Jordan Poole was a little “quiet” and “standoffish” during his first year with the Wizards, according to Kyle Kuzma, who believes that was out of character for the 25-year-old guard and notes that he seems more comfortable entering his second season in D.C.
“I don’t think last year he necessarily was (Jordan Poole last season),” Kuzma said, per Varun Shankar of The Washington Post. “… We have the same agency, and I know for a fact from conversations that was not him. And I think that I see more of what Jordan Poole is now.”
As Shankar details, the Wizards’ plan to get the ball into Poole’s hands more and let him serve as a primary play-maker is one key reason for his increased comfort level. He had 16 points, six assists, and no turnovers in 22 minutes of action during Sunday’s preseason opener vs. Toronto.
“(Playing point guard has) allowed me to have more influence, more impact, get my hands on the offense,” Poole said, adding that his goal in his new role is to be “aggressive” and to “find ways to get my teammates involved.”
Here’s more from around the Southeast:
- The preseason game between the Heat and Hawks originally scheduled to be played at Kaseya Center in Miami this Thursday has been postponed until Wednesday, October 16 due to Hurricane Milton, the Heat announced today (Twitter link).
- This year’s No. 1 overall pick, Hawks forward Zaccharie Risacher, isn’t coming into the league with nearly as much as hype or pressure as some past top picks, but as his pro career begins, he’s still eager to reward the club’s confidence in him, as Lauren Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution details.
- The three-year, $58.65MM contract extension that Wendell Carter signed with the Magic features a third-year team option, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link). That means the deal will only include about $37.65MM in fully guaranteed money, with a $21MM option for 2028/29.
- Having gotten a head coaching opportunity after what he estimates was 10 interviews with teams over the years, Charles Lee is focused on building a culture of togetherness with the Hornets, writes Jared Weiss of The Athletic. “I think that we try to talk about right now just our competitive habits and how we all affect each other,” Lee said. “Knowing that if one person isn’t holding up their end of the bargain or their end of the competitive bargain, then all of us are going to feel that.”
Poole’s downfall was getting paid that big contract. That is all he wanted and once he got it his desire to be a great disappeared.
I think we all know what “his downfall” was, arc89. Rhymes with Baymond Breen…
But also: Poole was never Him. Just a Curry-gravity merchant all along. Put anyone next to Curry (like Podz) and they will look a lot better than they are (Podz making all-rookie 1st team).
Before the money he was the first one in the gym working out. After he didn’t care. Curry did get him open looks but Poole couldn’t hit open shots with Wizards.
Dude was on his way to superstar status after that Championship run, got paid, ego grew and he fell off very fast.
Nah, Poole was simply a Curry gravity merchant the whole time. No Curry = Poole stinks. Seen this before.
The year they beat the Celtics he put in crazy work before the season (according to Bay Area news). He was under control, his 3 was solid but as soon as he got paid he just went backwards
getting his face bashed in during practice, having someone from the team leak the video to embarrass him, and then his team basically saying he earned it – I wonder if that had any sort of effect on him wanting to be in the gym
So basically Poole is only happy when it’s all about him. No idea how the Warriors didn’t factor in this guy’s mental makeup and personality when they gave him that extension, not to mention his defensive issues and poor shot selection. Can’t make a more boneheaded move.
Kerr knew he had these problems. It was Myers who pulled the trigger.
Never said I blamed Kerr. 100% on Myers.
I agree. The Warriors were ready to cut Poole in his 2nd season. They gave him one last chance, and he responded with a great 3rd season. Myers should have let him reach Restricted Free Agency. Let him prove the 3rd season wasn’t a fluke.
That is one thing I hate about Warrior’s announcers they never call out players like Poole that plays bad defense. The casual fan that doesn’t know basketball don’t see all those missed defensive assignments.
Why do all of you talk about Poole’s contract like the Warriors didn’t get out of that deal? Easily too. I mean you guys speak about it like Pooles still on the roster.
Not turning the ball over is big step for Poole. Maybe he has learned his lesson. He needs to continually work on his game. It is what got him that big contract.
Funny. Davey J has discovered a new word, “gravity”. I wonder what podcast he got that from?
When he was A’sfsintheUK he used the term extensively.
Not a team player… good riddance from warriors…Shea mentioned lack of defence and poor shot selection…not dependable…can be fun to watch…if you are a fan of the opposition team
