Alperen Sengun would like to sign a rookie scale extension this offseason but he admits he may have to wait until next offseason, Eurohoops relays. The Rockets center was asked about his contract situation during a “Sunday Chat with Fatih Altayli” broadcast.
“We are waiting. My managers are negotiating with them,” he said. “I don’t become a free agent next year. This year, teams can’t make offers to me. Next year, other teams can make offers.”
Sengun would become a restricted free agent next summer if he doesn’t reach an extension agreement this offseason. There has been speculation that the Rockets might follow the Sixers’ approach to this offseason, where they delayed a max extension with Tyrese Maxey until this summer in order to open up as much cap space as possible to pursue top free agents.
Sengun, who finished third in the Most Improved Player balloting, would rather get long-term security sooner than later.
“Right now, they don’t have to sign, but of course, I want to sign. Because then your mind is at ease. You secure your future,” Sengun said.
We have more from the Western Conference:
- The Clippers signed Kris Dunn to a three-year, $16,279,200 contract which is non-guaranteed in the final year, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype tweets. The third year can become fully guaranteed if Dunn is named to the All-Defensive First or Second Team during either the 2024/25 or 2025/26 season — if he doesn’t earn All-Defensive honors, his guarantee date for the third-year salary would be June 30, 2026. Los Angeles acquired Dunn in a sign-and-trade with Utah.
- The Nuggets shouldn’t put Russell Westbrook in the starting lineup to fill Kentavious Caldwell-Pope‘s spot, Sean Keeler of the Denver Post opines. Westbrook is joining Denver after clearing waivers on Monday. Westbrook would be better off anchoring a mostly youthful second unit, providing leadership and a change of pace. He’d be a better backup at the point than Reggie Jackson – who was dealt to Charlotte – was last season, Keeler adds. Westbrook would still get chances to start if and when Murray is unavailable.
- Assuming Brandon Ingram doesn’t get traded, what does the Pelicans’ depth chart look like? Christian Clark of the New Orleans Times-Picayune explores that topic, projecting a starting five of Dejounte Murray, Herbert Jones, Ingram, Zion Williamson and Daniel Theis. That would leave Jose Alvarado, Trey Murphy, Yves Missi, and – most notably – CJ McCollum as the top reserves.
- Spurs center Charles Bassey gave up his right to veto a trade during the 2024/25 league year, Hoops Rumors has learned. A player who re-signs with his previous team on a one-year contract (or a two-year deal with a second-year option) is typically given a de facto no-trade clause for the season, but that right can be waived as part of a contract agreement.
There are rumors about Sengun to Knicks. Which I don’t believe. Rockets would be fools to let him go. Plus it would take too much. Makes no sense.
Who will take a chance on BI. Looks like no one. Not even his team. Not worth max to me.
I love if knick can get sengun. So sad when hartenstein leave. Cmon thibs, you can go to ecf
Al P is not going anywhere.
CJ McCollum coming off the bench? That’s a truckload of cash on your reserve squad. My oh my.
Yeah, but there’s plenty of opportunity to slide herb to the 3 and play CJ and Murray in the back court. CJ is still good, but trading for Murray is an acknowledgement that his best years are behind him. 25 mins per night of CJ should deliver good value I reckon.
Yep and CJ can play the one or the two. He’s actually the perfect combo guard off the bench.
Ingram is not an asset, he’s a liability. From a business sense. With the pelicans depth and that salary, the pels should realistically be giving up a draft asset to unload him. This sounds like a three or four team deal. I’d love to see him come to the lakers for hachimura and russell and whatever else to match salaries plus some draft assets, the third and fourth teams should get all the draft compensation for taking the junk contracts.
With the Pels improving, GSW simply has to deal Podziemski and picks for Lauri (and cash) to keep up. After an excellent offseason, they are now 1 big star-level piece away, and Lauri’s game being similar to KD’s would have Kerr dusting off some of those old plays! Maybe even expand the deal to include Wiggins, Payton or Looney! Utah and GSW are excellent trade partners right now…
Warriors are not gonna trade Podz. In any case, Ainge has decided that Lauri is not good enough to merit a max contract, so he’s trying to get rid of him for as much as he can get. Are other teams competing for him? Warriors would be idiots to give up key young players or too many picks for him, and I don’t think Lacob is an idiot.
Russell Westbrook Gave Up $1.7M In Buyout With Jazz …..
I guess he wants to be in Denver.
That’s how much Denver will pay him. He’ll still get his 4 million. At least that’s how I believe these things work out.
He will make over 5 mill with Denver…better than his original 4 mill deal…
Great negotiation skills by Westbrook’s agent. We will only give up 1.7 or else he’s sticking around. Danny Ainge is like, oops.
Kind of like the idea of CJ coming off the bench… Murphy needs more court time..get rid of Ingram if possible and bring in a centre… frustrating and I’m not even a Pels fan
I’d definitely have CJ starting over Ingram.
You need the floor spacing.
Player for Player, CJ is the better shooter, better ball handler, better playmaker and offers over 10 years of NBA experience. Ingram can defend better and rebound better but you have other guys which can do that for you.
DeJounte just spent the past couple seasons playing SG to Trae Young, so he knows how to play both on ball/off ball offence and cover for his backcourt teammate on defence.
CJ for a few years now has had to be the point guard in New Orleans and last season they tried to make Ingram the point forward and it worked I suppose but having a true guard in Dejounte do that role and CJ going back into being the secondary guy like he did with Dame for years in Portland will be best for him.
At SF, I’d rather Herb who again is a better defender and offers better shooting which is what you want around your star in Zion.
Even off the bench you’ve got Trey Murphy, Ingram is really not needed on this team and hence why they should be willing to take cents of the dollar to get rid of him. What you need is some real size some low. Theis is nice and Missi could be one day but one lacks size and the other lacks experience and needs development.
If you were to have a Vuce, Capela, Allen, Robinson down low you’d be stacked
