The Spurs have signed free agent guard Jameer Nelson Jr., according to Paul Garcia of The Spot Up Shot, who cites the team’s official roster page.
While the terms of the agreement aren’t known, it’s likely a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contract. An Exhibit 10 contract can be converted to a two-way deal prior to the regular season (the Spurs have one open slot) or can make a player eligible to earn a bonus worth up to $77.5K if he’s waived and then spends at least 60 days with his team’s G League affiliate (in this case, the Austin Spurs).
The son of longtime NBA point guard Jameer Nelson, Jameer Jr. spent his first two college seasons at George Washington, followed by two years at Delaware and a single season at TCU in 2023/24. As a super-senior for the Horned Frogs, he averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.1 steals in 25.0 minutes per game across 34 appearances (22 starts), with a shooting line of .434/.306/.738.
After going undrafted in June, Nelson caught on with the Spurs for Summer League play, appearing in eight total games with the team in the California Classic and Las Vegas leagues. He struggled with his shot (.277/.267/.600) in a limited role (11.2 MPG), but it appears the Spurs still envision him having a spot on their G League team.
San Antonio now has a full 21-man roster, though more moves are expected in the coming days and weeks.
Glad he gets some attention. Good defender
Feels like two years ago that his dad played in the NBA.
Will people go crazy over Nelson getting a shot because of his dad the way they did Bronny?
Probably not, because it is Jameer Nelson and not LeBron James, so most casual fans probably won’t even know..
They probably still won’t go crazy though, mostly because it’s just basically a tryout and not drafted and handed guaranteed roster spot. This type of thing happens all the time for former veterans kids with some talent.
There is common nepotism, and “Yes, Jameer, you’ve always been well respected here and everywhere you have been. We will give your kid a tryout and see what happens.”
And then there is “Hey, LOS ANGELES LAKERS, unless you draft my son and give him a guaranteed deal, I’m leaving for nothing and going elsewhere.”
Not exactly the same thing when you break it down..
Either way, that’s just LeBron’s way. He’s made those kind of “my way or I am leaving” deals his entire career even with his friends getting them contracts, trades, and extensions. That’s why he’s typically signed shorter term deals to have that leverage and that power.
Whether you view that as a negative or a positive is your choice, it’s just a fact.
Show us the article where LeBron said, “HEY, LOS ANGELES LAKERS, unless you draft my son and give him a guaranteed deal, I’m leaving for nothing and going elsewhere.”
If he said that, that is huge – and there would definitely be a write-up, video, tweet, spoken with anonymity quote, or something quoting him as making that statement to the “LAKERS”.
First I think jump shot was joking and sure that’s how it happens. Lebron would do that publicly. So ridiculous
Well nelson jr. Will get 50k and waived and hopefully will get a g-league deal after. bronny got picked late in the second round and got a 4 year 7.9 million dollar deal.
It does seem like the NBA is more and more becoming clan-based, with so many second generation players.
