The three-year max extension that Bam Adebayo signed last month signals that it’s time for him to take over as the face of the Heat, writes Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel. At 27, Adebayo represents the future of the franchise, Winderman adds, which means personnel decisions should be made based on what’s best for him rather than Jimmy Butler.
Butler will turn 35 soon and his days in Miami may be numbered, regardless of whether he chooses to pick up his $52.4MM player option for the 2025/26 season. The Heat have explored trade possibilities involving Butler, and they may be ready to focus on a younger team built around Adebayo after years of short-term veteran additions.
Winderman observes that Adebayo and Butler have rarely exhibited much chemistry, as it often seemed they were “competing for the same spots on the court.” He also points out that although Kyle Lowry was brought in on Butler’s behalf, Adebayo seemed to benefit more from having an experienced point guard running the offense. This year’s Olympics have provided more evidence of what Adebayo can do when he’s surrounded by high-level talent, Winderman adds.
There’s more from Miami:
- Adebayo is displaying his versatility for Team USA, per Walter Villa of The Miami Herald, with NBC broadcaster and former Heat star Dwyane Wade noting that Adebayo is filling the same role that he did during the 2008 Games. “I got an early text from (Miami head coach and Team USA assistant Eric Spoelstra) and, for me, ‘early’ was about 11 a.m.,” Wade said during Saturday’s game. “Spo said Bam’s role on this team is similar to mine in (2008, when USA won gold). You are coming in off the bench, and your role can change every night. That’s how valuable Bam has been, playing his role very well.”
- It’s unlikely that Butler will be traded before the start of the season, Winderman states in a mailbag column. He adds that the team would have needed to pursue a Butler deal around the draft or the start of free agency if it was serious about unloading him. There probably won’t be any movement on a Butler trade until at least December 15, when most free agents who signed this summer become eligible to be dealt, and nothing may happen until closer to the February 6 trade deadline.
- Despite rumors of interest in Marcus Morris, the Heat are likely done with significant transactions for the offseason, Winderman adds in the same piece. The only exception may be if they can get a rotation player at the veteran’s minimum.
Bam is a beast. Be hard not to take Jokic or embiid over Bam if given the choice but I’d be more than happy with Bam. My personal favourite centre in the league and I’m a Boston fan.
The carrier of the culture. I wouldn’t trade Bam for anything
…and people think I hate bigs lol
Agree, I love his game, attitude and versatility big time.
Bam is a PF at best. Bam gets owned by taller Centers. 6’8 lol wingspan can’t do nothing for you
Lol yeah OK.
Moving Jimmy would be up there with trying to move Beal and LaVine as one of the hardest deals to make.
He’s 34 with a lot of miles on the clock, how much is left in the gas tank? He’s still due 100m over the next 2 seasons. Rumours are he wants the max and any contract negotiations aren’t going to be easy. He’s also pretty loud and stubborn so there’s a good chance he could have a negative affect on certain teams.
Then there’s the fact Miami wouldn’t be looking to move him just for the sake of it, they want a somewhat decent return for him especially considering he’s still one of the better players in todays game.
The only real idea I could see is Darius Garland to Miami with Niang for Butler but you’d still need to add another asset like a young player (Jacquez or Jovic) or a first round pick, in my opinion.
Cleveland also aren’t in any rush as all their guys are signed up long term.
Brandon Ingram would also make some sense.
Maybe in some crazy world you make a 3 team deal and send Herro to Nee Orleans and go for both Garland and Ingram. That would be hugely unlikely but look really good on paper.
Miami: Garland, Ingram and Niang
Cleveland: Butler and Jacquez
Pelicans: Herro
Miami:
Garland Robinson Ingram Jovic Adebayo
Rozier JRich Niang KLove Ware
Definitely a younger and different looking Miami team but still very competitive. Garland is a real table setter and would pair excellent with Bam. On the wing you’ve got Ingram who again would go well with a traditional point guard and big man. Rozier is a nice spark plug off the bench and you’ve still got Jovic and Ware for the future.
Cleveland:
Spida Strus Butler Mobley Allen
Jerome LeVert Jacquez Wade …
More built for winning now. Very strong defensively, decent depth but need a couple more guys to fill out the bench.
Pelicans:
Murray Herro Herb Zion Theis
Alvarado CJ Trey JRE Missi
Definitely good steps taken to build around Zion for the long term. Murray and Herro make a solid backcourt pairing, still need a real centre and better depth in my opinion but overall an improvement
…bro, maybe take a couple of seconds before doing that to yourself…
Just to start, there is zero universe where you could possibly believe Jimmy Butler is the same situation as Zach Lavine or Bradley Beal…
It’s one thing when you’re a guard that can’t defend, and needs the ball in their hands, but it’s another thing to be a wing player that defends minimum 1-4 at an elite level, an elite half court scorer, your best playmaker, etc
Give me 2 or 3 teams that would trade for him and what sorta package that could actually work then…
I never questioned his talent it’s his salary, contract, age, wear and tear and attitude that which make doing a deal difficult
It doesn’t even matter b/c the Heat are obviously not going to move him. This narrative makes no sense
Exactly my point you can’t
When you get a chance ask Pat Riley what he thinks of Ira Winderman
This comment legit made my entire week lmao..I was actually going to say something similar about him, again, when this thread was first posted, but decided to leave it alone this time, but you came through
formerlyz what would you do to fix this team?
I wouldn’t have traded Kyle Lowry and a 1st for 3 years of Rozier…and I would never have used the 15th pick on a center that cant guard the perimeter, doesnt play with effort, turns the ball over near the rim, etc, and is only there for certain matchups, especially with several bigs that were about to be FAs. I wouldn’t have lost young players in favor of guys that aren’t even on the roster themselves anymore, and if I was bringing so many wings and guards into training camp trying to replace Caleb, I may have signed someone at the 4, instead of Alec Burks, though it depends on the replacement pick I made at 15, as that could have caused several different courses of options
1 of Herro and Rozier, at minimum, can’t be on this team when the season starts, but not sure how they’ll accomplish that
Ultimately, none of it matters until they stay even slightly healthy 1 time in 12 years
“doesn’t play with effort” this must be based off of pre-Miami effort viewing.
JJ Jr and Jimmy will alternate at the 4
Are you really a heat fan?
We have a lot more options there than at previous times, with Highsmith, Jaime, Jovic, Jimmy, but for certain matchups, I think they need another 4/3 in the highsmith type or possibly someone that can play smallball 5 more defensively than Jaime or Jovic
What would you do to fix this team,
Points out various mistakes/things he doesn’t like in the past and offers nothing to actually try fix the team.
Easy to sit back and critique something that’s already happened and say I would’ve done this and that.
What does that even mean? They can’t do anything right now b/c they’re barely under the 2nd apron…they aren’t adding a 15th man.
Without that, there is no other way to answer the question…unless they trade 1 of their guards+ for Cam Johnson or Brandon Ingram or someone we don’t know that might be available, they literally can’t do anything
I also don’t necessarily agree with the term “fix.”
Okay then I’ll say what should you do to make this team champions* What would you do general manager?
I agree with the Lowry trade along with the Ware pick (because he and jovic are the only young players, should just of drafted someone else older and ready and traded Jovic. The time is now or never
This is a difficult team to fix. Most teams are easy but this is tricky . Plus I have every team in the past on what they should have done just saying.
I look at this team and it has three layers of players. The veterans, mid 20s and a couple young players. I can see now why formerlyz didn’t like the pick of Ware, he is so young compared to everyone else. A great prospect though. If you have one really young player then get some more.
With Butler in the lineup then you should have another veteran his age starting with him. One veteran starting doesn’t cut it. I also don’t like Rozier on this team. Bam would flourish at PF HE IS NOT A CENTER, if you think along with the NBA personal with the midget position less 3point watching each other shoot league then you and the NBA personal know nothing. Refs help us please(Olympics against South Sudan)
PG. ? (30+ veteran like I said),
SG. Hero
SF. Butler
PF. Bam
C. ? (Veteran maybe) A real C and if that doesn’t make sense then ANYONE TALLER THAN 6’10
Trade Rozier,Josh Richardson (I do like) and Bryant for a veteran PG and C. Waive Dru Smith, Two way Stevens and keep a eye out for young SF, SG and PG’s.
Jimmy got injured. He’s coming back. We’ll have a better idea after new years if they are indeed a broken team.
I’m fine with them running it back. Bam is an undersized center, but not that undersized.
He’s fine at the 5.
Trust me Bam would flourish as a PF. Just need a C who can rebound and block shots. He would be one of the best players in the league.
If they had someone like Myles Turner or Evan Mobley or Anthony Davis, but they dont..
Myles Turner is a great choice. Ware and Jovic and Cash for Turner
Not even in my own dreams…
Maybe a three team trade with Rozier included?
