in the playoffs unless he is scorching hot from 3. He does try, but just doesn’t have the awareness or quick enough feet to defend the perimeter at even a serviceable level.
Even on offense, he really can’t do anything but shoot 3’s. Against the Knicks there were multiple times where he tried pump-faking on 3’s and driving to the rim and it was always a disaster. Combined with his poor D, Nurse had no choice but to bench him. Then he was hot in Game 6, but Sixers lost anyway.
That trade made no sense to me from either side…Indiana lost Mathurin, and they made the other move for Siakam; they didn’t need to move Hield anymore, and probably could have used him
For Philly, they didn’t need another guard like that, and would have been better off keeping Marcus Morris, after their earlier great trade with the clippers…furthermore, philly then made the trade for Cam Payne, making it make even less sense
Klay Thompson at 35 yrs, after ACL & Achilles surgery
EQUALS
Buddy Hield at 31 yrs old.
Both are sub-par defenders. Both are best used as rotation players, not staters.. Their offensive spits stats are remarkably similar.
Over the course of Hield’s eight-year career, he has knocked down 40.0% of 7.6 outside attempts per game.
Hield and Reed for Wiggins and TJD ?
I think the Warriors really like TJD. It helps that he’s their only legitimate big man LOL.
I can’t see them trading him at all. Plus being a second rounder, he’s still cheap !!
I was just trying to make the salaries match up
He could conceivably be left out entirely
But all 3 of the others have been rumored to be on the block.
F*** no!
Golden states dynasty is all over, they need to start over , keep Steph and start over and get younger. Hield is nothing special, they should have gotten a lot more for Klay. GSW has no chance to even make the playoffs now without a big Wiggins trade or Green trade but they won’t move green and can’t say I disagree but they need to do something Huge to beat teams like Dallas, Philly, Clippers, Tims, Celtics, their done. Start the rebuild now.
Sure their Dynasty is over but I don’t think they want to tear it down to bottom out. They’re bringing in some veterans to stay competitive and fight for the play in this coming season.
They already have a bunch of young guys so if they develop the Warriors will avoid a 25 win season.
Resetting the tax and the cap this year will help them bag an elephant and fill a hole next summer perhaps?
We shall see. But until then we’ll be fighting with the Grizzlies Pelicans Suns jazz Clippers Lakers etc, for that seven or eight through 10 seed. Exciting season ahead !!
What does start over even mean
Dynasties are rare my friend. Heild was a one trick pony, Thompson at least played defense. Go back to sleep.
Moody is not going anywhere
Here’s the current preferred order of exit for the Golden State Warriors.
1. Wiggins
2. GP2
3. MOODY
4. Looney
On top of that if they need to sign and trade one of last year’s players they might do that but preferably not. That would bring in more salary instead of unloading one of these four.
Part of the issue is Wiggins and Kuminga are extremely similar type of players and don’t fit well together without certain things around them; kuminga has also complained multiple times about starting, which also complicates it (like Tyler Herro did)…Wiggins can play a little more on the wing though, right now. He is a 3/4, whereas Kuminga is a 4/3, but again, it matters who else is on the floor
…Actually, I should rephrase that…it’s not they don’t fit well together without certain things around them; it’s they require certain spacing, in general, b/c they’re inconsistent shooters, even though Wigggins is much better now (he is impacted by who he has been on the floor with as well, including Klay Thompspn, even when he didn’t knock down shots himself)
It still works defensively though, if Draymond Green, and someone else is on the floor, and there are certain teams where regardless, it should work; I’m meaning more against the best teams…also, if either, really specifically Kuminga, improves their shot that would also obviously be helpful there
That’s why it worked with them and Otto Porter being interchangeable in certain lineups where his shooting at those positions, and defense, worked with both
Team wants Kuminga to be a 3, or a 4.
I’m taking the team’s reluctance to include him in deals that would land us a star as a sign Kuminga is given the starting role as a 3 going forward.
Interestingly, Wiggins was 2/3 at Minnesota, although we’ve never used him that way. He’s steady with his dribble, if not confident. He got his stroke back in the last 2 months of this past season, which might make him a decent option if Moody, Podz, or GP2 are sent out.
“ But to be clear, this is all hypothetical, since no other details on the talks have been reported so far.”
Here’s the last line of the article. ^
Yes let’s complain about speculation about the dwindling Warriors directly below an article completely based in speculation.
People need to get a grip. Hield never made the playoffs when he was a starter or rotation player and got benched this year when he finally made a postseason. Kyle Anderson averaged over 10ppg exactly once in 10 years.
Moody, Podz and Melton are all intriguing young players, but pretending they all will just realize their full potential in one offseason and become rotation studs is ridiculous.
Buddy is going to get Draymond suspended again.
The splash cousin
Hi all,
I’ve been reading Hoops Rumors for years and I want to thank you all for the entertainment (and opinions). Originally from San Francisco, I remember the Warriors Championship in ’75 during my first year of playing college basketball. Those were the days for a point guard without much of an outside shot. :) I then lived in Seattle when they won in ’79 so I felt lucky before moving to Detroit for work. Anyway, thank you all for the continued basketball fanaticism. From North of the Arctic Circle.
Thank you for your comment. We look forward to hearing more from you.
TJD fills a need for Philly. Pod would also make sense. I don’t see any value in adding Moody. GP would be another smaller guard, albeit a better defender. We’ll see how it shakes out.
Do you actually watch the sixers? No.
TJD is valued by warriors so no way he is being traded to anyone. Pod is also valued as Thompson replacement. Those 2 are not being traded.
Hield would have to agree to a salary of approximately $6M/yr to fit into the balance of the trade exception left from the Klay trade after Slo Mo’s addition. Failing that, someone is going to need to be shipped out to land Buddy, but whether Philly would have interest in GPII or not is questionable.
As for the Warriors, I don’t hate their moves since losing Klay. This was not a deep team last year, so adding a couple of solid guys in Anderson and Melton, along with replacing some lost shooting in Hield isn’t the worst way to go. Sure, Hield’s defence is almost unplayable, but Klay has also basically hit that point between this age and injury history.
No doubt Klay is still better than Hield, but is Klay better than the three guys combined? I don’t think so at this point.
Since none of these deals are official yet, it would technically be possible to turn a few deals into a big multi-team one and acquire Anderson and Hield using Klay’s outgoing salary for matching purposes (they could take back more that way than if they traded Klay, then acquired the other two into the TPE). But it would be tricky.
Please trade Kyle Anderson away
So soon? lol
Kerr has said Kuminga’s future is at the 3, not 4. Statistically, the main problem when they played together was rebounding. Both of them rebound like 3’s, not 4’s.
They want Kuminga to improve his 3 pt shooting and middle.
1) The older you get, the more games you miss because of injuries.
In the first 5 years of his career, Draymond missed an average of 3 games per year. In the last 4 seasons he’s missed an average of 25 games.
Free Moses Moody! Dumbleavy and DumberKerr are going to let Moody rot on the bench even though he’s a potential star and a better player than Hield.
