The Warriors and guard Moses Moody have agreed to a three-year, $39MM rookie scale contract extension, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN’s Shams Charania (Twitter link).
A report by Charania over the weekend suggested that a Moody extension was more likely than one for teammate Jonathan Kuminga, who is seeking a more lucrative contract. The deadline for rookie scale extensions is Monday at 6 p.m. ET.
Moody hasn’t been able to crack the starting lineup during his three seasons, except as a fill-in, but he’s established himself as a reliable reserve. He’s appeared in 181 regular season games (23 starts), averaging 5.9 points in 14.3 minutes. Last season, he appeared in 66 games (nine starts), posting averages of 8.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 17.5 minutes. He shot 46.2% from the field and 36% on 3-point attempts.
The No. 14 pick of the 2021 draft, Moody is still just 22 years old and continues to develop his overall game. How Moody slots into the Warrriors’ rotation this season remains to be seen. He’l be battling Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton for backcourt minutes with Stephen Curry the only surefire starter.
Moody will make $5.8MM this season before the extension kicks in. He’ll be the fifth 2021 first-rounder to agree to an extension, joining Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes and Franz Wagner, Marc Stein tweets.
The contract will be fully guaranteed, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater tweets. He’ll still be trade eligibile this season but his outgoing salary would count as $5.8MM while Golden State would have to take in $11.2MM.
Great move to lock Moody up for 3 years. At $13M/yr, it’s considerably more than recent deals with comparable players would suggest, and $5M more than I’d insisted was his ceiling (apologies to Michol) before the preseason. Moody has stepped up when he needed to, and the Warriors expect further growth.
Moody is a part of the 10 man rotation. Period
But is this an investment in the 2025-26 and beyond, or does Moody start immediately to get minutes in 2023-24 commensurate with his $13M, placing him before Hield, Melton, and GP2?
My view is that Moody should be the first SG off the bench, ahead of Hield, Melton and GP2.
As for the prospective Kuminga extension, the Moody deal helps to calibrate expectations… upwards.
Uh oh.
Massive bargain, GSW looking to become another juggernaut starting this season…the dynasty continues…go give JK whatever he wants…
Juggernaut lol. Alright I’m out now, enjoy.
Good signing. Now let’s see him become a star. He been showing potential this year. Hopefully he gets enough minutes this year.
If Kerr gives up the “Moody is a stretch 3”, then the 96 total “guard” minute breakdowns will look like:
Curry: 33
Melton: 19
Moody: 16
Buddy: 16
Podz and the rest: 12
This team has so many units that can cook with or without Curry, along with Steph going bigtime sicko mode in the Olympics, I get the feeling we might see a lot of “Steph 4Q DNPs” this season, which will open up the minutes to whoever, likely Moody-Podz or Moody-Melton. I am all-in and love this team, it really is 2021-22 all over, I cant wait til the real tests happen on that early Rockets-Wizards-Celtics-Cavs-Thunder road trip. We can gauge a lot off that run.
Kerr isn’t dropping Podz’ minutes from 26 to less than 12 per game..
You got paid nothing for this analysis, and it was still too much.
Podz only got those minutes because of Draymond’s suspensions. Now Moody gets some of those…sorry to burst your bubble but Podz is the odd man out now.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but there’s a disconnect between your head and reality.
Why? Because you say so? They aren’t going to pay Moody $13M a year to play 5 MPG. You’re just wrong. Eat it.
Dude this is why I give you s***! You have bonehead takes and then hyper defensively go after anyone that questions your terrible takes…. Podz/Steph/Dray those are your only guys making plays for others consistently. They will all play consistently.
Also while Moody looked good this pre season a lot of his min were coming against guys who wont be in the NBA this season so take it with a grain of salt, and he is still getting blown by by most faster guards in pre season.
The reason Moses was getting yo yo’d was because his defense has always been suspect and so if his shot wasnt falling he was getting dropped. He can guard Brunson/Luka type guards who are slow and physical but will get smoked by guys like Ja. If he can play point of attack defender with 6’6″ length and good wing span he will get min.
You know why Podz/Milton will play over him to start the year? It starts with a D! He can eat Heilds min if he is able to out shoot him or get into a bigger role with better D.
@ChapmansTrolling My takes have been proven correct time and time again, and that enrages you, you still call them “bonehead” even though they aren’t – rinse wash repeat. If you hate my takes so much there’s a mute button right there?
Why are you so concerned with my posts when you can easily mute me? I am always right and you are always wrong. I defend myself and you always come in to pile on like a coward – why wont you just talk basketball? Does not matter, I am now muting you. Argue at a wall, you lunatic.
They also aren’t going to cut Podz’ minutes more than half, just because you’ve posted 100 times about how overrated you think he is. Kerr won’t see this, and even if he did, he isn’t listening to you.
Kerr picked Podz to be part of the Team USA Select alongside TJD, after a very good rookie season. He isn’t going from that, to picking up garbage time minutes as the 5th guard, under the same coach.
You’re not analysing, you’re hoping and wishing.
Best +/- on the team last season over Steph. The last time that happened was over a decade ago. Im of course not counting the year he played 4 games…
@Cam ok sure buddy, Moses Moody is getting 5 MPG at $13M a year, that will totally happen!
You dont know ball!!!
@cam muting you too, you are too stupid to engage with honestly. I called Moody being a star on this team months ago and these losers all dogpiled on me over and over. Now my predictions have come true they’re all backtracking and acting like I didn’t call it. Pathetic honestly.
He just got the MLE for 3 years off his rookie deal man. Wont even be that by the 3rd year. Thats not a lot of money in the modern NBA thats also not star money.
FYI it’d be the hypothetical trade partner, rather than Golden State, whose salary would be $11.2 for salary-matching purposes.
GSW can only take back 5.2 because that is whats outgoing and theyre near the hard cap. So You would be trading him for a 5.2M salary where the other team has to send 6M more out somewhere else. Its called poison pill provision for a reason.
Thats a value contract for GSW, could become a steal. Hopefully he gets more minutes and a bigger role (and lives up to it).
Interested in seeing what Kuminga gets if he gets an extension.
You’ve gotta have contracts to make trades.
$13M for a bench player is crazy work. Warriors making a lot of bad decisions the last 5 or so years.
2022 was more than 5 or so years ago huh?
MDJ deserves GM of the year for how he correctly spotted 2021-22 as the blueprint, and to not chase the top heavy, KD-style big 3 star lineups. Do what works, and try and build a stronger roster than 2021-22. Done. Buddy, Melton, Lindy and Slomo are all perfect system fits. Skys the limit with this team as-is. 55-60 wins easy.
Not even 10% of the cap next season. Welcome to the new CBA baby
