Kings assistant Doug Christie will be elevated to take Mike Brown‘s spot on the bench following Brown’s dismissal, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that Christie is Sacramento’s new interim head coach.
Christie, a former NBA shooting guard, spent five of his 15 seasons as a player in Sacramento. That five-year stretch from 2000-05 was the most successful run of his career, as he started all 355 games he played and earned Defensive Player of the Year votes for a Kings team that won at least one playoff series in four straight years.
After retiring as a player, Christie spent some time as a color commentator for Kings game before being hired by the franchise as an assistant during the 2021 offseason.
Christie was hired under Luke Walton, remaining in his role as an assistant when the club parted ways with Walton and promoted Alvin Gentry to replace him during the 2021/22 season, and again when the Kings hired Brown in 2022.
Although Christie has never formally held a head coaching position, he has gained some experience on the job, having stepped in for Gentry in December 2021 when the Kings’ interim coach missed time with COVID-19. Christie also coached Sacramento’s Summer League team in 2024.
It’s unclear when the Kings plan to launch their search for a permanent head coach and whether Christie will receive serious consideration for the full-time role.
Why even bother trying to get this job full time. The owner will fire you when he wakes up the wrong way
Classless owner
I could get this team a championship
What do you want him to do? They lost 5 home games in a row and Brown appeared to have lost the locker room. I guess he could have fired Monte but it’s all the same in the end.
Two years ago in the off season they they traded their 1st for cap relief to resign Barnes and Len, then did nothing for a year. Both win awards and did nothing. Fox is playing like trash at times too. This team has done nothing to improve other than the Sabonis and DeRozan deals. Brown got them into the playoffs. If they don’t make a trade now with Murray then that’s all folks. Back to the draft boards
Doug Christie’s most famous moment is still his runway fight with Rick Fox. Really a pillow fight at the end.
Runway fight? You mean when he clocked fox on the jaw in the middle of the court?
It doesn’t matter who is coaching because these guys are terrible. Had a magical run a few seasons ago but it was fool’s gold. Like the Timberwolves and Hawks before them. Clown organizations aren’t winning anything in the NBA
De’Aaron Fox trade coming next.
As a kings fan they should trade him now, it would jump start the inevitable rebuild. But no they’re gonna continually run it back to no avail
Trade Murray plus others for Butler
Hopefully Fox can be traded to the Spurs. Kings are the dumbest team in the league. Sabonis is a PF you stupid organization!
Mike Brown gave Kings instant credibility. This is not the MikenBrown of 15 years ago. He is an experiemced, battle tested, 6 yrs as assistant at GS, and very respected in nba. Kings overperformed the last 2 yrs and it’s totally understandable to take a step back becore taking 2 steps forward. Besides, why not wait til offseaon to make a change? Why now??? It’s total bs. Why give him major raise in the offseason? No one will want to come to Kings now. Fire the owner!
Yup Fox should definitely ask to be dealt…
In terms of potential Fox trades what do you think suits them best…
1. Fox for Jalen Green, Tari Eason and a first (in the offseason once Greens contract takes affect)
Devin Carter Jalen Green Tari Eason Keegan Murray and Domontas Sabonis
Monk keep his bench role, trade DeRozan and do your best to get rid of Hueter aswell. Lyles can walk in FA. That wouldn’t be a bad situation at all for the Kings but I don’t think their front office ever makes the right decision so this likely won’t happen.
For Houston they could trade Brooks for an expiring deal, clear him off the books and waive FVV which would create enough money to go after someone like Ingram, Butler or Kuminga.
2. Fox for Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and 3 firsts
Carter Vassell Murray Sochan Sabonis again keep monk and trade the rest.
Basically the same as the Houston return and SG and a 3 and D forward but both players aren’t as good and you get more picks instead.
Spurs pair Wemby with Fox and keep Castle. Fox back with Barnes again, they could even look to clear cap space and bring in more talent.
These two would be my early favourites
Agree with you. Spurs for sure…Johnson, Jones, 5 or 6 picks (whatever the going rate is) for Fox. Wemby and Fox, oh my.
San antonio will still have more draft capital than most and could easily have cap space. Kings get a treasure chest of picks. Seems great for both.
Jones is a good shout for a mid season trade as he fills the PG gap but I think one of Castle or Vassell needs for value reasons and cause 3 can’t go into 2.
Vassell Jones and a bunch of first works
The kings team Christie was on was so much fun. Not sure he’s a coach but hey, what they gonna do. I’ll never forget Kobe going all beast mode and trucking Bibby square in the chest and with an elbow to the face. Foul on Bibby lol. Was just one of many eyebrow raises in a long list of nba/laker rigged moments. That kings team was sic.
All these players today are uncoachable. Weakest era ever
I mean, anyone is gonna be better than Brown, right?
He underperformed with a talented team, so he was given enough time, I would have chopped him in the summer after missing the playoffs.
NBA trying hard to get Fox to the Spurs. Silver wants Wemby as the new face so all the special treatment comes with that
Fox to spurs.
Bruce Brown for Dillon Brooks.
Regardless of how hard Silver pushes Fox to SAS, there is no reason to believe that the trade price won’t be in the same neighborhood as the deals for PG13, DM, Durant, Harden (to BKN) and others. His age, position and history of health all suggest he’ll be one of the more expensive homes in that neighborhood if not the most expensive. He’s not getting to UFA pre-trade, and would be stupid to try to (because, best case, it would cost him almost 100 mm in guaranteed $$).
All the predicate deals had at least one high end young talent with All Star potential (SGA, LM, Bridges, J.Allen), even with a full slate of FRPs and swaps (at least 5 unprotected combined, and as many as 7, Bridges even went for 5 himself, along with another FRP). Only player I see that maybe fits that description is Castle, and its debatable. SAS has the ATL picks, but they don’t look as good as they did, and by the time this deal is done (off season) one of those will have been made. SAS’s own picks going forward figure to be at the bottom of the draft for awhile. Of course, SAS can have players emerge during the rest of the season. Or either they or ATL, at least this year, could get into the lottery and possibly get a pick at the top of the draft (SAS seems to get different ping pong balls than the rest of the league). But guys underperforming their contracts, or that are too raw to project, generally don’t lead deals for young superstars. ORL and HOU, at least, could use Fox’s skill set and have more to offer.
Dude it’s Silver. He will do whatever he wants no matter how bogus or rigged it looks
Nope. Silver is too much of a wimp to do anything without cover, via consensus, etc. He won’t want to appear as if he’s screwing one small market team for another, so he’ll be OK with the high price.
