A left ankle sprain forced Grizzlies center Zach Edey to the inactive list for Tuesday’s game against Denver and will keep him sidelined for more time beyond that. Speaking to reporters ahead of Tuesday’s contest, head coach Taylor Jenkins said that Edey would be considered “week-to-week” as a result of his ankle injury (Twitter link via Michael Wallace of Grizzlies.com).
That’s a somewhat vague timeline, but it suggests Edey will miss at least Wednesday’s game vs. Philadelphia and Saturday’s matchup with the Bulls. Memphis will be in action on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday next week, so we’ll see if the rookie big man is able to make it back for any of those contests.
Here’s more out of Memphis:
- In just his third game back after missing the start of the season due to a left tibial stress reaction, Grizzlies wing Vince Williams exited Tuesday’s loss in the second quarter due to a right ankle injury, writes Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal. It’s not yet clear if the injury will cause Williams to miss additional games, but I’d be a little surprised if he suits up for Wednesday’s contest vs. the Sixers.
- Injuries to Edey, Williams, and star point guard Ja Morant have been setbacks for a Grizzlies team that was finally on the verge of getting healthier, but Memphis players remain confident in their ability to withstand the plague of injuries and remain firmly in the playoff mix, Cole writes for The Commercial Appeal. “I feel like that’s been one of our stronger assets to our group — just staying together and weathering the storm,” Desmond Bane said. “And they will be back. It takes time. … When they’re back, everything gonna be clicking.”
- Scotty Pippen Jr. added that he believes the Grizzlies’ unfortunate run of injuries since the start of the 2023/24 season has just been a matter of bad luck. “I have been other places before, and over here, we are definitely taking care of our bodies,” Pippen said. “The trainers, everyone is on top of it. … A lot of these are just freak injuries. I don’t want to say it’s anything we are doing because everyone is in the weight room and everyone is taking care of their bodies — cold tub, hot tub, all of that.”
- In the latest episode of the Draymond Green Show (YouTube link), Warriors forward Draymond Green took aim at the Grizzlies, their head coach, and their rookie center, as Jonah Dylan of The Memphis Commercial Appeal relays. Green referred to Jenkins as “too emotional” and claimed he sets a bad example for his team, criticizing the Grizzlies’ head coach for his post-game comments about a foul Green committed on Edey that was later upgraded to a flagrant 1. “(Jenkins was) crying about a little take foul on the big man (Edey), so what he’s going to do in turn is cry,” Green said. “He’s supposed to protect Ja Morant. You’re setting him up to where Ja Morant’s going to be protecting him. He’s a big man. If (Jenkins) didn’t come out crying for his big man, who then came out crying, he’s big enough to possibly have fooled people that he could be a little tough. And now nobody believes him.”
i do not understand why Jenkins hate the warriors so much. When his player broke GP2’s arm he claimed it was a normal play and Brooks didn’t deserve a suspension. When his player did a hard foul on a warrior player he argued that it wasn’t a foul. His team many times are out of control on the court just shows he is emotional coach.
If anyone knows about coaches and PGs protecting big men it’s Draymond. Kerr and Curry have been protecting Dray his entire career. Kerr always makes excuses for Dray’s BS and the league has been more lenient than it should be on Green is because he’s played next to one of the biggest and brightest stars in the league for over a decade.
Edey is the bigger person, he walked away and Dray’s lucky he did. One of these days one of these guys may well fight back.
SMH Jenkins is a cry baby. Don’t forget he ran onto the court to stop a play and only got a T instead of being thrown out against the Lakers in the playoffs. Jenkins rant about Green was just him playing the victim card like always.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great ball player and a future Hall of Famer but Dray is a crybaby. He’s 6’6″ 230 pounds and somehow has a Napoleon complex.
Dray’s problem is he can never let go of things. He also over reacts on things that should be let go. Like the beef with Gobert he over reacted when he saw Gobert grab Thompson. He didn’t think just reacted to the situation. Many times i watch Green and say just shut up and let it go.
Draymond Green is such a hypocrite. How many technicals has he accumulated because he can’t control his temper? Now he’s going to say someone else is too emotional? What a hypocrite. Just shut up dude.
Both statements can be true, Jenkins is/can be a crybaby who gets too emotional during games, and Draymond continues to show why outside of the BayArea as the most villainous player in the NBA today.
FWIW: I blame Adam Silver for not taking care of this a while back, but Warriors were drawing ratings and it would hurt the league’s image. David Stern would never have allowed this to happen under his watch.
Oh and it wasn’t a basketball play, I’ve seen Rodman kicked a photographer in the groin, wasn’t a basketball play. I’ve seen close lines from Lambier claiming it was a basketball play. Stop justifying his actions and deflecting blame elsewhere. He is what he is at this point in his career. I’m just waiting for him to piss off Jokic but we know Draymond would never do that to him, and only goes for the soft players in the NBA anyways to asset his dominance and feed his ego.
The last paragraph there is a masterpiece. Thank you.
Sarcasm? Lol I’m just asking.
One thing you left out Green doesn’t understand he has a target on his back with officials especially young officials. Things that most players can get away with Green gets called for. Like that game he was just complaining about a no call on a obvious travel for the first T. The Ref gave him a T but didn’t do the same for a player arguing a foul call more animated.
If he doesn’t understand he has had a target on his back with officials for the last decade, then he’s dumber than he looks.
Reputation in the NBA goes wherever you go, you cannot escape it. Ask Pandemic P in Phily or Fat Harden. Lol
I meant assert his dominance. Damn it i had a typo. Lol
Back in the day, Bill Laimbeer clotheslinIng someone WAS a basketball play. Taking out the shortstop on a double play WAS a baseball play. Now, a lineman gets a penalty for a “headslap” on another dude who’s wearing a helmet.
I miss the old days of my yoot
Are you suggesting Stern wouldn’t have cared about ratings? I don’t buy it. It was a very different NBA when he took over and he needed a different approach to meet the moment. But if he were to govern in today’s NBA I’d see him following a similar path to Silver. Could be wrong obviously.
Agree completely on Draymond, though.
Stern was the commish 1984-2014, so he was there for the entirety of the Bad boys/Larry Johnson vs Alonzo/Malice at the Palace. I think he would have made Draymond the poster boy if he was alive and did these types of things.
Draymond Green calling anyone “too emotional” is pure lunacy. Calling someone a crybaby while going out of your way to cry is also insane
