Warriors star guard Stephen Curry will miss at least the next two games due to a left ankle sprain, Kendra Andrews of ESPN writes.
Curry underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, which occurred during Sunday night’s home opener against the Clippers during the third quarter. He returned to the game with eight minutes remaining in the fourth, then twisted the same ankle.
He will be reevaluated on Friday.
“The MRI was positive,” coach Steve Kerr said. “That’s the main thing. No significant damage.”
De’Anthony Melton will also miss the next two games due to a back injury. He underwent an MRI which revealed no structural damage. Melton missed 44 games last season with the Sixers because of back problems.
We have more from the Pacific Division:
- Clippers center Ivica Zubac signed a three-year, $58.6MM extension this offseason and has been a force on both ends in the early going, earning a nomination for conference Player of the Week. “It’s only three games, but I’m trying to bring the consistency,” he said, per Law Murray of The Athletic. “I’m trying to keep it up as long as I can. I’m trying to bring the same stuff every night to the teammates so they can count on me on the defensive end and the offensive end. They can count on me to do that — protect the rim, score in the post, finish around the rim.” Zubac is averaging 22.7 points, 14.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.
- Zubac didn’t earn Player of the Week honors due to Anthony Davis‘ overpowering start. The Lakers big man averaged 34 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.7 steals in the first three games. “Being aggressive every time down the floor. Being dominant every game,” Davis told Mark Medina of Athlon Sports. “Doing my job, doing my part in helping this team do what we got to do. That’s taking on a matchup defensively, taking on a role offensively, being a leader of the team, carrying us in games, playoffs, whatever it takes.”
- Keon Ellis appeared in 57 games for the Kings, including 21 starts, last season. However, he never left the bench against the Lakers on Saturday. Coach Mike Brown indicated prior to Sacramento’s game on Monday that Ellis is a victim of numbers. “It’s just about a minutes crunch more than anything else, and second it’s a situation thing,” Brown said, per Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link).
I’m glad big Z got paid. He’s always been more than solid and is easily outplaying his contract to date. Steph….ditch those low cuts, brother. Not even landing or stepping on guys’ feet. Non contact rolling and hurting yourself.
Nrg82, good point on Z.
Steph wears some pretty impressive Contraptions on his ankles so I’m not sure if switching from low tops to high tops would help him?
His ankles are strapped in pretty well with those large plastic form-fitted braces and velcro holding everything together.
But yes it’s interesting that he’ll roll his ankle on his own and without stepping on someone’s foot or Landing on someone after grabbing a rebound or jumping on defense.
He’ll be at ground level and just roll his ankle. Shows how weak they really are from so many Sprains, especially early in his career.
I’m just thankful for every game and appreciate him for what he’s done because at any point he could tear something in a major way and not come back to what he is. That would be a big loss and I hope it never happens.
Higher cut and strapping tape is still much safer. If you come down on someone’s foot, you’re in trouble regardless. Thanks Kobe for making low cuts cool. I know ankles, I’ve had an ankle fusion.
Ouch !! Does that mean like Bill walton? Locked in a certain position, or just a couple of Bones fused together and you can still rotate or move your ankle a little? Either way sounds rough.
@ Gary. Correct, locked in @ 90°.
Yikes. Walking can’t be a pleasurable experience for the first couple of years until maybe you get used to it? Wow thanks for sharing.
Yep, shoes with a rocker sole help.
Bro I my ankle coming off the sidewalk. Once you have it bad in the ankles they hardly got the snap back.
Yep. Ive had 3 sprains on my left ankle. Luckily Ive never had a complete tear but the pain/discomfort never goes away and the range of motion never returns.
Definitely makes you appreciate these guys and what their bodies go through. Seems like the ankle demon has taken a lot of us out lol.
Nonsense on curry.
Thats Curry, Melton, Wiggins all out.
Would love to see some Dray-Slomo-Moody-Buddy-Podz. Would love to see Moody average 35 MPG in these non-Curry games.
Moody would play the Wiggins minutes. Moody will play minutes in the non-Wiggins games.
Moody is a poor ball handler and cannot dribble against pressure. You’ll notice he gives it up immediately or loses the ball and falls down sort of like Stephen Jackson used to do.
And so I see you have Moody probably as the small forward where he belongs because you list Hield as probably your shooting guard at 6-4. It’s nice that you’re starting to see the light.
So it’s not Curry’s minutes he’s taking. Podski will do that. Plus Draymond handling the ball more than he usually does, as well as slow-mo playing some point forward.
Plus I’m wondering if they call up Beekman for spot duty at the one? Probably not, it just crossed my mind.
But sure, Moses will get plenty of Wiggins minutes. Maybe up to 25? But the sea will definitely not be parted for him to waltz to the basket. He’ll have to earn it.
I personally dont want Moody at the 3, but this is a fresh look I think that specific 5 will cook the Pelicans with. Podz isnt very good Gary, he’s literally going to max out as a GP2 style player. Melton and Moody have way higher ceilings. Podz should be maxing out at 10-15 MPG on this team. He stinks defensively and is worthless against bigs. Offensively he’s a very poor scorer compared with Moody and unless all 5 guys are playing lightning-fast, Podz speed creates turnovers and bad plays. His energy is to his detriment right now, he needs to know when to tone it down and up.
“Moody is a poor ball handler and cannot dribble against pressure. You’ll notice he gives it up immediately or loses the ball and falls down sort of like Stephen Jackson used to do.”
LMAO! You cant go one day without making up some new thing to hate Moody about. You have been wrong about all of them and will continue to be.
We’ll both be glued to the TV tomorrow night watching the NBA on TNT. I won’t miss a single moment of Moody’s minutes I guarantee you that.
I hope he does well because he is a good kid. I just wish he would Sprint once in a while.
All your points are valid Davey. Go Warriors tomorrow night and we’re lucky we’re playing the Pelicans right now. And not only once, but we get them TWICE !! Glory to God !!
Oh, and not “to hate Moody about.” Rather it’s: “to criticize Moody’s game about.”
To me there’s a pretty big difference.
I’d be honored to get to know the man and experience his friendship as a person. I think he’s polite and carries himself and lives his life in an honorable and respectful manner. I think he’ll do whatever the team asks him to and he works hard. These are all attributes every young man should strive for.
Oh and you think I’m rough on Moody? You should see what I wrote about Zach Edey. Yikes !! Mr Stonehands gets away with nothing on my watch. Great college center !! Not an NBA player by any stretch of the imagination.
Memphis picked him 7th or 9th? Wow teams have been fooled before but sheesh, he got one over on the league on draft day.
This is almost bad as some of the Sacramento Kings or Golden State Warriors picks of just a few years ago.
Thomas Robinson, Willie cauley-stein, Jimmer Fredette? Todd Fuller, Patrick O’Bryant, Michael Pietrus, Juri Welsh, Adonal Foyle, Ike Diogu?
Agents have been pulling the wool over the eyes of NBA Scouts and GMS for years lol.
Keon not playing is puzzling. From a fan prospective, it’s hard to not view the last minute move to shed salary and the emphasis on giving Huerter minutes as a fast track to moving on from Kevin. Seems like they want to brute force stats to land a half way decent deal.
It’s only been two games and the team as a whole has struggled mightily from 3 so it’s hard to place blame on Huerter or Mike Brown. I just can’t imagine that having a solid defender on the floor more often hurts the Kings in these close games more than Huerter’s offense has been helping.
Just saw the Shams story that GSW is moving Kuminga to the bench:
“Intriguing development in a fourth season when no extension was complete for both sides and team has discussed setting him up to take the next step.”
Seems even more extraordinary in light of Wiggins’ and Curry’s absence tonight, and after Kerr said after the 2nd game he wanted to stick with this starting lineup as long as it takes.
Hope I’m wrong, but this portends badly for both Kuminga and the organization as far as our rep for handling young players.
That post was from before the NOLA game.
Winning cures all :—)
Right now Moody is playing better than Jonathan Kuminga. Preseason JK looked pretty good but once the regular season started he’s been playing a little bit tight.
Moody’s looked great. You roll with what works right now and I think Steve Kerr said he’s trying to figure out his starting lineup and THEN once he finds it, THEN he’ll stick with it for a while.
I don’t think he’s there yet and now there’s a delay because of Curry and Wiggins injuries.
