The Warriors are finalizing an agreement with the Nets to acquire veteran point guard Dennis Schröder, reports Shams Charania of ESPN.
Sources tell Charania that Brooklyn will send Schröder and one second-round pick to Golden State in exchange for injured guard De’Anthony Melton and three second-rounders.
Marc Stein and Jake Fischer (Twitter links), who first reported that Brooklyn’s return would include Melton’s expiring contract and second-round compensation, suggest the deal is on track to be completed on Sunday, when Melton officially becomes trade-eligible.
Fischer hears that the two teams also discussed Nets forward Cameron Johnson, but he won’t be included in this trade (Twitter link). However, Warriors two-way player Reece Beekman may be added to Golden State’s outgoing package, Fischer notes (via Twitter).
Both Melton and Schröder are on expiring contracts and will hit free agency in 2025. Melton has a cap hit of $12,822,000 this season, while Schröder is earning $13,025,250. The Warriors, who are currently operating just $533K-ish below their hard cap, will move closer to that threshold as they take on an extra $203K in salary in the swap with the Nets.
Melton, 26, signed a one-year deal deal worth the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception with the Warriors over the offseason to try to rebuild his value following an extended absence last season due to a back ailment. Unfortunately, the defensive stalwart suffered a partially torn ACL just six games into his tenure with Golden State, requiring him to undergo season-ending surgery.
Schröder is off to an excellent start to the ’24/25 campaign and is a major reason why the Nets have been surprisingly competitive to this point. In 23 games, all starts (33.6 MPG), he’s averaging 18.4 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 6.6 APG and 1.1 SPG on .452/.387/.889 shooting.
Charania reported earlier this week that the Nets had been discussing trades involving Schröder, Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, with the Warriors expressing interest in all three players. Now a deal for Schröder is being finalized.
Multiple reports indicated Brooklyn was hoping to land a first-round pick for Schröder, but that was considered an overly optimistic ask for a role player on an expiring contract. The team will ultimately accept a net gain (pun not intended) of two second-rounders. Moving on from the point guard sooner rather than later will also limit the Nets’ upside on the court, potentially increasing the value of their own 2025 first-round pick.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link), the Nets continue to be active in trade discussions, particularly involving Johnson and Finney-Smith.
While Melton won’t return this season, his contract could come in handy in a subsequent trade for Brooklyn — he’ll become eligible to aggregated again on February 5 as long as the Nets and Warriors complete their deal on or before Monday. The Nets could hang onto him until then, then perhaps waive him after the Feb. 6 deadline if they don’t find a use for his expiring contract on the trade market.
Hang on Steve Kerr said Warriors aren’t making any trades lol. Apparently that’s final, I mean we never hear that before a trade.
You fell for that. Why would they announce it? There are a million rumors every season. Besides, Kerr is not the GM. If he wanted that job, he wouldn’t have left the Suns. Jeez. Kinda naive there buddy.
Haha please. New to sarcasm I see. Anyways….Melton wasn’t exactly helping this season going forward. Doesn’t fix a massive logjam of very similar players, unless more trades to come. Warriors desperately need a stronger 5 man rotation in the west. Jokic, Ant, Rudy and Naz, Lively and Gafford. Hell, even Nurkic is a big lump. What will Stevie do with his long lost son Podz after bringing Schroder on board? Ring the Bulls I actually like the Vuch on the Offensive end for Golden State.
Umm…I guess you hadn’t heard that Melton tore his ACL. They were fine when he playing. They beat Boston and Dallas. Denver has been struggling. Podz will do the same thing he has been doing all season.
Kerr said it yesterday. This is a great trade for the warriors. They don’t pick up more money. Might go as an under the radar pick up for Nets because Beekman been balling in the G league lately. Now Podz loses some minutes but they have a ball handler now.
Steve Kerr said”no moves on the horizon” earlier today LMAO
Warriors getting Schroeder for a bag of chips. The proposal I made the other day doesn’t look so bad now. Really good move for the warriors.
Makes sense. Schroder can replace Melton in the lineup. Draymond can return to starting. It will probably be a 2nd at some future point. Payton and Schroder will be gone at the end of the season. They can bring back Melton, at a lower salary. They’ll have space to address some issues.
This is a great trade for golden state. Get a starting PG for 1 second pick and a pick swap essentially.
18.4 ppg, 6.6 assists
2023 World Cup Winner and MVP
2024 Olympics 4th place
He’s a stud !
2 second round picks and a pick swap. Good trade nonetheless.
Basically a gift for Warriors! Schroder is an awesome player amd depending on how Warriors play next 6 weeks, maybe more to come…
Just what they need for offense. He opens up the floor and has good ball handling to cut down on TO
Yes, and he has the confidence to score at the end of the game if needed.
I sure him and Draymond will get along. Yeah, right.
Everyone gets along when you win. Now they just have to win.
Now they can slide Curry to the two which is his natural position. This allows the warriors to have a real back court with a point guard that has the awareness to run a team!!
So he has been playing out of position for nearly his entire career?
Curry is a Point Guard. Shooting Guards don’t normally have the handles, court vision or passing chops Curry has. Just because he can shoot doesn’t make him a Shooting Guard.
Apparently you guys have never heard of a thing called a “combo guard”. Its when someone like Curry runs point, and can run it on any play, but he can instantly switch mid-play or on a preset play to play off the ball, and play a SG-style role, which combined with Klay, made the Warriors unbeatable – Steph did this for years with Draymond and Iguodala.
Since Iggy been gone, the Warriors have not had a good player in that role, its usually 2way level talent, as Kerr prefers to use for some idiotic reason. The combo guard is kinda rare in this league, although Melton certainly qualifies, as does Dennis. Maxey is another guy who can do this. Many try and dont do both well, Curry obviously is transcendent at both.
Hawks just struggled big time in the 1st half, non-Trae Young mins vs Mil in Vegas. This illustrates a main reason I wish we would have traded for Dennis.
Why? Very weird move by GS…
The other guys mentioned would be amazing for them, but Schroder is just a sunk cost for them…I’d wayyy rather have the injured Melton +the picks
Not many matchups where he makes sense to play over anyone, but basically every teams rotation is a clown show this year anyway, so I guess whatever
Maybe they have other trades in the works and Dennis will be filling in the gaps after those trades?
He’s got the ball handling skills to take some pressure off Curry. Other than Green they didn’t have a reliable playmaker other than Curry.
Why? Umm did you not see how the team played with Melton vs without?
Its pretty simple: Curry needs a combo player that isnt Draymond who is a good scorer himself. Melton was that dude, but Schroder also can be that guy here. Its a season-saving trade tbh.
I don’t think it’s that bizarre. Essentially replaces Melton’s role as a guard who can take some handling pressures off of steph, run an offense, play some decent POA defense and hopefully generate a little offense that they’ve been missing
Thought they could get a late #1.
OK who’s next Cam J, Cam T, Claxton, Bogdanovic.
It’s tank all the way to draft……. top3 pick or bust
Claxton is signed long term. They’ll look to sign Cam T in the off-season. Some team may give him a big offer sheet to force the Nets to pay big, but the Nets will have plenty of cap space. The others could be moved, but I’m not rooting for it. I consider myself a Javelin anti-tank missile and always root for my team to win. I do think the Nets have a good future ahead with Fernandez, though.
YYEEAHHHSSS!! And this should only be just the BEGINNING of Dubs’ wheeling-and-dealing! The Warriors have so many damn assets – players other teams would seriously want! – to throw on the table that I’ll be SHELL-SHOCKED if they don’t follow this with an even bigger trade by the deadline; not many other contenders interested in upgrading can confidently boast such a thing. Trust me on this: these are the players whose job is safe in the bay…….
1. Wardell Stephen Curry
2. Draymond Green
3. (more than likely) Dennis Schröder
And that’s it. That’s IT!!!
Let’s go for it, Dunleavyyyy!! YES!!!
Moses Moody’s contact is poison pilled, he wont be traded until after the season or not at all, as GSW needs players for next year. But if they trade Moody now, they can only bring in a player making less than $4M. If they wait 6 months, that changes to $39M. Lacob is never trading Moody this year unless its for a superstar rookie making that little.
Cant believe Orlando didn’t try to get him, they need guard and scoring help badly.
