AUGUST 8: Flynn’s deal with the Spurs, which is an Exhibit 10 contract, is now official, per RealGM’s transaction log.
AUGUST 7: Malachi Flynn has agreed to a one-year contract with the Spurs, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). It’s a non-guaranteed deal, a league source tells Andrew Lopez of ESPN (Twitter link).
The 26-year-old point guard made headlines with the Pistons in April when he scored 50 points off the bench in a game against Atlanta. The scoring spree was out of character for Flynn, who has averaged 5.5 PPG in 213 games throughout his NBA career.
Flynn played for three teams last season, starting the year with the Raptors, who selected him with the 29th pick in the 2020 draft. After 31 games, he was shipped to New York in late December as part of the OG Anunoby trade. He saw limited time in 14 games with the Knicks before being dealt to Detroit at the February deadline.
Flynn got a greater opportunity to play after joining the Pistons and responded by averaging 8.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 24 games while logging 14.3 minutes per night. He became a free agent when his rookie scale contract expired after last season, and Detroit elected not to tender a qualifying offer, making him unrestricted.
San Antonio already has 15 players with fully guaranteed deals, plus all three of its two-way contract slots are filled, so Flynn faces a difficult road to win a job at training camp.
Great landing spot, you’ve got CP3 who is the old veteran at the top of the line of point guards, then there’s Stephon Castle who kinda plays both point and shooting guard.
After that there’s Tre Jones is third in line and projects to be the only other point guard to any get real minutes.
I see Flynn beating out Wesley and slotting in behind Jones and depending on how they use Castle he should be some opportunities and hopefully can showcase his skill and earn more and more minutes.
Before FA I was hoping we would end up in ATL behind Trae or in Brooklyn behind Schroder but still this late into FA it’s not a bad place to be.
Blood, Flynn won’t see a minute. He is straight trash.
Yet Lonnie Walker is unsigned???
And Fultz
Lonnie Walker should get a guaranteed contract somewhere, and the Spurs already have 15 contracts that are guaranteed. If Flynn stays in San Antonio it seems he would replace one of the two-way players or there is a trade that moves more pieces than they bring back. At least he will get some run with fellow Aztec alumni Mensah at training camp.
Best landing spots for Lonnie Walker are Cleveland, New Orleans or Philadelphia on vet minimum contract. Or possibly a team like Utah could pay over the vet minimum.
Probably Nawlins…
Lonnie fly to Europe yesterday. I was uber driver.Had his agent with him. He was in for a tryout with the Orlando Magic
I always thought Flynn could be a true PG. Today if you’re a guard they expect you to shoot. Seems wrong since a PG. Should be expected to run an offense and pressure the D with scoring. Not necessarily shooting. Flynn can score. But he needs mins for that. A true PG imo is still a strong piece of the offense. Even as a backup. Pops should be able to help Flynn find his place.
I liked Flynn and San Antonio a good fit behind CP3. Does anyone know if Ryan Archie is still available? I think Knicks has one more roster spot for the final Nova Infinity stone.
Flynn is a poor mans Aaron brooks.
Mmmm, Tre Jones is better than Flynn. Not going to begrudge a man for getting a deal though. Does this mean Sochan is no longer getting minutes at the point.
Spurs bombed this off season. D+ Spurs. Should be a A+ but San Antonio is not a top notch organization anymore making dumb decision after dumb decision. It’s probably time Pop retires and let him keep all that money on his contract
I am glad Flynn gets another chance. Probably the most random 50 point game ever
This is a non-guaranteed deal, which means Malachi Flynn is simply a training camp invitee. The Spurs have 15 guaranteed contracts. For Flynn to guarantee his contract and make the 15-man roster, the Spurs would have to eat the guaranteed money (2.1 million) of either Bassey or Mamukelashvili and that is not likely. It would appear Flynn’s team saw no other opportunities and he is taking the training camp invitation to showcase himself for another team’s standard contract. The Spurs could offer Flynn one of their two-way spots and remove one of their present two-way players.
Bingo. How does anyone think he’s actually going to make a team? I guess bots trying to drive traffic, and, kudos, it worked.
I’m not a huge fan of Flynn but he is 10x better than bassey & mamu. Spurs are in rebuild mode , so if he prove himself in camp. I wouldn’t be surprised if they waived one of those guys. Especially bassey since he can’t seem to stay healthy.
No mention of how he dropped 50 points on Atlanta in a game last April 3?
If anyone can guide him to be a more complete player, it’s Pop.
Who has pop developed in the past 5-6 years !?
Dejounte Murray.
So he’s gonna help CP3 warm up then go to the G-League?
If you’ve got to be a cow at least be the cow that gets fed to the t rex in jurassic park. Sure you are dead, but at least people remember you.
What?
Considering it’s an exhibit 10 that is exactly what is going to happen.
I am so perplexed by the discourse I see around some players. Flynn is not good in comparison to other NBA players. He is a fringe g league type.
Scoring 50 is more an indictment on the Hawks defensive ineptitude last season than anything else.
I guess he stole the torch from TRoss for the most random 50 point game in recent memory though.
Him scoring 50 points shows how weak the defense is in this era. Weakest era ever
