DECEMBER 15: The trade is official, according to press releases from the Warriors and Nets. As detailed below, Brooklyn received Melton, Beekman, and three second-round picks from Golden State in exchange for Schröder and a second-round pick.
As first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link), the Nets received Atlanta’s second-round picks in 2026 and 2028, along with Golden State’s second-rounder in 2029, while the Warriors acquired Miami’s 2025 second-rounder (top-37 protected).
In order to open up a two-way slot for Beekman, Brooklyn waived rookie Yongxi Cui, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear earlier this week.
DECEMBER 14: The Warriors are finalizing an agreement with the Nets to acquire veteran point guard Dennis Schröder, reports Shams Charania of ESPN.
Sources tell Charania that Brooklyn will send Schröder and one second-round pick to Golden State in exchange for injured guard De’Anthony Melton and three second-rounders.
Marc Stein and Jake Fischer (Twitter links), who first reported that Brooklyn’s return would include Melton’s expiring contract and second-round compensation, suggest the deal is on track to be completed on Sunday, when Melton officially becomes trade-eligible.
Fischer hears that the two teams also discussed Nets forward Cameron Johnson, but he won’t be included in this trade (Twitter link). However, Warriors two-way player Reece Beekman is expected to be added to Golden State’s outgoing package, Fischer notes (via Twitter).
Both Melton and Schröder are on expiring contracts and will hit free agency in 2025. Melton has a cap hit of $12,822,000 this season, while Schröder is earning $13,025,250. The Warriors, who are currently operating just $533K-ish below their hard cap, will move closer to that threshold as they take on an extra $203K in salary in the swap with the Nets.
Melton, 26, signed a one-year deal deal worth the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception with the Warriors over the offseason to try to rebuild his value following an extended absence last season due to a back ailment. Unfortunately, the defensive stalwart suffered a partially torn ACL just six games into his tenure with Golden State, requiring him to undergo season-ending surgery.
Schröder is off to an excellent start to the ’24/25 campaign and is a major reason why the Nets have been surprisingly competitive to this point. In 23 games, all starts (33.6 MPG), he’s averaging 18.4 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 6.6 APG and 1.1 SPG on .452/.387/.889 shooting.
Charania reported earlier this week that the Nets had been discussing trades involving Schröder, Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, with the Warriors expressing interest in all three players. Now a deal for Schröder is being finalized.
Multiple reports indicated Brooklyn was hoping to land a first-round pick for Schröder, but that was considered an overly optimistic ask for a role player on an expiring contract. The team will ultimately accept a net gain (pun not intended) of two second-rounders. Moving on from the point guard sooner rather than later will also limit the Nets’ upside on the court, potentially increasing the value of their own 2025 first-round pick.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link), the Nets continue to be active in trade discussions, particularly involving Johnson and Finney-Smith.
While Melton won’t return this season, his contract could come in handy in a subsequent trade for Brooklyn — he’ll become eligible to aggregated again on February 5 as long as the Nets and Warriors complete their deal on or before Monday. The Nets could hang onto him until then, then perhaps waive him after the Feb. 6 deadline if they don’t find a use for his expiring contract on the trade market.
Hang on Steve Kerr said Warriors aren’t making any trades lol. Apparently that’s final, I mean we never hear that before a trade.
You fell for that. Why would they announce it? There are a million rumors every season. Besides, Kerr is not the GM. If he wanted that job, he wouldn’t have left the Suns. Jeez. Kinda naive there buddy.
Haha please. New to sarcasm I see. Anyways….Melton wasn’t exactly helping this season going forward. Doesn’t fix a massive logjam of very similar players, unless more trades to come. Warriors desperately need a stronger 5 man rotation in the west. Jokic, Ant, Rudy and Naz, Lively and Gafford. Hell, even Nurkic is a big lump. What will Stevie do with his long lost son Podz after bringing Schroder on board? Ring the Bulls I actually like the Vuch on the Offensive end for Golden State.
Umm…I guess you hadn’t heard that Melton tore his ACL. They were fine when he playing. They beat Boston and Dallas. Denver has been struggling. Podz will do the same thing he has been doing all season.
Comprehension not the best either I see. ‘Melton isn’t exactly helping going forward’ key words….going forward, think about it lol. You warriors fans are a laugh.
Anyone suggesting Vucevic is an answer to anything shouldn’t be taken seriously
So that young kid or looney are better than vuch? Lmao, good luck with that playoff time, if in the playoffs.
Kerr said it yesterday. This is a great trade for the warriors. They don’t pick up more money. Might go as an under the radar pick up for Nets because Beekman been balling in the G league lately. Now Podz loses some minutes but they have a ball handler now.
Just my opinion
At this moment, Warriors and Rockets will not win anything in playoffs.
Stars Trades are absolutely needed
Stars don’t win championships teams do.
Steve Kerr said”no moves on the horizon” earlier today LMAO
Warriors getting Schroeder for a bag of chips. The proposal I made the other day doesn’t look so bad now. Really good move for the warriors.
Melton is a great player and I will die on that hill
You aren’t wrong, but Schroder is also better than Melton. GSW was a top 4 team with Melton. Both are quality rotation pieces you want. Hope GSW gets both for next year.
Me too !! he was putting it together offensively and his defense was already there of course. Hate losing him to injury. I think his acquisition was huge for the Warriors.
To be a great player you have to play. He’s as fragile as Embiid
Yes, that’s for sure.
Makes sense. Schroder can replace Melton in the lineup. Draymond can return to starting. It will probably be a 2nd at some future point. Payton and Schroder will be gone at the end of the season. They can bring back Melton, at a lower salary. They’ll have space to address some issues.
This is a great trade for golden state. Get a starting PG for 1 second pick and a pick swap essentially.
18.4 ppg, 6.6 assists
2023 World Cup Winner and MVP
2024 Olympics 4th place
He’s a stud !
2 second round picks and a pick swap. Good trade nonetheless.
Basically a gift for Warriors! Schroder is an awesome player amd depending on how Warriors play next 6 weeks, maybe more to come…
Just what they need for offense. He opens up the floor and has good ball handling to cut down on TO
Yes, and he has the confidence to score at the end of the game if needed.
I sure him and Draymond will get along. Yeah, right.
Everyone gets along when you win. Now they just have to win.
Now they can slide Curry to the two which is his natural position. This allows the warriors to have a real back court with a point guard that has the awareness to run a team!!
So he has been playing out of position for nearly his entire career?
It’s positionless basketball today. You throw out your five best players according to the needs of the game. Couple of ball handlers couple of shooters couple of defenders and rebounders. That’s it.
It’s not like the old days were one guy as the point guard the other guy is the shooter. The three man is the slasher. The five man is the rebounder with help from the four etc. You need guys to do multiple things today.
The two better be a ball handler unless you have a three to do it or the Warriors have the four do it with Green.
Curry is a Point Guard. Shooting Guards don’t normally have the handles, court vision or passing chops Curry has. Just because he can shoot doesn’t make him a Shooting Guard.
Apparently you guys have never heard of a thing called a “combo guard”. Its when someone like Curry runs point, and can run it on any play, but he can instantly switch mid-play or on a preset play to play off the ball, and play a SG-style role, which combined with Klay, made the Warriors unbeatable – Steph did this for years with Draymond and Iguodala.
Since Iggy been gone, the Warriors have not had a good player in that role, its usually 2way level talent, as Kerr prefers to use for some idiotic reason. The combo guard is kinda rare in this league, although Melton certainly qualifies, as does Dennis. Maxey is another guy who can do this. Many try and dont do both well, Curry obviously is transcendent at both.
Steph is the GOAT, he plays everything. Heck the man be setting screens more than some centers out there lmao
You will try to box him but you cant box the GOAT!!!
Hawks just struggled big time in the 1st half, non-Trae Young mins vs Mil in Vegas. This illustrates a main reason I wish we would have traded for Dennis.
The Hawks have taken a step forward this year. I agree they need a better back up for Trae but you must be pleased with what they are showing.
My opinion is an upgrade on Capela and a back up PG and they could really make some noise in the East.
Why? Very weird move by GS…
The other guys mentioned would be amazing for them, but Schroder is just a sunk cost for them…I’d wayyy rather have the injured Melton +the picks
Not many matchups where he makes sense to play over anyone, but basically every teams rotation is a clown show this year anyway, so I guess whatever
Maybe they have other trades in the works and Dennis will be filling in the gaps after those trades?
He’s got the ball handling skills to take some pressure off Curry. Other than Green they didn’t have a reliable playmaker other than Curry.
Why? Umm did you not see how the team played with Melton vs without?
Its pretty simple: Curry needs a combo player that isnt Draymond who is a good scorer himself. Melton was that dude, but Schroder also can be that guy here. Its a season-saving trade tbh.
I don’t think it’s that bizarre. Essentially replaces Melton’s role as a guard who can take some handling pressures off of steph, run an offense, play some decent POA defense and hopefully generate a little offense that they’ve been missing
I don’t know how Schroder keeps convincing people he’s so much better than he actually is, but this has been the best year of his career, so…part of that is all the versatile defenders he was playing with, and the fact him having the ball in his hands all the time wasn’t as redundant for them b/c they don’t really have much guard play. On GS, he only makes sense if multiple people are injured, in certain matchups
What do you mean? Schroder wanted $100M and did not get it, he didnt convince any team, until now, from his excellent, career-year play this year. He stepped it up on every aspect of his game, he locked in this year. GSW needs a playmaker who can score, like Melton, Schroder is better than Melton.
Nobody is saying Schroder is a all star just he fits what the warriors need a ball handler who can play defense and create some offense. He is also a high IQ passer and with all the TO they commit it will help.
@Acr89 Schroder is better than Melton. Not many people seeing this. Melton was a perfect fit because Melton, Green and Curry could all switch to the point role, Schroder is a perfect match to reconnect those early season units.
My biggest fear is Kerr threw out all those Melton rotations and playsets and is going to try and shove Schroder into these awful recent rotations that should never exist if Kerr wasnt a bored dumbass who openly admits he loves losing more than winning. If Kerr brings back all those Melton units but with Schroder replacing Melton, GSW is going to be top 4.
Melton was better defensively. Kerr needs to cut down on Podz minutes because they have a better ball handler. take the ball out of Green’s hands his passes this year have been very bad.
Schroder can’t play nearly the defense Melton can, isn’t as good of a shooter, needs the ball in his hands…
This point doesn’t even matter b/c they have Payton still, and they have Lindy Waters…Schroder and Hield on the same unit is going to be awful without specific people around them…
Schroder only makes sense if multiple people get injured, and against specific matchups
@daveyj
While I agree with you on Podz.
How many titles have you won as a coach? In real life, above grade school level, and not EA? I’m guessing Kerr has four more than you do. Your constant anti Kerr rhetoric is getting real old and classless. Give it a rest! Let alone you somehow type after repeatedly dislocating your shoulder from patting yourself on the back.
They would have to give up more to get those guys + they could still be negotiating other Nets players, they dont have to be attached to this deal
Lol what?
Thought they could get a late #1.
OK who’s next Cam J, Cam T, Claxton, Bogdanovic.
It’s tank all the way to draft……. top3 pick or bust
Claxton is signed long term. They’ll look to sign Cam T in the off-season. Some team may give him a big offer sheet to force the Nets to pay big, but the Nets will have plenty of cap space. The others could be moved, but I’m not rooting for it. I consider myself a Javelin anti-tank missile and always root for my team to win. I do think the Nets have a good future ahead with Fernandez, though.
Future is secured with a top pick. This is a deep draft. Nets have plenty picks. Could trade up for two top picks.
YYEEAHHHSSS!! And this should only be just the BEGINNING of Dubs’ wheeling-and-dealing! The Warriors have so many damn assets – players other teams would seriously want! – to throw on the table that I’ll be SHELL-SHOCKED if they don’t follow this with an even bigger trade by the deadline; not many other contenders interested in upgrading can confidently boast such a thing. Trust me on this: these are the players whose job is safe in the bay…….
1. Wardell Stephen Curry
2. Draymond Green
3. (more than likely) Dennis Schröder
And that’s it. That’s IT!!!
Let’s go for it, Dunleavyyyy!! YES!!!
Moses Moody’s contact is poison pilled, he wont be traded until after the season or not at all, as GSW needs players for next year. But if they trade Moody now, they can only bring in a player making less than $4M. If they wait 6 months, that changes to $39M. Lacob is never trading Moody this year unless its for a superstar rookie making that little.
Ok: Steph, Dray, Moses, and more than likely Dennis
You’re far too excited about the Warriors.
The Play In Warriors
5th seed is not play in
Lets see by the end of the regular season
Not sure why you hate them so much. The team has been playing some good defense.
Cant believe Orlando didn’t try to get him, they need guard and scoring help badly.
I think the nets are trying to re-start their entire thing so getting Melton on an expiring deal plus the draft picks was ideal for them. I don’t know how many teams can send over an injured guy who won’t take a roster spot. That way Brooklyn can play young guys develop them plus be ready for the draft and next season somehow. DeAndre Melton was the perfect piece to pick up in this situation, I think.
I love this trade; welcome to the Warrior’s Mr Schröder! It always felt like, whenever we played against him, he’s light us up – great to have him on the squad.
Maybe the warriors are planning to move Curry?
Yes I think you’re right. They’re shopping him hard and they’ve got Shams and the other reporters on it according to the headlines I read today.
I don’t see why C Johnson was discussed. Unless it’s for Kuminga and picks. Makes no sense.
I get Warriors bitnnn up about Curry’s last yrs. Just don’t see quick fixes. With the West top heavy.
Curry’s is 36 now.
Al, I agree, there is no value in Cam Johnson, unless you want to send out Kuminga, which the Warriors have already shown they won’t do by keeping out of the Paul George and Markkanen discussions.
If they trade Kuminga, they’ll need a true big in return. You can’t pair Johnson, who doesn’t rebound well, with Wiggins.
Cant you see that Cam Johnson is 28 and way better than Kuminga right now? Upgrading a 22 year old still finding his way (slowly) vs a 28 year old having a career year in his prime is a perfect 1-1 swap imo. Cam Johnson’s time is now, GSW is win-now, it’s the superior option to Jimmy, Bron etc.
I would try and get Cam Johnson and Nic Claxton for Kuminga and Podziemski (age 21) in a multi-teamer. JK and Podz don’t fit GSW’s timeline, Johnson and Claxton do. Johnson and Claxton also dont fit BK’s timeline, JK and Podz do.
Cam Johnson would pair very well with Wiggins or Kuminga in between Draymond…he fits exactly what they’ve needed since they lost Porter/won’t give chances to certain people they’ve had/still have since then at the 4/3…
The warriors are nothing but a team that are all side liners Schroeder will bring a winning attitude that could allow them to make the playoffs. Also how many assists does Curry average.
6.5.
Why is Curry only averaging 30.7 MPG, down from 32.7 last year and 34.7 the year before?
Because he is old if you dont realize that. Also this is not Nba 2k where you can just have him play all 48 minutes.
$50 million highest paid player in the league and if you watched the games (you dont, you are purely only ever quoting cherry picked stats to try and argue with me, annoying/no one cares) Kerr is benching him and forgetting he exists.
What he said is true and you havent said anything substantial yet.
COMING UP NEXT:
The deal enables GSW to add another player to the roster. Until now, we’ve been unable to fill our last roster slot without exceeding our cap.
Melton’s outgoing $12.8M exceeds Shcroeder’s incoming $10M by $2.8M. We can now fill that roster spot without trading current players. Or we can more easily participate in multi-team transactions.
We’ve reportedly had our eye on a couple of current NBA players in their 2nd to 4th seasons (making them affordable in the short-term), where their teams are looking for future draft picks in exchange or other young talent in exchange. See, for example, Walker Kessler.
CORRECTION: Schroeder cap hit for GSW is $13M, not $10M as originally reported (now corrected) on the wire.
That means still doesn’t have enough cap space to fill their last roster spot.
Schroder > Melton. GSW was a top 4 team with Melton. Do the math
This is an excellent deal for the Warriors. And since both Schroder and Melton can both be traded again, both teams are able to use them in future deals. Very nice upgrade for the Warriors at a very low cost. More deals coming? we’ll see……
I don’t like this move. Get a C but having many players behind your best player I guess. Many PG’s out there on the free agent market still but it’s a repeat of last year with Paul. Kerr never learns. He is lucky this team fell into his lap
Could have traded for a cheaper C and then sign a PG but no.
I am not a fan (just appreciate their greatness)people so understand that before making clueless assumptions
I hate this trade for Dennis and GS. Lakers should have offered Gabe Vincent and three 2nds for Dennis S
Dennis should be starting somewhere. He is the best player in the world right
Now Payton, two way Spencer and that 2nd for either S Adams, Kelly Olynyk or Janos Val.
Or trade Payton and that 2nd with another 2nd to Detroit for cash and a 2nd
Sign Bismack Biyombo or Moses Brown or promote Post. Sign a young C, PG (21 or 22) prospects two way contracts
Makes perfect sense to me.
Brooklyn had too many 2nd rounders next off-season, so they are getting 3 more valuable ones.
And it made sense not to wait for other offers as they can still use Meltons salary just before the trade deadline.
Plus the tanking advantage obviously.
Deal seems fair. Brooklyn wanted a first for Dennis, which I didn’t see them getting, so netting two seconds feels about right.
Good move for the dubs. Will they also get Butler or Kuz is the question?
Cam Johnson > Kuminga
Voo-seh-vich! Voo-seh-vich! Voo-seh-vich! He’s next on the list for Dub Nation (sooo much appreciation)! Does Kuminga, GP2, and perhaps Anderson get it done for “The Other BIGTIME Nikola” and a 2nd rounder? Oh-ho YYYEEEHHH-HEEHSSS it’s still a good time to be a Dubs fan – the dynasty may be over but eyes on trophy # FIIIIIIVE of the Curry era remains a realistic goal!
Kuminga isnt being traded for a C, LMAO
Kuminga is only being traded for a young superstar who better fits the timeline.
Vucevic isnt worth Kuminga, the Bulls only want 1 1st round pick for him, where did you get to this absurd package for him???
Let the idea marinate a little, Davey J! The price is right for Vucevic. A core group of Steph-Dray-Nikola-Dennis-a focused Andrew has me salivating.
No to Vucevic. Same to Ball.
Kuminga is a potential rental who may require a max deal to retain. His trade value around the league is going to disappoint a lot of fans IMO.
My final thoughts on this – I called for this move and am loving this, obviously there might be more deals but if its the only one, it might be the only one needed. GSW was a contender with Melton, Schroder is way better than Melton at scoring and is slightly worse on defense, but GSW dont need more defense, they have lost all these recent winnable games because Podziemski is averaging 7.9 PPG 24.9 MPG when he needs to be at least 15 PPG with that playing time in that Klay role, which results in 3-5+ long minute scoreless droughts as Podz heaves brick after brick. That will never happen with Dennis the menace who can run plays and shoot WAY better than Podz.
I forsee GSW get back on track starting on Thursday, they can still finish top 4 and if no further injuries might be able to get there just with this one move alone.
That said, Podz will hopefully be traded, at 21, he doesn’t fit this timeline and is clearly going to be a project player a rebuilding team can run out there every night and hope he eventually learns and adjusts his game so he can be the guy all these people who thought he was going to be. If not traded, I seriously hope GSW sends him to the G league to help develop his offensive profile, like they did with Poole. He cannot keep getting NBA playing time. Dub Nation deserves better than Pat Spencer too. He shouldn’t be in this league, he has the Euro league skillset and IQ, all he does out there is run training drills.
I don’t know where to put this, but this Mavs v Warriors game is an abomination.
Seriously considering stop following this league.
What are you not liking about it? The refs the flopping the complaining? Bad defense? I’m not disagreeing just curious.
That’s quite a halftime score, though. A few years ago that was the final score in some eastern conference games.
Yup, load management and all the injuries aside, there are more than a few things that annoys fans these past few years:
I won’t mind it so much, the sheer volume of 3-point shots – but when there’s a clear lane, when there’s a 2 against 1 situation, etc only to kick out for a 3pt attempt ……. SMH.
I wont mind a flop or two in games. I’ve always said that flopping is part of the game – it’s instinct in some game scenarios e.g. taking a charge …… but when a 280 pound league MVP flops all the time, both on offense and defense, the game becomes a circus somewhat.
Yes, too much complaining, not just from Luka …….. mainly Luka.
Keep complaining dubs
