Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum and Lakers star forward/center Anthony Davis were named the NBA’s Players of the Week for the stretch of Oct. 22-27, the league announced (Twitter link). Tatum was the Eastern Conference’s winner, while Davis claimed the Western Conference award.
Tatum helped the Celtics to a 3-0 start to the season, which included blowout wins over the Knicks and Wizards. In his first three games, Tatum averaged 33.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists while shooting a blistering 54.7% from the field and 48.6% from beyond the arc.
Davis has also shot the ball extremely well to open the year, connecting on a .571/.400/.800 line. He has helped the Lakers win against three playoff hopefuls this year, defeating the Timberwolves, Suns and Kings to remain undefeated. Davis is averaging 34.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.7 steals per game to open the year.
According to the league (Twitter link), the other nominees in the East were Cleveland’s Jarrett Allen, Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball, Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey, Orlando’s Franz Wagner and Atlanta’s Trae Young. Phoenix’s Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, the Clippers’ James Harden and Ivica Zubac, and the Lakers’ LeBron James were nominated in the West.
Was weary of JJ but man dude can scheme
His best attribute so far has been simplifying all the crazy crap Ham was doing
Great chance AD can win Mvp if he plays 75 games under this new system
I agree. Ham was always the problem with the Lakers, and anyone not wearing blinders or hater-shades could tell. Adjustments were always him taking wild swings instead of having sensible rotations, and he made D-Lo the constant failure point of the offense, whereas Reddick has used him as more of an option guy who can spot up or play off-ball, which suits his skillset better.
The Celtics still look dominant. Not flawless, few teams do, but they look like candidates for a repeat, as expected. Mazzulla is a good coach and Tatum looks like he wants to kill the narrative of him being “The Michael Jordan of Tobias Harrises”, as one post from NBA Twitter called him.
Kind of surprised Allen got the voting nod over Mobley; Mobley was the better of the two on both ends and played more minutes.
Yup spot on
Dlo will have to accept being the 5th best player this year not the 3rd (as Ham wanted)
Can he do it, yes, will he, not holding my breath , luckily he’s expiring and can be moved. He was throwing a tantrum already game 2, I dont think Jj will stand for it long
Major lack of athleticism in Lakers backcourt. That will have to be rectified sooner than later when teams press the court and play more intense. Dlo not athletic, Vincent no way, Reaves not his bag to start an offence and Jj has smartly scaled back LBJ’s role here
Collin Sexton….maybe? Not many Pgs league wide that are good enough and on the market between the 15~30 mil range that Lakers will shop in . They need a Mario Chalmers type (athletic, low usage, can play some D and has some quickness to him )Easier typed than able to pull off tho
Kris Dunn on the Clippers fits that mold, but will they actually trade him? Will Kawhi play enough to keep them competitive?
Honestly, the Lakers might end up with Dennis Schroder again, and that would be outright funny. He keeps coming back because he’s the exact guy they need.
Really like Dunn but I doubt Steve would help Lakers out over a 2nd rder or 2 that he can get elsewhere
DS I’ve thought about as he offers some speed and point of attack D but he’d be more in the bu mold (Vincent) than starter mins Imo
Very ironic tho with the Vincent/DS comps as they were literally interchanged out already. Lakers took an L there especially in the fact Vincent got an extra year that makes his value further underwater on the trade market today
Tj Mconnell would be awesome but Indy aint trading him
Schroder’s actually a very solid 3pt shooter in his more recent career. Last year over 80 games, he shot 38% from 3 on almost 5 per. He’s streaky, but he has value outside of 3pt shots, unlike D-Lo. He also tends to perform better the more attempts he takes. His three best shooting seasons are the ones where he took the most attempts.
Outside of him, the pickings are stupidly slim. Brogdon might be an option by the TD, but he’s a walking injury. Dyson Daniels has defense, but can’t shoot. Outside of that it’s… Davion Mitchell? Maybe Alvarado if the Pels collapse?
Agree very slim pickings at Pg in that 15~30 mil range
DS was def a top candidate, I like the idea of giving Sexton a look tho if he’s healthy at the halfway mark, Utah could want to just dissolve his contract for Dlo+ rather easily ……maybe a heftier package Sexton +Kessler kills 2 birds and gets Utah some real capital
* I think we will be disappointed at this years trade deadline for all teams , not much good for sale from the would be sellers today and teams are watching their cap sheet so so much more these days
Idk if Sexton is an answer for the Lakers. As a Cavs fan, love him when he’s hot, but in all other circumstances his defense is a big negative. He also doesn’t pass as much as you’d like. Even D-Lo knows when to give up the rock.
Sexton + Kessler would be more appealing if Kessler was remotely good.
I actually thought AR looked pretty quick against the traffic cones we have in Sacramento. He’s not gonna blow you away with his athleticism but he’s better physically than he appears.
He’s crafty, he’s skilled but press him 94 ft (or put him in that position) and his value would crater
I think Jj sees this and is having Ad take the ball up a lot, a small thing but smart….but again teams don’t press that much in Oct, come Spring they will.
Lakers run a lot of sets (now) so having 20 seconds to start compared to 12 really helps, opposing coaches will exploit this once the calendar hits January and start putting more pressure on the ball to get them outta rhythm
heh heh lonzo ball can be had for some prospects and/or draft picks
Bronny should of beat out A.D. for this! he was robbed. I don’t care about numbers, I care about results and the Lakes haven’t lost a regular season game since they drafted him!
Payton Pritchard is absolutely balling early on. Not just Tatum and Brown, who are still improving. Pritchard and Hauser have steadily improved each year to the point they’re valuable rotation pieces in a system that suits their game.
