DECEMBER 23: The Knicks have announced the signing of Shamet (Twitter link). Both roster moves are now official.
DECEMBER 22: The Knicks have agreed to a standard contract with guard Landry Shamet, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports. It’s a one-year deal, James Edwards III of The Athletic tweets.
To make room for Shamet and remain under the second-apron hard cap, the Knicks have waived forward Matt Ryan, the team’s PR department tweets.
It’s not surprising New York brought back Shamet. who dislocated his shoulder during the preseason while participating in Knicks training camp. He remained with the Westchester Knicks in the G League while rehabbing his injury and the NBA club was simply waiting for him to get back to full strength. Coach Tom Thibodeau commented on Shamet’s status a week ago.
“It’s good to see him out there healthy again,” Thibodeau said then. “(But) there’s a number of things that have to happen before he can play with us.”
Shamet was likely to make the opening night roster prior to the injury. He had signed a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary contract during the offseason.
He was waived before opening night. Shamet appeared in 46 games with Washington last season and averaged 7.1 points in 15.8 minutes per contest. He has also played for Philadelphia, the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn and Phoenix in 348 total regular season outings.
Ryan was inked to a non-guaranteed contract in early November and appeared in nine Knicks games, but logged very few minutes in those outings.
Assuming he goes unclaimed on waivers, Ryan will count for $621,439 in dead money on New York’s books. The cap hit for Shamet’s contract will depend on when he officially signs — if it’s officially finalized on Monday, the deal will carry a cap charge of $1,343,690 for the Knicks.
Nice, dude belongs in the nba and looked a good fit for NY. Good to see New York look after him through injury and give him a chance.
Shamet is a super underrated player
It’s great to have him back. I didn’t think he’d be back so soon.
Excellent. Shamet is underrated and should really help this team.
They also sent Kolek, Hukporti and Dadiet to the G League, so who’s left on the bench (after Deuce, Payne, Sims, Achiuwa and now Shamet)? Toppin? Mitch (even while injured)? That’s 12 at most. Don’t they have to have at least 14 (if not 15)?
Those player regularly go back and forth. Thibs wants them to play there. Stay ready be ready..
Teams must suit up 8-15 players for any given game. They must have 14-15 on standard contracts (we have the current 9-man rotation + 3 rookies + Mitch + Shamet). Up to three of those can be sent to the G-League at any time. In addition to them are 3 two-way players (Toppin, McCullar, Buie) who can be called up or sent down at any time as well.
I’ve heard the plan is for Buie to be released and Ryan to take his two-way slot.
Getting Landry back is huge. He was great in preseason. He’s a Thibs kind of player. He shoots the three well. Excellent defender. Hope he’s healthy. Makes Knicks deep. Slowly but surely Knicks will be at full load. Like it….
Only missing Mitch now. Can’t wait to get him back.
A spot is being held open for Ryan Boatwright. it’s time he returned and got repaid for everything he did at Connecticut. 3/ 9 million fully guaranteed
From these comments, seems like every team other than the Knicks have really missed the boat on Shamet.
They’ll probably be kicking themselves in June!
I am surprised he didn’t get a guaranteed offer before the injury. Or maybe he did, but still preferred the Knicks and was willing to risk it
I mean, yeah. Any team without a bench shooter should be kicking themselves for not signing him.
Once MR comes back, I think a tall, athletic wing for the bench is the only thing they will be missing for the stretch run
Shamet looked quite good in preseason. Used basically as shooter /cutter. Played a lot with Payne and Deuce with Sims and Precious as bigs in a very fast pace lineup. We’ll see if it carries over.
Landry wasn’t offered a contract. Not even by Knicks. He was invited to try and make team. And played his way on team. Teams definitely blew it with him. Landry Knows Bridges and Payne well. They played in Phoenix. And had a good run there. I wondered why no one picked him up. Now I’m just glad we did. IMO Knicks can still use another scorer. TJ Warren is a guy we can add. That’s if they don’t make a trade.
Latest on Mitch is. It could be February before he’s back. That’s too close to TD. So something could go down. We’ve already seen Knicks not afraid to make trades. This is the yr you go all out ….. NYK
Sorry for your revisionist history but Shamet was absolutely offered a contract by the Knicks. An Exhibit 9.
