The Warriors and free agent forward Kevin Knox have agreed to a one-year deal, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
While Charania doesn’t specify the terms of the contract, Golden State is right up against a first-apron hard cap and can’t sign a player to a standard deal without a corresponding roster move, so it’s safe to assume Knox is inking a non-guaranteed camp contract that won’t count against the cap. It figures to include Exhibit 9 language and possible Exhibit 10 language too.
The ninth overall pick in the 2018 draft, Knox began last season with the Rip City Remix, Portland’s G League affiliate. He signed with the Pistons in early November and was in the NBA for three months before being sent to Utah at February’s trade deadline. The Jazz immediately waived him, and with no NBA opportunities immediately presenting themselves, the 25-year-old eventually reported back to the Remix.
For the season, Knox appeared in 31 games (11 starts) at the NBA level for Detroit, averaging 7.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per contest. Those averages aren’t far off from the ones he has posted across 306 career outings for the Knicks, Hawks, Trail Blazers, and Pistons (7.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 18.0 MPG), though his field-goal percentage last season (46.2%) was well above his 39.2% career mark.
Knox suited up for Golden State’s Summer League team in July, playing in six total games in the Las Vegas and California Classic leagues. He averaged 16.0 PPG and 7.2 RPG on .471/.351/.792 shooting in those contests.
There’s technically a path for Knox to make the Warriors’ regular season roster if the team makes a trade or cuts either Lindy Waters or Gui Santos, both of whom are non-guaranteed contracts. However, recent reporting has indicated Golden State will likely hang onto Waters and Santos.
Knox isn’t eligible for a two-way contract and his G League rights are still held by Rip City, so unless the Santa Cruz Warriors trade for those returning rights or Golden State finds room for him on the standard NBA roster, the forward’s stay in the organization may only last a few weeks.
If he makes the team out of camp, I am going to *laugh*.
We both know that ain’t happening unless MDJ trades everyone for Giannis.
His history of providing a team with consistent production is not good so I understand your comment. But there’s something there. Not sure how to unlock it but it’s in there somewhere. You know what’s crazy is that he just turned 25 recently. Seems like he’s been around 10 years.
“There’s something there”
Yes, there is, and it ain’t good.
Career PER of 9.3. 39 percent FG% and 34 percent from three.
He doesn’t pass either.
Gary , not quite 10 seasons, but this will be #7!
Statistically, he’s been consistently awful. No exceptions. But he keeps on making NBA rosters.
Obviously the NBA scouts agree with you. There’s something in there.
Kevin Knox has always intrigued me. I think he has scoring gifts and great size. Just hasn’t been able to put it together and supply a team with consistency.
I remember watching him in summer league in Vegas and the guy was a baller. He’s had quite a few chances let’s see what’s going on here, but clearly he is twice the player of some of these other dudes like Lester Quinones.
Maybe there’s a team with a coach that can spot something to tweak his approach or stroke or confidence or something.
Yeah, other than shooting , passing, and ballhandling he’s way better than Quinones.
I’m glad we can agree on something. But I think they’ve tried the Lester Quinones experiment for a couple of years and it’s time to move on to someone else.
He did look good in summer league but that is not saying much. I wonder if Lindsay is the guy that will not make the team. He is going to need to prove a lot.
Waters can shoot the rock. I’m hoping they can find a way to tap into his potential as an NBA player.
I agree with you about Waters, Gary, and I think the whole reason he is here is because GP2 is on his way out via trade. Podz, Waters and GP2 cant all fit, Podz will get most of the SG mins (while playing a SG/PG hybrid) and Buddy and Moody will get the rest.
Waters and GP2 simply don’t have any paths to like, any playing time right now. Makes more sense to move GP2 plus a pick for a similar-sized contract player who makes more sense on this roster (like, a C), Waters can stay and be in the development role with limited minutes, but Payton cannot.
Lindy Waters is on the team, book it. Waters, after 3 seasons at OKC, was acquired by trading our second round pick, which was several spots ahead of the pick we used on Quentin Post. We acquired Waters to fill a #13-#14 slot, as a proven, if low-upside, rotation player with an exceptional skill: shooting. He was available because OKC’s roster is loaded and they are flush with extra firsts.
Like Gary says, Waters is a *pure* shooter, made 43.5% on 80 attempts for OKC last year. And he’s a hard-nosed defender. After Steph and Hield, and maybe Podz, he’s the best 3 pt shooter on the roster.
OKC used Waters in special situations to space the floor. I suspect the Warriors will do the same.
