The Warriors acquired a valuable rotation piece in Dennis Schröder this weekend, but it’s possible he won’t last the season with his new team. Schröder can traded again this season and could be part of a package to get a star-level player before February’s trade deadline, according to Marc Stein in his latest Substack post.
Miami’s Jimmy Butler could be among the players targeted by the Warriors, whom many rival teams believe will make a splashier move this season. Stein notes the Warriors aggressively pursued Lauri Markkanen and Paul George during the offseason.
The timing of the Warriors’ trade for Schröder was significant. The latest CBA instituted a new exception that allowed players who are traded by Dec. 16th to be aggregated in another deal before the trade deadline.
Golden State had interest in trading for Nets’ forward Cameron Johnson as well as Schröder but would likely have needed to include Jonathan Kuminga in a deal for both players, Stein suggests.
Here’s more from Stein:
- The Pelicans aren’t inclined to trade young pieces Herbert Jones, Yves Missi and Trey Murphy but they are open to trade inquiries for virtually anyone else on the roster.
- The Lakers aren’t looking to make a blockbuster move but they’d like to add depth and are expected to make at least one trade.
- The Kings are dangling the contracts of Kevin Huerter and Trey Lyles in order to upgrade the roster.
- The Sixers have some interest in a reunion with Paul Reed, who waived by the Pistons on Saturday. However, it’s unlikely they’d attempt to add him prior to the trade deadline in order to maximize their roster and cap flexibility. Reed was waived by Philadelphia during the offseason.

You got to love it when peeps bring up counting stats. Schröder had what four decent seasons is his in his career and never on a great team? The current season is his second best season according to the numbers and he’s on a bad team. Butler on the other hand other than his first three seasons barring injury has had good to great numbers and in the post season Butler has been amazing. Intangibles? Defense, Basketball IQ, consistency and post season numbers. That’s why Butler makes a lot more money than Schröder and is more valuable to a team
Schroeder is a vagabond and it’s laughable to even mention him in the sentence as Jimmy Butler.
PJ Washington is twice the player Jonathan Kuminga is. Offensively, defensively, strength.
Yeh the Mavs know how to get them… Washington, Marshall…not to mention GAfford…and lucked out with Lively… would prefer that to Kuminga, Looney, Wiggins
Umm…Sucking for a long time allows you to acquire assets that help you rebuild. I guess you are new here.
I’ll take Kuminga all day. Plenty of upside still.
PJ avgs over 30 mins for his career. Kuminga just went over 20 mins last yr. Plays 26 mins now. Good 2Way players have to be over 34 mins. Kuminga will be better than good.
I think Kuminga is being given every opportunity right now. PJ Washington hardly receives the ball with all those scorers in front of him.
Reason warriors are not getting Butler is easy. It would cost them Wiggins or Green. That makes the warriors worse not better.
Absolutely correct. Why trade for another 35 year-old broken down guy who can’t stay healthy? The stud they go after has to be a younger guy.
Ask Babey J why he keeps pushing for Butler and the whole Heat team on his fantasy multi team trade.
Seriously, Curry needs help. If he cant get it from Kumingoat, front office needs to get a 2nd star to help him with that. Schroeder is not that 2nd star. He will help but not in a way everybody expects him to.
Too add Klay just dropped 29pts, just sayin.
Klay played no defense as you can tell with the score. Warriors still need a big man in the middle not a all star.
The same can be said for the dubs
Wiggins is in his prime
Wiggins is a better player than Butler next 3 seasons
This season
Wiggins $26 million
Butler $49 million
Yet playoff P was in the picture, go figure. Jimmy gets to go out with one last season at miami, see what they can do playoff time and kuminga gets to try drive his dollars up. Absolutely perfect starting point for sign and trade in the off season.
Yup you’re right about playoff P. But I think he would have been swapped for Chris Paul, and his salary as the major piece. I think that’s the difference here.
But yeah, you’re right. I’m saying Butler is old and mid 30s.., ya well so is Paul George lol. Touché.
Getting Schroder to add to another trade makes sense. They have till TD. I’m sure Warriors have their eye on a few players.
If I am the Pelicans…I am deciding very soon whether to fully tank or not..if they were in the East they could make up the ground to make playoffs/play-in. West so tough, I am thinking tankathon. One player not mentioned as someone they should keep is Hawkins. This guy as a pure shooter on any team seems to have major upside.. Definitely some strong talent to this squad..Murphy looks great and Herb worth hanging onto.
Decision as to what to do with Zion..this must be a nightmare for Pels.
Murray a solid piece on any squad….they must already be tanking! Ingram needs to go for his sake and Pels. Spurs may be an interesting trade partner..
Pelicans are 1-9 vs East …….. please
If Im the Warriors I would make a pretty big offer for either Herb or MIII like multiple 1sts for either on those contracts. They would be the perfect fit with Steph/Dray/Wiggs/Loon for a really good defensive unit with enough shooting and scoring.
Jimmy makes so much sense for GSW
Great defender, happy to not play as the number 1 option but can also run an offence when needed. Solid rebounder, good positional versatility, him and Draymond bringing that dawg. Someone who loves the big moments and preforms in the clutch.
Not to mention GSW’s title window is 2 years long with Curry and Green and Jimmy probably only has two years left aswell. Go hard and try win another title for the next couple years then start over again
