Appearing on the Petros and Money radio show on AM 570 Los Angeles, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss explained the team’s decision to hire J.J. Redick as its new head coach. While he was a longtime NBA sharpshooter, Redick lacks high-level coaching experience.
“We wanted to kind of think a different way,” Buss said, per HoopsHype. “Really, he’s got a vision. I’m not comfortable talking about the basketball stuff, but we were looking for a candidate that would bring something different and really invest in developing young players.
“J.J. is the right person for us. Again, I just want to work to really speak for itself, so I don’t want to hype it and say it’s gonna be a home run. We have to give him time to establish what he wants to establish.
“I’m really impressed with his staff. Right now, it’s not mandatory for the players to come in and practice but players are coming in and working out. The coaching staff with Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks, there’s a lot of experience that will be there for him to make that adjustment to being a head coach. … He knows what this league is about and I think he’ll be a great leader.”
Here’s more from the Pacific:
- The Lakers have hired Dr. Leroy Sims to be their new director of player performance and health, the team announced in a press release (Twitter link via Jovan Buha of The Athletic). Sims, who was most recently the NBA’s senior vice president, head of medical operations, was also Golden State’s medical director and team physician from 2011-14.
- The Warriors will hold their training camp this fall in Hawaii instead of their home arena, the Chase Center, writes Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. As Poole explains, while holding the camp in Honolulu will be costly, the team views it as a necessary expense to “promote healthy bonding” amid major changes to the roster and coaching staff.
- Theo Lawson of The Spokesman-Review details Isaac Jones‘ unusual NBA journey, which included playing for a junior college in Washington for multiple seasons before he received a Division I offer. Jones signed a two-way contract with the Kings after going undrafted out of Washington State in June. “I wasn’t supposed to be here, but kept my head down and grinded and now I’m here,” he said. “It can all change in like two days. It happened so fast, so don’t take anything for granted and just work hard.”
Long way of saying, Bron told you to hire JJ and draft Bronny. Lakers stand pat. Warriors have let Steph down. Clips got depth but lost top end talent in PG13. Suns got a point guard, even if he is better suited to being a back up PG, Still a positive move. Kings got better. More questions than answers in the Pacific. All capable of coming dead last under the right circumstances. Not the toughest division but certainly the closest talent wise and most interesting.
Warriors did not let Steph down. The new CBA handcuff them on what they could do so redid the team and giving the young players more minutes. The young players need to take the next step. Can Kuminga be the star everyone thinks he can be. Is Podz a starting guard and will TD be able to play center?
OK.
Teams who think they’re legit don’t care about the CBA or tax implications….think about it.
The new CBA tax changes were the results of teams like the Warriors & Clippers shelling out considerably more tax money than other teams. sometimes 2-3x more than the 3rd & 4th highest paying clubs.
It had to be great as a Dubs fan seeing ownership be willing to go all out like that for so long but sorry, you don’t get to cry Wolf after the fact now that GS can’t spend like they used to.
B-I-N-G-O.
Now its the Celtics time to complain about it. Celtics will be over the amount next 4 years. So unless they trade a Brown, Holiday, or Tatum they will be bottom feeding like the warriors were the last few years to get free agents. One big injury and the window closes.
Lol, such is life, what goes up must come down. Enjoy the ride while it lasts. Already seen bad times, not much you can do about it. If the owners want to win and are happing paying, we’ll ride this thing until the wheels fall off. Warriors wheels have fallen off. Wouldn’t be surprised if Steph leaves.
It will be fun watching the warriors make you eat your words. All you haters are going to be disappointed. Steph is never leaving.
You may win a regular season game. Who cares. Your days of contending are over. Shoot for the in season tournament, man, that’s the warriors best bet. Warrior and laker fans are so touchy. You’ve had your time, and I’m sure you couldn’t stop telling everybody about it either. When my team sucks, I’ll admit it. Oh well, time to rebuild.
Its good that i am not some bandwagon fan like you that skips around the NBA from team to team. Let me guess you are a celtics fan today.
All teams worry about it. Its the sign on the times. Once you are over the tax apron you can’t sign free agents unless they are for the lowest pay.
See Eric above. Warriors didn’t give a crap about payroll or tax implications while the title window was open. They do now that it’s closed. This is reality for every ball club, nothing lasts forever.
Obvious troll comment not based in reality.
I always believed in you Jones
CBA is different than it was. It was designed to eliminate dynasty teams. Clippers couldn’t give George a contract. Your Lakers don’t have payroll too.
Clippers chose not to give George a contract, did not want to commit 4 years to a core that Ballmer doesn’t believe could win.
The contract taxes would have costed more than the contract.
Arc89 is right. Not even the wealthiest teams can spend indiscriminately anymore.
Why is Jeanie the governor of a basketball team if she is “not comfortable talking about the basketball stuff”?
Hello???
