The Hawks acquired one of the best defenders in the NBA when they obtained Dyson Daniels in this past summer’s Dejounte Murray trade, Jared Weiss of The Athletic writes. Daniels’ 6.5 deflections per game so far this season represent the highest average since the NBA started tracking the stat.
“Dyson is a menace and I’m excited he gets to show that more this year,” said teammate Larry Nance Jr. “Deep wing and guards situation in New Orleans, then he comes here and gets put in a situation where he can grow and expand and make mistakes without having another player breathing down your neck for minutes.”
Weiss explores Daniels’ defensive prowess and how he became such an effective weapon on that end of the court. He’s averaging a league-high 3.1 steals along with 13.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 0.9 blocks per contest.
“I think the trade for him was a massive blessing in disguise. Well, not even in disguise,” Daniels’ friend Josh Giddey said. “He’s just had the opportunity to flourish and show his true colors. He’s one of the best defenders in the world. He’s always had that defensive ability and I’m glad it’s on full display for everyone to see. … Maybe I’m biased because we’re very close, but in my opinion, he’s the runaway for Defensive Player of the Year.”
We have more from the Southeast Division:
- The Hawks reset their franchise’s trajectory by trading for Daniels, cap expert Yossi Gozlan writes on his subscriber-only Substack. While Atlanta is still in play-in territory, the team replenished its draft capital by acquiring two first-rounders alongside Daniels in the Murray trade, as well as a strong rotation player in Nance.
- As we wrote on Friday, Magic star Paolo Banchero remains out but had his injury designation changed to “return to competition reconditioning” as he nears his first game back since October. He spoke on Friday to reporters, including The Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede, about the checkpoints that remain before he can play again, explaining that he still hasn’t participated in any five-on-five scrimmaging and hasn’t done full contact, both of which are precursors to returning from an injury. “I’ve been trying to get back since I first went out, really,” Banchero said. “Now, it’s just going to be the fun part of getting back into actually playing. I feel I’ve just been showing up to the arena, just to watch for a long time now, so I’m going to just be excited just to be suiting up to play, warming up and getting back out here with the team.“
- Heat guard Dru Smith underwent successful surgery on Friday for his ruptured left Achilles, the team announced (via Twitter). He’s expected to miss the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
I would not have expected that Daniels/Murray trade to immediately be in the Hawks’ favor from a performance standpoint.
I’m admittedly a fair weather Hawks fan lol…but it’s crazy what some actual defense can do for a team no?
It’s the East…
Any small change can make a big difference to a team in the Hawks position…
Hawks moved the wrong PG for it to matter…
Trae is their version of Embiid… Just without any defensive potential…
As long as he is on the roster, their just selling fun tickets… Not a contender…
Murray hasn’t been exactly lighting it up this season. At least with Trae you get a dynamic passer. Murray’s signature offensive move is to come off a screen and jack up a mid range jumper. Murray’s calling card was his defense. He hasn’t been very good on that end sense he left San Antonio.
Perhaps Trae Isn’t the answer but perhaps they traded for the right Point Guard. If Daniels can refine his jumper he could be that guy. He played PG most of his career before the Hawks shoehorned him at SG.
Murray isn’t a star… But he also isn’t being as badly overpaid to be one either…
In a vacuum you take Murray everyday…
Easier to build around, doesn’t have to be the focus of any trade or free agent decision… Is a complimentary player to the stars on the team… And on top of that, far easier to trade under the new CBA…
The problem with the Hawks was Trae isn’t a star… He’s a volume shooter with passing chops… A role player on most teams because his shooting is streaky and doesn’t make up for his defence…
The idea that Trae has some sort of Steph Curry type gravity just doesn’t hold water… Steph made Draymond Green a champion…
Yeah Murray’s contract looks horrible right now as he has taken a step backwards. Sorry bro you are wrong with this take
I disagree, while I dont believe they can contend for a championship with Trae as the 1st option he still a pretty good point guard and his skills complement the other players in Atlanta very well. DeJounte Murray is a scorer who cant really shoot from 3, Trae is arguably the best passer in the league while being able to stretch the floor, opening it up for his teammates.
It’s the East so they have a shot at the Conference Finals if they can put enough talent on the team… Daniels seems to be a much better fit than Murray was…
But contend against any western team in the Finals or a healthy Boston? Get the brooms it’ll be a sweep…
It’s crazy that Murray still got 2 first round picks after killing the hawks for 3 firsties. Pels are rly just out there to help others
Dyson needs a better nickname than the great barrier thief. Dudes from Bendigo, like thirty hours drive away from said reef. There’s some useless information for you.
Trae and Daniel’s really are the perfect pairing for ATL. Trae provides the offensive be it creating for others, putting up shots from the logo or dropping 30 points per game like it’s nothing. Then Daniels brings the defence, blocking shots, tipping passes, getting steals, he can play just 1v1 or as the help defender. Because of his size he can switch really well and he’s doing well on the boards too.
Jalen Johnson has really stepped it up again this year also, he’s been fantastic and it’s really been Hunter and Risacher sharing the other forward spot. Over time I think everyone wants Zach to get better and own that spot but I think for ATL to be successful they need a full starting 5 plus bench to be good. Centre is the spot which needs attention next. Capela is out of contract and not on the same timeline, and I don’t think Okungwu is anything more than an impact player.
I’d be looking at the draft and FA or maybe even some buy low high potential guys that could make a difference long term.
Draft- Maluach, Queen, Broome and Kalkbrenner
FA- Myles Turner
Trade targets- Nick Richards/Mark Williams, Jalen Duren (possibly), Mitchell Robinson, DeAndre Ayton/Rob Williams and Walker Kessler
